  • Welcome to "Inside The Juno Reactor" Podcast
Episode 9: Mabi - King of Conga Fury (Miles Davis, Juno Reactor)
    SYNOPSIS:
This week's "Inside the Juno Reactor" is dedicated to Mabi, his life and unique persona, his amazing percussion, musical skills, and cheerful character.
In this special interview shot by Ben Watkins 10 years ago at JR's Ridge Farm Studio, we hear the Mabi story: a look at his background and early life in South Africa, to then explore what then became an essential element, Mabi changed the trajectory of Juno Reactor, a collaborator for 15 years.
    GUEST BIO:
One of South Africa's most venerable musicians, a veteran of bands such as Malombo and Sakhile, Mabi Gabriel Thobejane is a natural born drummer. Known in the West as the 'Conga King' he has worked with Robert "Doc" Mthalane, Pops Mohamed, Miles Davis Sipho Gumede, Madala Kunene and Busi Mhlongo. Interested in bringing traditional music to a wider audience he has more recently collaborated with premier trance outfit Juno Reactor.
Born 1948 in Mamelodi, South Africa, and passed on June 3, 2021.

I only got to watch 40min of him talking and was completely blown away by his personality, I cant imagine how it was to spend days/weeks with this man. Thank you for digging this out of the vault!

WOW, that improvised Zwara performance!!! Y'all were animated by the great spirit, no wonder it came out so beautifully ❤
Wish him the best for his passing into the other world. I bet he must be navigating in some magical land out there.

    Oh, Mabi ♥
That man once grabbed me by the head, pulled me in and whispered some great knowledge intro my ear.
Sadly, my audio processing is a bit shit, so I didn't get a word of it.
But I am 100% sure it was genius, and my life is worse for not understanding.
    Such a nice guy.

I'm so glad I got to see him with you, so very special, I wish I was more outgoing at the time, would have loved to say hello. It was such an odd show but I loved it, it was such a small and intimate setting, I remember not only being carried away by not just the sound but the pulsing beat that goes through you that only comes from being live, all of the senses, even the smell as they roamed the audience. It has been so long now but it left an impression on me. I didn't know it at the time but I'm sure a lot of that came from Mabi.

@@JunoReactorOfficial Fun fact, the concert was the best value by far! I still have the tickets and my email receipt, I only paid $30 after service fees for my wife and I. No wonder you didn't make money lol! I have never taken soooo much from an artist and paid so little! Ah yes and Sugizo! I looked him up afterwards, was so impressed!

In 90's i went on a whole day long car trip with my friend. He asked me to bring some CD's. He was surprised that i brought only one. Juno Reactor, Transmissions.
He never heard about it. And i just found it after months of digging for Juno Reactor in CD shops. I heard before only one song in some club and i instantly fell in love with it. So i was really excited to be able to finally hear the whole album!
Man, that album was on the loop on a way there and back and both of us didn't even think to put on something else. Amazing album! While i listened i tried to imagine the man behind such a masterpiece. I had a feeling that i would be scared if i would ever meet this great artist.
But now after i saw this interview with this beautiful soul i am sure that i would be less scared than i thought before.:)
Ben thank you for your art & Mabi be blessed and happy with your loved ones wherever you are.

It happened again.... Every time I hear Badimo/Zwara I'm utterly transported! As if my ancestral DNA is activated. Carl Jung said that genetic/ancestral memory is a real thing, We're all descended from Africa, so maybe is not my imagination after all. :)

Hey Ben: Just discoverd this Inside Series. Thanks for doing this conversation for us. Love hearing about those who've worked with you. He sounds like he's Tibetan Throat singing most of the time when he speaks! When I discovered "Badimo" I actually thought he was a real African witch doctor doing an incantation. The song really sounds like an incantation to me. Keep this series going, the insight is amazing. I have a few suggestions for other Inside conversations if you'd like me to post them here. Be well.... Dean Zgoda

Hello Ben: Please post lyrics to Badimo here. They are nowhere to be found online. I'd really like to know what he's singing about. It sounds like an authentic incantation to Tswana Badimo spirits. Is it??? The anthropologist in me needs to know. Would be great if you also did a series about how some of JR lyrics came into being and what they are about. Zwara for example sounds like another incantation which has me spellbound when I hear them. Hope someday to see you live and be spellbound with you and JR. Cheers, DZ

We as a metal bad in the late 80s and early 90s - we wrote an album called BloedRivier, the intro when we finally toured Europe in 1995/96.... I wanted Ampapondo to to the rhythm section on the tour.... as we are / were also from Cape Town.... but the rest of the band did not want to have anything to do with it.... To me it remained a thorn in my soul... as in metal it was supposedly unacceptable at that time to put roots into songs, well I was a HC punk and VOD was my incarnation and that's what I wanted.... so many years later after the album BloedRivier release I made this home video to STILL try to qualm my mind... and so I will say I used footage from Amapondo YOU released to try and project what I had in mind at that time for Voice of Destruction South Africa.... I hope u forgive me for using their footage BUT I will say, you managed what I was hoping to mange with my band members - thank you for this and I appreciate your passion and involvement in the incredible life of Mabi.. respect and love >>>> So here is intro to The Battle of BloodRiver ruclips.net/video/GcPTI-wQ2y4/видео.html&pp=ygURYmxvZWRyaXZpZXIgdm9pY2U%3D

Guilty, what's the story there how your remix of that song came about?
Also, the kid in the Laibach God is God video: where is he now???
Shakti Records, the Ground Zero sampler: your time around those projects, that halcyon era....
i think Ben is (not a narcissist) but a very VERY talented dedicated interesting, experienced ONLY-quasi-commercial musician whose been one of, is one of the most subtley and discretely successful, (or should be considered successful...) Artists of this Generation, behind say Danny Elfman, Susan (acclaimed Musical Director) Jacobson, Beck, LIAM HOWLETT (That'd be a jolting, juicey conversation!!!) Richard D "needs work" James, Crispin Mills, Damon Alburn, Zheani!!!!!!!!!!!!... i wish in coming episodes, Ben will think of and reach out and invite People whom He ADMIRES, who've influenced and inspired Him, or who've maybe not worked within the seemingly small stratosphere of the Juno Reactor.
Bcuz we LOVE Ben, and it's a joy to hear him think out loud.

Mabi it was an amazing philosopher and vocalist and percussionist, and oh my God Ben,,, i want to sample him speaking and ESPECIALLY to use his voice in Tramp ©!!!!!!
Sorry to hear about the loss he suffered while on the road, oh my God what a way to be able to process his grief, and such an incredible story of a 15YO?!?! South African Bushman (in 1963?!?...) Flying in the airplanes to the Big Apple with a work visa to play drums hanging out with Miles Davis and who knows who?!?!???? Fuggin Guy probably met Malcolm X!!! !!! !!! !!!
