No rototiller in the world can do better than this machine. The old Gravely walk behind tractors were a force to be reckoned with in their time and to be honest when it comes to small tasks around the homestead and in the garden there is no substitute for these old machines. Today I worked a garden that had not been worked in three years. In one hour I was able to break the ground up with one pass and get the dirt close to being ready to plant. I will hit it one more time to after the sun has had a chance to kill the roots of the grass that we have turned over. I do not remove that material from the garden because it is good, organic material that will rot and add value to the soil. You can also see that I have a set up for this machine to also be used for grading and moving piles around. I love this machine, this thing is one amazing machine for the garden and the small time homesteader. It does have its limitations but on the other hand it is worth its weight in gold.

I worked at Gravely of Mobile for almost 3 years before it closed...great machines! Get the right attachments and you don't need anything else except a shade to rest in and some iced tea!
Benjamin Franklin Gravely of Dunbar, West Virginia, introduced his power-driven push plow in 1916. It used belts to transfer power from an Indian motorcycle engine. He called it a motor plow. He incorporated the Gravely company and, in the middle 1920s, marketed a 2½-horsepower Model D tractor from a manufacturing plant in Dunbar.
Once you become a Gravely owner it can be addictive. 😉 I'm definitely hooked.
Sure can. I have three of them.
My grandfather had a walk behind Gravely and as a teenager that thing wore me out. Your correct , the computer any started in Dunbar, WV. 👍👍👍
I just bought a 1973 Gravely 816S Riding Mower with the front end kit that contains the rotary plow, I was told it was a tree auger used for planting trees, and a post hole digger. It's just a longer version of the rotary plow. I used it for planting 28 various trees and bushes. That thing is a beast. It also came with the mower deck and I can't believe how nice of a job it does cutting the grass. It seems like a small brush hog. I really love it. Sad thing is yesterday after digging the last hole for me tree the shaft came off and it broke the one end where it connects to the PTO. I need to see if I can get it replaced.
My Grandfather owned two of them and he would talk about them so much my Grandmother would just ignore him , raving on and on. He passed on long ago. I seen an old farmer with one years later. I purchased it from him and currently own 7 of them. I love them as much as Grandpa. My poor wife now has to tune me out as I laugh because I sound like Grandpa.
Thatbis excellent, I do the same thing.
If I could only have one gas powered piece of equipment on a small place, it would be a Gravely. Two of my uncles had them as well as well as access to family tractors. I spent more hours working with a Gravely than I could count. They are wonderful machines. They are like a farmer’s Swiss Army Knife. This brought back a flood of good memories. Thank you!
You are welcome. It's crazy but they are still easy to find and get parts for. I have one that's over 60 years old and still works!
Lol , haven't seen one of them critters in quite some time. They were the Cadillac of lawn & garden equipment. Today, everybody thinks they need a 30 hp Kubota. Nice machine Jim.
I tell you I have proven I can work new ground with this faster than those little compacts. My uncle has a little Kubota with a tiller and this thing smoked it.
Doesn’t take much to do do stuff like this machine wish I could find one
never seen a machine like that before. thanks for sharing.
Gravely - 1916 built by
Ben Gravely
It was a Indian motorcycle engine in a Ford rear end differential ,
He combined the 2 together and over the years it developed into what you see here .
I bought my beast two years ago...no regrets, paid $2000 for it with three attachments. have yet to use my vertical tiller, but looking forward to it!!!!!
This video brings back Memories for me I plowed a full acer With a gravely about 3 years older than the one in the video. We got the tractor sitting in a barn in Bell, West Virginia it needed a starter. Used it for 5 years. Had rotary plow, tiler , 30" Brush hog mower, and Dual wheels for ours. This was greatest tractor I ever used I think my dad traded a fishing boat for it not running (the tractor) with all the attachments listed. That was 50 years ago When I was a teenager. Thanks again for the memory.
nice tractor, beast mode,
Hey Nathan. I bet you've seen these down your way a few times.
