    Love love the grocery hauls , so fastened by what you get and how you use it . Great lesson in how to break down cost . Food has really gone up here and no end in sight really . So watching you and then cooking and preserving food has taught me life lessons . You’re a true gem.

    I squeeze toothpaste (a few tubes) into a clean hand soap dispenser, put in a little mouthwash to make it a bit thinner. Shake it around to mix. This method is so easy and so much tidier and more economical. Wish I had done it when kids were little but now my hubby and I have done this for years. Highly recommend to anyone with kids, bathroom stays clean and cheaper.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  8 месяцев назад +2

      That's a great idea, these little tubes work quite well to extend the toothpaste, its more of a gel than a paste, so it doesn't discolour everything, and its 'funky' flavours lol, so they're liking it, so far so good!

    Great video Nyssa. It’s such a pity that schools do not teach this sort of financial and food planning as not all parents take the time or are able to do so themselves. I love to see my 8 grandchildren (age 3 to 13) baking and cooking. Looking forward to the meal videos Nyssa

    I've watched a lot of your food prep videos, but never one of your grocery haul video's before, what an eye opener! You do very well to only spend $350 (ish) dollars a week on food for your large family, I spend that (and sometimes more) for our family of 4! Now that's got me thinking!!! The weevils you got in your bulk popcorn would most definitely have been in the there when you bought it, I know freezer space is at a premium at the beginning of your shopping cycle, but the minute you've got some space in the freezer be sure to put your popcorn in the freezer for a few days, that'll sort 'em out ;) Great content Nyssa, thanks for sharing.

    Hey Nyssa, you’ve probably already thought of it but in case you haven’t a lot of shops won’t open at all or if they do it won’t be til 1pm on ANZAC Day and Costco will also be closed (though I think you do that on the Friday so that won’t matter so much, might just be a little busier if a lot of people turn it in to a 4 day weekend)

    Hi, I've just been recommended this video. I like watching grocery hauls mostly from America because you get to see all the different products they have. Im a kiwi, please don't hold it against me😊. We have one costco here and while I live in Auckland I'm at the other end. I am planning a trip with my friend to see what they have and what the prices are like there. Thanks for your detailed shopping haul, it's good to get a comparison. Your fruit and vege are a lot cheaper than here. It fact most you mentioned were on average half the price.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  8 месяцев назад

      Hubby is Kiwi :) we’re trying to plan a trip in a few years time so he can show me where he grew up etc :D
      I score my f&v very cheap because of the way I buy it, it’s probably not a great comparison for standard pricing, but I definitely try and buy the cheapest quality options where I possibly can :D

    Placing dry foods in the freezer for a couple of days will prolong their life (that's if you have the space). Though you probably have a fast turnover for most foods. I do this with flours, pasta and grains. The value of the fruit & vegetables is amazing. Actually your whole shop this time is amazing.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  8 месяцев назад

      We never seem to have freezer room unfortunately, I do put bay leaves in containers and try very hard to get the rotation going, I think the flour loss was that the kids had opened multiple barrels. There was 3 barrels with only 1/3 full of flour each!

    That was a huge haul. Prices here in US have gone up so much too. Have you noticed the packages getting smaller or amount less in packages there. So many things here cost more and there is less in the package. I have seen several videos lately with people using lentils to add to soups, stews and other meat dishes to stretch the protein.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  8 месяцев назад +1

      Definitely and even the case sizing is smaller, like the rice crackers I buy (didn’t this month because the kids had plenty left) used to be a case of 16 and is now a case of 12!
      I love using lentils or pearl barley to stretch some things, the kids don’t like the texture in some but are ok with it in other!

      We buy dried food from the feed store for both the cats and the dogs, and then they get excess as well, the cats love bits of raw chicken/mince etc, we use the carcasses pureed and stuff for the dogs, but also they get some of the excess stuff we don't use, like those chicken wings from the hamper that they got over a couple of weeks etc. I like that the dry food is well balanced, I know they're getting what they need and then I can top it up with some extra nutrition/treats :D

    Well done 👏 great haul and costings! Curious if you have a PFD foods distribution store near you? They sell to ABN holders and also customers, another option if you have them up your way. They generally sell to catering companies and are bulk foodstuffs.
    I suggest as the 1kg tub of pesto is delicious and would be cheaper than the jars you purchased. Just a thought 💭

      We bought from them actually during Covid when we couldn’t get a lot of things. Costco sells a 1kg tub of pesto too! But it needs to be kept in the fridge, whereas the jars are shelf stable which is handy hhe

    U could use the thick ham for ham steaks with pineapple slices on top with salad which is nice on a hot summers day or fried rice on the side...
    Were do U buy the ramon noodles from Coles I think U said...
    Freeze the bananas and zuk's and pickle the cucumbers will last longer...
    You could marinda chicken legs with garlic butter under the skin...then freeze them...
    You should look up a NZ Lady Vlog she has grey hair does kitchen cooking cheaply for big families...😂❤😂❤😂

