This is one of the best BookTube videos I've watched. Heartfelt and more than interesting. I'm in much the same place as you - retired and with unlimited time to read, a book nook of my own, a dog for central heating and able to afford any book I want. It's time to give something back and the books-for-convicts idea sounds great.

I have been fortunate enough to donate money to reading is fundamental and my little local library is between a primary school and an elementary school so I will donate books to the library that covers that particular age range as that is the librarians focus. It really touched me that most of the library is focused towards children verses all for adults a maybe a tiny section for the kids.
I was under the impression that the prison system in many places do not allow physical books but only ebooks and then you have to use their devices which are prohibitively expensive.
Like your ideas about what to do with $1,000,000 on books. I'm not sure how or what group donations to prison libraries, but I know some used book stores and some charities that do donate books to the local prisons. It's such a useful gift - and a pretty satisfying way to clean out your own bookshelves from time to time. Better than just dumping those books in the Goodwill bins.