Those old rotary ploughs are grand pieces of kit!
They sure are, they look dangerous but they aren't too bad.
Evening Jim.... long weekend with my Son's College commencement, but we're back. I remember those Gravely's... tons of attachments and lots of power We came back yesterday to trees down, branches all over and our driveway totally destroyed from the weather....nice to live in the woods of the Adirondacks!
Oh boy. That storm was nasty. Congrats to your son.
@@TheTradesmanChannel Thanks, we're very proud of him!
Sorry to hear about your pup. Morning Jim. Those make great garden edgers as well, with the rotary-plow attachment. Set the border then till/turn the middle out.
You got it, I bet you've seen a few of these down your way.
One of the best ever designed, I used it in 1970's.
In all my years of landscaping this is a first for me seeing a beast of a machine like that. I had a Gravely commercial mower that would eat rocks. It and my Domar hedge trim I could punish and pound every day and neither ever let me down. That's a beautiful piece of American iron you have there. -Will
I love that tiller/swiss army tiller, great machine I have something like that made by vamer. I can't imagine living without it.
They are just plain great.
I always keep my eye out for one of those they have a ton of attachments and tons of power. They seems to just keep going and gong!!
They are great, I have three, the oldest one is 61 years old.
It's that darn old school cast iron 12hp Kohler !!
Sure is, it is an animal.
I LOVE those walk behind tractors! I used to have one with a bush hog attachment. I have two “ride on” type tractors I use now. I miss my ole walk behind-work horse!!
They are great machines in tight spaces or small jobs.
What a surprise to come across this video! I subscribed for the barn building and watch other channels for my Gravely addiction. Nice! Thanks for making this!
I love Gravelys, they are just plain awesome.
Gravely for the win!!! Great machines.
Spot on, gravely are the best compact unit around.gear drive agri tire and pto high just dont find stones! We've even used a saw blade on the bush hog deck for brush cutting.sorry to hear about pooch.
Cheers Rob.
I've seen those saw blade setups, they work well.
Had a Gravely two wheel tractor when I lived in Maine. Cut grass, tilled the garden, blew snow. One motor for all the things that needed doing.
They are incredible machines.
Thats not a rototiller. Thats a hand driven bulldozer. I want one. Great job.
These machines are beasts.
That is a beast of a machine sorry about the loss of your dog 🐕Take care this week💚
Thank you Don.
Hey, search RUclips for "power tiller". They are similar walk behind tillers but can cover more area with every run/pass/turn. Only issue is learning to use them. Initially its like walking behind a giant spider that is tough to handle but once you know how to force its claws into the ground and how to steer with very little inputs then it is best thing for tilling works.
I will, thank you.
Jim i got some new videos uploaded of my big garden this year! I wish I had a walk behind tractor like yours! I blew the engine on my old sears gtv16
That sucks Lance. I'll check out your videos tonight.
@@TheTradesmanChannel awesome! Thanks jim. Hope yall had a good weekend
You too Lance
That would of been nice the other day. I used an old front tine tiller yesterday, and my arms are still tingling from the vibration.
I used to do the same thing. It took about an hour if that to work that ground after not being worked in three years. I'll take that all day long.
Lost my old front-tine a few hard years back to a pawnshop. I heard they doubled their money on it.
Hey bud that tiller is a beast!! Great machine. I have heard of them but never knew anyone who owned one. Thank you for sharing it.
These machines were just great in their time and still are.
@@TheTradesmanChannel looks like a small truck rear-end modified to fit a walkbehind tractor.
Looks amazing ,Why dont they produce this any longer.
I had a gravely with a snowplow on it! From the 70s had a set of drags and chains!
Nice, I bet you miss it.
@@TheTradesmanChannel Yeah they are beasts! The equipment today is crap compared to the real steel of yesterday! No comparison really!
Never seen a beast like that. Very impressive. I will have to continue beating the ground with my troy built horse. Cant compete with the gravely but, it is what I got.
