Joshua Pomales Nah, just because his voice is different doesn’t mean it still isn’t one of the best. Sure, his voice doesn’t have the gruff it used to, but if you see any concert of theirs now, he is magnificent on the softer and more harmonious parts of songs. Like One, Fade To Black, and the Day That Never Comes. His live singing never really fit the moods of those songs until the early 2000’s.
@@sydneyporterfield9024 He mostly used his throat, and eventually fucked up his voice. Alcohol abuse helped too. He never had specific technique and that's why he can't sing like this today.
James's vocal range truly is incredible. He can effortlessy go from growling and aggressive directly to soothing and beautiful in an instant. It's just another reason why he is the greatest frontman of all time.

In the chorus @1:47, James Hetfield sings "Never B(e), never C(ee)" (sic), where "B" is on a C note, and "C" is on a B note. That's crafty songwriting for sure, on the same level as Liszt writing a fugue over B-A-C-H. For the musical theorists, the melody continues with the last note of each following phrase being G# (Won't *see*) and lastly A (Might have *Been*)
I’m not a singer, but I have noticed that James’ distortion sounds a bit like Mongolian throat singing, especially in parts like 1:08. Any singers out there who can tell me if he uses a similar technique as Mongolian throat singing?
It can be easily heard throughout the entire song that Hetfield wore down his vocal cords badly, especially towards the end of second verse when he sings "the tired man they see no longer cares". If you pay attention, you'll notice that the following line "the old man then prepares' had to be added from another take after he recovered his voice enough to finish recording the entire second verse.
Actually "the old man then prepares" is doubled and recorded through a different mic/signal chain. The double is obvious and its more "in your face" with less reverb.
