+Adam M A loaded question, but great one to ask. Pros of Ibanez: Love the shape of the bass, super lightweight. Really thin neck which is amazingly comfortable to play. Has 24 frets. I love the Bartolini MK1 pickups. Very versatile sound and was able to get a great tone off the bat. Price is really great for the sound you're getting as well. Cons of Ibanez: Bass neck warps easily (at least for mine) because of how thin it is. Had a lot of issues putting thicker gauge strings on it because I couldn't adjust the saddle of the bridge to fix intonation, the main reason I bought a new bass. Not that much of a selection in terms of pickup selection except the blend pot. Pros of MM: It looks amazing. Great and recognizable tone - especially from a well-known and respected bass manufacturer. Quality finish. Everything just feels more robust, from the tuning pegs, to the pots for EQ, to the frets. Cons of MM: Still not a huge fan of the neck, a bit bulky for my taste. Might be suitable if it were a 4-string. I feel like it's a bit more difficult to dial in a tone (particularly a metal one), but maybe I just need to spend more time with it. Price is high for most people. Hope that helps a little bit.
I use different effects and processing for each song so it's kind of hard to address your question having made it quite some time ago. For the most part the majority of my tone does come from Amplitube 4 in terms of software. I don't really have any pedalboard setup or anything like that.
I've though about doing one in the future. My fx chain consists of plugins from various developers such as Waves, IK Multimedia, Soundtoys, FabFilter, Avid, and sometimes SoundGrid, to name a few. It always changes so it's hard to describe what I do for each song.

Tightening strings more will always create tension on the neck. I think it was fairly negligible though.