You run what you have. Those horses work well, especially after you get the sod busted up.
On our annual trip to Kansas. Got on I-70 and drove West. Many of the farmer's fields haven't been touched yet. Huge fields with nothing but weeds. In Missouri drove thru tornado warnings - huge downpour. It rained so heavy I was doing 35 in a 70 zone. Thought I saw a small tornado roping down to the ground. There was no cover so I kept going. Visibility was so bad I couldn't see the tail lights of the car in front of me. Got off to get on another highway - 4 accidents in about 10 miles. The last one had a tractor/trailer's cab sitting on the ground - the wheels were on the side of the vehicle.
Great bit of kit.
Super pozdrav 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Good job, chop those dandelions up. I like green grass, the hell with the yellow weeds. I spray my yard myself and the birds and worms are doing just fine. The only dead birds are the drunk Robins that might crash into the windows after chowing down on fermented flowering crab berries. Thanks for the update and sharing your spring chores. That Gravely does quick work of the garden plot.
@Mr T God bless you, you can have them.
That is one Heavy Duty rig! Looks very well balanced too.
They are great, you can still find them and the parts for them.
I love it ! 👍👍👍
them old gravelys were real nice machines back then I look every now then for 1 with the pieces for it
I find them quite often up here. Great machines.
Great video
Wow thats some rototiller i have never seen one as powerful as that and i have used a lot of them ,
Paul these things will eat dirt in a hurry.
Its a great unit i couldn't believe how fast it worked.
Pretty badass! Thanks for sharing.
Good evening.
That thing is a beast!
Hey Mike. They were great machines.
Great looking machine ! I just took delivery of my little tiller ! It’s a Mantis 4 stroke brilliant little machine for garden and vegetable beds ! 🏴🏴🏴🏴
Those little fillers are great for weed control.
TheTradesmanChannel this one gigs 9 inches wide and 10 inches deep, used one before and when I got this new allotment my Mrs ordered me one, the piece of ground is only about 30 feet by 100 feet ! 🏴🏴🏴🏴
That is perfect.
Powerful Gravely 💪💪💪💪💪💪
Great machines, just had it out mowing tonight.
Cool machine! Love it!
Dude I want one!
You can't go wrong with one, my oldest one is 61 years old and it's a beast.
I’m in Texas if you want one
Is that a 10 horse? Im going to look at one on Sat. I have a 63 Li with rotary plow, tiller, 30 inch mower and snow plow. I need a daily driver upgrade power unit.
Sorr, i can see a 12 on it. Nice machine. Im looking at a 10.
The 10 horse is an excellent machine. You will love it.
" Gravely "
One Hard working Machine
Hey how often should you till the garden
Where do you find a machine like that. I have never seen anything like it. It must be old there isn't any safety guard around that tiller. lol :)
then you havent seen a jd model 33 tiller . this mounts of the back of jd garden tractor. driven by tractors pto.
I have used a JD tiller before on a tractor, it does very well but I have to say what that took two passes to do I do in one with this machine, that said, the tractor is faster with the amount of ground one can cover.
Just curious as to your opinion on no-till gardening/farming. Thx.
I've never tried it but I know folks who have with mixed results.
They couldn't sell one of them today ! There are no safety guards or kill switches or auto shut-offs etc etc., but they did the work better than most "modern safe" tools.
You got that right. This model actually has safeties on the pro and kill switches...they of course are null and void now.
I HAd a 12 hp convertible, reel mower, 30" 40" rotary, cultivator, tiller, snow blower, sulky, dual tires, ,,,,for about 10 yrs,,,sold it,,,,bought it back 4 yrs later,,,sold again after another 7 yrs,,,,they are quality, adaptable, powerful, easy to own, haul, and never cost me a cent,,,,sold at final time for more than i paid originally,,,,,,,what else can i say??? oh,,i did have to replace cone clutch one time, oil and filters change, several times,,,,,
I need one of those with a sickle bar mower
Check out BCS. I got a similar machine - 2 wheeled walk behind tractor - this year. I have a rotary plow, flail mower, and utility cart. They make sickle bar mowers, dozer blades, chippers, trash/water pumps - a huge range of attachments. Earth Tools BCS out of Kentucky has a thorough website and a range of demonstration and instructional videos too.
