  • The Shades of Death Trail in Hickory Run State Park, located in the southwestern corner of the Poconos in Pennsylvania, has an intriguing name that might evoke curiosity and a touch of mystery...
    (1) The Shades of Death trail got its name from the dark forests, numerous swamps, and rocky, unfarmable soil that the first European colonists encountered. There are several theories about how the trail got its name. (2) One theory is that two wealthy local men dammed a creek that ran through the narrow valley between houses they had just built and named it after the wraithlike vapor formations they often saw rising off it on cooler mornings. (3) Another theory is that the area was once a swampy morass that harbored countless mosquitoes which led to a number of deaths due to malaria. (4) Yet another theory is that the road was originally known as “The Shades,” because of the low hanging trees which formed a canopy over the length of the street, and that many murders occurred there, causing local residents to add the sinister “of Death” twist to the formerly pleasant “Shades” name.

I took my daughter and nieces in the death trail many years ago. We camped at Hickory Run State Park many many times. Our favorite. Did you do the boulder field yet? Great videography!

So many pretty shots and scenes. Great camera work. I've hiked this trail a few times before, but not recently. I forgot how pretty it is.

It's probably my favorite short trail to do thus far! I had just about finished and on my way back there was easily 10 people all around the big Falls area and the parking lot was full! I'm glad I had the falls to myself when I did!