      Yes, the noodles are from Coles :)
      We always freeze a bunch of bananas, the kids love them frozen and great for smoothies. I've grated up a lot of the zucchini so far, about 5kg in the freezer like that so far hehe :D. The kids hoover the cucumbers, I rarely need to do anything to them hehe :D

      @@OurSmallFootprint I think you did amazing 🤩.
      Like I said super impressed in how well you budget.
      I have gotten slack when I shop. Having said that I also had Both the man child and the son with me and they are shocking to take shopping.
      my last shop was horrible when I got to the checkout it was $417 for four of us for a fortnight.
      I did have to buy all toiletries, washing powder, dishwasher liquid and tablets and all those type of extras.
      Normally they are spread out but occasionally they all run out together.
      I also needed olive oil and those big type things.
      I will be going back to making my own washing and dishwasher powder again.
      However I have had to slowly buy extra bits and bobs as I go to make it worth while as buying it in bulk is the cheapest way.
      But wow I’m so impressed with your budget and the amount of people and how long it is for

    yeah it definitely looked like you got more but your right it was about the same cost wise. so i don't know what you did differently unless that free zucchini really is that big of a difference. also i for one would be super happy if your cats and dogs showed up in a few more videos probably not in the cooking ones but in the more chatty ones it would be great to see the cats and dogs.

    Just a thought when you do know you’re going grocery shopping. Couldn’t you ring up the supermarkets even Aldi a few days before and get them to keep you two dozen coconut milk or something like that or even a week before because I know they do it are used to work for Woolworths and a lot of people used to ring up and if they wanted a big bulk of stuff . it was just a thought that you said running short or going around different as they get a order in every night so if you tell them they may be able to order it in for you specially keep aside

    • @OurSmallFootprint

      Aldi will not do it, I’ve asked before. I haven’t tried asking at Woolworths/coles though. I’ll have to give it a go, there’s not many things that I struggle to get enough of regularly, but it would be handy! :). Thank you :)

    If the kiddies aren't great at sealing the ham, would a cotton bag soaked in vinegar work? Thinking how we store ham over Xmas in a ham bag.

    Forgive me if you've already answered this somewhere but how do you keep all the fruit n veg cold and fresh? Cucumbers go bad in my fridge in less than a week for example.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  8 месяцев назад

      Things like cucumbers we mostly eat within the week, the kids love them as snacks, we make sure to have rice paper rolls and sushi in that first week too, sometimes we pickle some for burgers later in the month too! But the kids can easily eat the 10kg in a week lol.
      Carrots are in a crate in the bottom of the fridge, they tend to last most of the 6 weeks, the broccoli we’ll gorge on and then I’ll probably blanch and freeze the rest. Apples last pretty well in the fridge as well, as do oranges. But realistically we just freeze what isn’t going to last and eat it from frozen :). Or can it, I have jars of cinnamon apples, pear slices, jams etc on the shelf :)
      The chest fridge definitely seems to prolong the life of a lot of things too

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  8 месяцев назад +1

      Urgh, I spose it depends on where their meat is processed, do they have a butcher on site? I thought it was worth an ask at my Costco and I was so glad I did. Mind you last months 25kg box meant I didn’t buy any this month heh

    • @BACONfreak.jw.73
      @BACONfreak.jw.73 8 месяцев назад

      @OurSmallFootprint im in usa and thwy do have a butcher but i guess you cant buy scraps. I asked our local butcher shop about beef bones to make broth. They were $4/lb and basically devoid of any meat/fat

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  8 месяцев назад

      @@BACONfreak.jw.73 I think it depends how they get stuff in too, like the boxes that I buy are prepacked at the abbatoir/meat processing plant and they then mince them to sell as mince, so I’m just buying the boxes they got in directly rather than after they minced it!

    I really love your videos. I wonder if there is a way for your homestead to make some extra $? Maybe selling livestock or goats for goat milk etc, maybe Rabbits? Also I was wondering if u have tried Rabbit meat as a cheap meat. I've had it several times and it's delicious. They are the cheapest meat per pound to grow. I live in the USA, so it's not normal to see it on our shelves either, but I wish that would change. Our Grandparents used it during WW2 & the depression. My Grandma, who lived through both of those things died last Month at 96. My Grandpa died many years before, but I grew up living only a few blocks away. They taught me so much

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  8 месяцев назад

      It’s illegal to have rabbits in Queensland unfortunately! It is also illegal to sell any meat products you have butchered yourself without specific licencing, we aren’t even allowed to sell eggs for consumption without a whole lot of licencing!
      The plan has always been to expand our chicken flock to sell fertile eggs and maybe some pullets etc, but it’s been a slow process getting the size of the flock adequate to sustain that.

    • @OurSmallFootprint

      I think I forgot to mention that in this video! I normally mention it as an add on, I fill the tank near home, and then I fill again at Costco before coming home again, so I normally say it costs about 70-100 in petrol for the trip as well (depending on whether I have the trailer or not and what the cost of fuel is)