I've been wanting one of those for a long time
@@TheTradesmanChannel It's my first piece of farm equipment - so far so great.
Hey Jim long time got caught up on life duties haha still have that blade sharpening unit IL be sending you one day. Those old walk behinds definitely had they're place on a small acreage for sure. I would love to find one some day still looking at an old case 444 yard tractor as an option also
It has been a long time, life happens though. Really good to hear from you.
Dear Jim,
I guess one could see another project in the making by adding caterpillars & a seat; maybe if you're feeling adventurous you could add some central heating for the coming winter & just before that you could air conditioning too!!! I suppose this is representative of life on a homestead. Very good show. Kind regards.
I have a seat for it.
@@TheTradesmanChannel Dear Jim,
Thank you very much for your courteous & hearted reply. Well that's a good start, all you need now is a set of caterpillars & a few more goodies to turn this lovely beauty into your dream machine. You might have some convincing to do to Mary Rose (not sure she'll buy it!!!, I let you worry about that one. Mind you you could always try the practical angle of owning such a devilishly concocted apparatus being the perfect tool around the farm???. Kind regards.
Hey Whats this Song called Im Alice can't find it anywhere?

@@TheTradesmanChannel Awesome Thankyou very much, enjoy your trip with your Son Have a great time.
There was one, I used it to cut a pair of drive strips through a lawn about forty years ago, I can’t remember what it was called, but you started it with a slow match which you screwed in,opened the decompressor, and swung the handle till you nearly fainted. The thing was huge like a austin mini with handles on and it crabbed like a B. It cut a swathe 9” deep by18” wide into a hard old lawn. Four passes and done ! the worst bit was getting the thing on and off the truck. I have a vague memory that the engine was a Lister but it was a long time ago.
it looked nothing like the one you have there, think of a tractor engine with small wheels and two handles at the back. Starting was made harder by not being able to tell if the slow match had gone out or not, took a while.
Now that is something I would love to see.
Could it have been a Trusty Tractor or Howard Gem, from the UK?
The Potterer maybe the biggest of the Howards, but I seem to remember it being a bit more like an iron horse with rotovator blades, I do remember the thing was about eight feet long,( the full length of the back of a transit van)
Sorry my memory of one day in 70/71 is not so good, But the sheer power and weight of the thing impressed me ! earned me a a few quid as well !
I have been trying to find the singer and the song in the first couple of minutes. Who is it?
I'm trying to find it for you. I get all of my music from Epidemic Sound. The name of the song is "Drop Down" I believe.
@@TheTradesmanChannel Thanks. You noting the source enabled me to find the artist. Evelynn Ray. BTW I did buy the 1990 Professional 10 with tiller, rotary plow and 30 inch brush hog mower. Works great!
What attachment is that?
That is a rotary plow. You can still find quite a few of them.
I bet those are hard to come by. I wonder how many made it out west.
You find them mostly from NY to South Carolina. There are still quite a few out there.
I’m in Texas with gravely for sale
Hey Jim, isn’t that the same machine they used to dig out for the the Lincoln tunnel? Lol
You never know. There was a small excavator made for these machines.

How deep does it go
I can get around 12" depth with it.
Tubular, I never saw such a beast.
I am surprised you've never seen one.
I don't remember one with the attachment on the front like that.
The walk behinds were all front mounted machines.
not too much of the old fellas Jim wont take long till you get there too.Great machine seems to work well.
Goes faster every year, helluva thing.
RIP pup.
Hey friend you think graverly is strong than bcs tillers
I don't know to be honest, I really like the adjustability of the BCS. As for strength, time will tell.
