Hello! I am not a ceramicist but I have done some work with ceramics in studio classes. I was told when I was young to be careful not to leave air gaps inside the clay, as hot air expands and may cause the piece to explode in the kiln. I’m wondering how these cups do not have this issue when you fire them? Thank you!
Thank you for your comment Ren😊. I believe many people have been taught same thing. I’m not a scientist so I can’t give you a super answer. The explosion is caused by the moisture. Wet clay explode definitely. Small amount trapped air makes a swollen spot but doesn’t cause the explosion. I was discussing about this with friend who studied a science. The air expansion is under the capacity of clay and glaze movement. That is our conclusion. Maybe wrong😆. If someone can explain please join our discussion.
Additionally, you need to make sure your pot is super dry!! before firing. As I said above the moisture is the cause of explosion. The water boiling point is 100 centigrade then becomes to steam to expand in large scale.(1500 times? maybe) . Some articles said the air also can go through the clay porous ( not glaze) . There is an unglazed part on the pot always.

It's like when a paint or coating on a surface doesn't stick well and forms gaps or wrinkles, leaving parts uncovered. In pottery, crawling happens when the glaze contracts or pulls away from the clay while drying or during firing, leaving areas with little or no glaze coverage. if the area is large it sometimes very effective. I have large flat plate like this. but I don’t want it happen at the cup internal corner. I hope this helps.

Thank you for your question 😊. You can close while trimming. The pot shrinks a lot from wet stage to the trimming stage. At this point if I don’t have an air vent the trapped air can not go anywhere and break the wall. After trimming the pot’s shrinkage is less so I normally don’t have a problem. please dry the pot very well. Any moisture inside will give the explosion 😅. The trapped air doesn’t. The moisture does.
I have a question about the holes you make, and how it works with glazing. Obviously without a hole it will explode in the kiln. Sometimes the glaze could seal the hole and cause a problem, no?

The pin how has to be closed completely with glaze. please check other comments we have discussed about this. so please make sure the pot is super dry for both firing and pin holes should be filled completely.
Near 13:40 you attach the greenware to the wheel "using skimmed clay". I've never seen that before! Would you please explain it in more detail in a future video? 🙏
Judging by what I've seen from other potters, I'm assuming they've used a bit of slip painted on the bottom of the workpiece in a ring shape. This would then dry quickly and adhere the workpiece to the wheel.
Thank you for your comment Stobber😊 Skimmed clay in this case is , I scraped the outside wall clay down with wooden tool and and push this clay down the wheel so it seals the pot’s edge to the wheel. In this video to reduce the length I didn’t include much details about trimming, but all previous videos showing how I do. I only put the water at the bottom of the pot. I think other people use soft clay. After you checked my previous videos and if you are still not sure please let me know.

I heard the ceramic lecturer said the air doesn’t give the explosion only moist does. The outside of the air pocket temperature is higher than the air pocket’s one. Also there is unglazed foot ring. I wish I can explain in better way. I will study more!
It is true. I fired a big sculpture that was completely closed and glazed all over. No explosion. But it was super super dry and I did a drying cycle before the firing.

The explosion is caused by moist not the air. I assume “trim hole” means the vent hole after trimming, if so this vent hole needs to be glazed to seal the air pocket. You can cover the hole after trimming and bisque fire it as long as you dry the pot completely. You can cover the hole with glaze also, again you have to dry the pot completely before the firing. Question: You mentioned making another hole after trimming; is this just kept open while you dry the greenware to bone-dry state? do you close this hole before bisque firing? After? do you keep this hole open forever? I don't see it on your finished cups, but perhaps there is one on each cup. Thanks!

My wheel setting is much higher than useful to avoid back pain😅 So I need to anchor my arms on the splash pan. This tube works very well.

I haven't watched the video yet, but how do you prevent the cup from exploding in the kiln? Do you poke a hole in the vessel somewhere before firing?
