Yeah I was about to say this. Especially in the days before path traced GI. When things had to be lit with well placed lights faking bounce lighting and such. But even when you have fancy pants real bounce lighting you'll still need to add more unrealistic light sources to achieve certain looks or shots!
@@swordofkings128 totally, this guy has no idea what he's talking about, anyone who's even remotely familiar with 3d software knows that scene lighting is far more complex than one or two lights, even with or without ray tracing or global illumination
Typically characters are lit with a minimum of three lights. called a three point setup, this includes the primary light, the fill light, and the back light. But obviously more or less can be used as the scene is required.
I’m a professional lighting artist in the AAA video game industry and I always use from 5 to 50 lights to light a cutscene. Bet that Pixar uses at least 100 in each shot, bare minimum. The effects they used on bmax is sub-surface scattering, transmission and maybe even some slight amounts of emission, but not sure about that last one. You can see the same type of scattering inside candle wax, where it’s just transparent enough to feel bright even in the shadows.
former 3D artist here. i was a modeller on season 2 of Clone Wars. what i understood from the lighting guys was that at minimum, each scene in Clone Wars had 20-30 lights at minimum, and that was for simple scenes. even with GI, back in 2014-2016, no way that a Pixar or Disney movie only had only "1 or 2" lights.
It’s certainly less than 100 because of global illumination, which you don’t get in games unless you’re baking or using lumen with rtx, which gets closer to pre-rendered gi/raytracing. Another advantage pre-rendered has is being able to split a scene into layers, make adjustments in Nuke then composite the scene together. The translucency effect comes from the sss materials, as you said. A scene will almost never have one or two lights because fills are still needed to beauty light and eliminate harsh shadows. You can do lots of cool lighting scenarios with a translucent character.
@@jonathandavis9507 You can have beautiful scenes with 2 lights, heck even only one sun, but it's a big challenge. But doable! Especially if you use real-time GI (lumen or others) you can manipulate your bounce lighting with smart placement of your high albedo objects, etc, so it's technically doable. There's some scenes on Avatar FOP where I used only one or two lights and the existing sun! Though Pixar doesn't bother with this kind of challenges lol they don't have to spare computer power like us in real-time, they can blast the full stack of SHD lights everywhere.