Have fun. Why not give us a close up of the tractor and the tools you have for it.
Hey Jim,
Hard to beat an old Gravely, especially with the 12hp Cast Iron Kohler !
Do you have the right side to the tiller up front ?
I have modified a TroyBilt Horse model from an 8hp to a Modified 14hp King Kong Kohler, which puts out around 17-18hp with an enlarged exhaust, bigger carb and bored as big as you can. As bad azz as that thing was, I don't think it could hold a candle to that Gravely !
King Kong Kohler are modified Kohlers my father used to build for tractor pulling at the fairs all through Ct and Mass. Not bragging, but we destroyed a lot of other tractors.
Anyway, sorry so long, wanted to say hello and really sorry to hear about your pup, that is a terrible thing to have to do.
Take care, feel better, catch ya !!
Man we could be friends.
And that's not even an "old" Gravely....circa early 80's
What is that song/artist?

Thank you. =0)
The garden is becoming more and more a luxury as owning the equipment to work them becomes too expensive,,,,time was you could even use a mower with attachments, nowdays no matter what option you go for you gotta pay ridiculous for. nice video btw.
You are spot on. I picked one of these up for $40 once.
you don't even have to have equipment to work a garden.
as far as luxury, growing your own food is almost a necessity with today's depleted soil on big farms.
Sorry about the hound, that machine is a little beast, modern ones are not built like that anymore, go give the old leg a rest.
Get direct drive unit we had old Gravely that we used to cut the grass out in the field nothing was big but I had a big old round disc shaped front on it and it was set up like that but I saw the symbol on there and I knew that was a Gravely when you're playing the video when I was a kid I used to run one of those you could sit on it seat and it had that you put it in gear just like you do that one and then I had to go all around the yard doing the whole feel the same way you did that......
I have the seat for it as well as the mower you speak of. They are great machines.
Those jeans looked quite new. Are you playing outside in your school clothes?
Maybe, don't tell the boss lady.
Is that an old Gravely?
It is one of the the newer models they made, I do have two other ones. One is a 1958 and the other is a 1961. I prefer this newer one with its electric start and four speed transmission.
Except a BCS or Old Howard Rototiller.
Really can't argue the BCS for sure, I'm not familiar with the other. BCS took over where the Gravelys left off.
number uno
Good afternoon
Prof you looked like the leg was giving you some stick, exercise is OK but not to much.Time to rest it I think
What I know about those vintage Gravelys is any parts you need are CRAZY expensive.
Not too bad if you search Craigslist. I picked up a running machine with a snowblower on it for $40 a few years ago. Most people have no idea as to what they have.
I've got one of the L1s I also have the rotary, tiller, and bushhog attachment+others. I agree....nothing can touch them today. and DEFINITELY don't get in front of one......it may only be rated at 6-7hp......but they are stronger than modern day stuff.....the bush hog laughs at 1.5in saplings.
I love the Bush hog on mine. Love these machines period.
I ain't trading in my tractor for one of those 😂 PS sorry about the family pet
I don't blame you. I have a few tractors and I still grab this thing for small jobs.
HAHAHAHAA good ole farmer fixes,, David Bradley had similar equipment
Yes they did but they didn't have the front end PTO's, that's what really made these things awesome.
That's because it's a gravely
Damn right
Get some chains on those tires. It will be an entirely different machine.
I see Dandelions are in full crop with you just as they are here in England right now too! Whoopee! Does what you’re doing do anything to control them?
I'm plowing up the garden plot there. As for the dandelions, I like them, adds some spring time color. When they go to seed they look terrible.
Ok! As well as looking at the flowers, do you eat the leaves? A nice bitter addition to salads so long as they haven’t had exposure to too many exhaust fumes.
They're not too bad if you get them young.
🤤
You can find these pretty cheap sometimes.
TheTradesmanChannel that thing rips Jim! I have a tow behind and watching that monster chew up the sod was causing drool to seep from my face! My garden is almost in.
