I feel like this would be a good song to play at that climactic moment in a film, right before a big explosion goes off, and everything slows down, and the cute moments the main character experienced earlier flash in warmer tones until the final seconds. Then the explosion flattens everything, and the screen cuts to black as the final notes play.

Honestly it is rare that a song/piece of art brings me to tears, but watching this again, thinking about the world, life and love- this song is so incredibly deep- with the funny and dooming twist of the video, making light of an awful situation with love.. emotional, amazing art.

I’ve been feeling so trapped in my own mind recently and lost. This evening I looked out my window and saw a pretty sunset. Without hesitation I got out of bed and started running. I ran up a huge hill, got to the middle of a field where there were no people or houses. This song came on, and everything was perfect. I lay down in the grass and took in that sunset, it seemed unreal..... I literally have never felt the free after sprinting up that hill and throwing myself down on the grass. I felt so happy and free in that moment it was so perfect, almost too perfect. In the moment I realised everything happens for a reason and this song and that sunset didn’t happnen by chance, it happened when I needed it most and I sobbed my heart out alone on that hill.

I heard the cover first and now I’ve found the original. I know everybody’s comparing but Sarah of course sang it well but Matt, boy I watched this video with my jaw dropped the whole time. He exuded so much emotion through his voice and lyrics and the video is spectacular. So imo I prefer Matt’s. I just was floored. Not taking away from Sarah she has a beautiful voice. i personally prefer this version. don’t get me wrong, sarah’s cover is nice as her voice is amazingly powerful, but the emotions are captured more subtly in a greater, raw depth in this one. matt’s tone and slight accent also gives an old type of feeling that makes it more resonating and beautiful.

This song feels so special, especially because when someone makes such a incredible hit of a song they usually milk it,but Matt lets the song breathe and doesn't try to milk it.
Although this could be a social commentary on our world right now which would be wonderful, I also think it could describe a relationship that’s dying, and the two partners know it’s going to end soon but pretend everything is ok anyway. They act like they love each other and try desperately to keep alive a flame that they know already went out, and I think it’s a very powerful message especially since you can imagine the agony of losing hope in a once perfect relationship, and having to just watch it fall apart from the inside. I love the way Matt uses metaphors of death to describe love, as it can bring so much emotion into a piece. It’s so real sometimes it can be hard to listen to, which i think is very important; I love music that can challenge oneself.

sarah puts emotion on her voice, it seems like she is in her death bed, but still, refuses to die, and accept her fate, it is truly beautiful. As for Matt, he sings with passion, and at the same time, shows aceptance. he knows he will die, and the world will end, but he'll die with the love of his life.

I really do love how this song feels anxious, defeated, and yet accepting. There's nothing that can be done but for them to spend their final moments together. It's knowing the bombs are coming, without a doubt they've been launched, but not knowing how much longer until they hit. This song shatters my heart every time I listen to it. The nuclear threat horrifies me beyond words, keeps me awake. It's so depressing to think that humanity is willing to end lives like that-and maybe even end the world. Why would we do that? There is no good reason. No one should ever have that much power.

Sarah's cover and the original give off different vibes to me. Sarah's is one of desperation and fear. Like you can see the end nearing and you know its futile but you can't help but still struggle and rage against it. The original is more languid, content. Instead of despair, there's just nostalgia and a quiet sadness. A longing for something more mixed with fondness. Like you can see the sky falling, the huge ball of fire that's coming right at you, and you're sitting on the porch with a beer in hand and a smile of acceptance on your face, ready for the world to cave in.

[TW: suicide and self harm] Now, think of this: 5 characters, 4 scenes. A dancer making her final presentation having to smile. A couple sitting in a roof top joking around while both looking tense but trying to hide that. One teenager looking out of their window in a 10 floor building, the sky is pinkish and is very polluted, out of the building is a very busy city with people stealing food and objects. Another teenager hiding in their bathtub holding a knife and looking at it curiously. The scenes changes with the song. As the chorus come, the couple are now drinking something, the dancer does not pretend to smile anymore, the person is the window leaves the window and the teenager in the bathroom looks in the mirror. As soon as the chorus ends, a scene of the couple painting each other’s face laughing, cuts to the teenager is the bathroom having bloody hands and their sleeves completely soaked of blood. The person in the window has scissors. The chorus starts and when the part saying “the earth runs to the ground” the dancer takes her final bow, the couple tilt their heads to each other, the person is the bathtub hugs their knee and the person jumps out of the window. The next scenes are the dancer leaving the theater and going to the beach, where she throws her pointe shoes in the water and lays down in the sand. The person is the bathtub collides as the bathtub is filling with water mixed with red. The person finally reached the floor and you can see a glimpse of the dancer on the background, as people pass through the dead body not caring about it, even stepping on it. The couple looks at themselves and smiles as a bomb explodes in the background

This song is amazing and I have become obsessed with this man the past week. Some of his new songs that he released on his album this year are top notch.
Heard the Sarah C version first, then researched the original. He deserves most of the credit because he wrote the song and it captures the original melancholy dissonance I think it was going for.
But hers is so haunting and pain filled. Just shows you how a key change in a song can change the vibe and how it’s perceived.

My fiancé is a recovering alcoholic and this song hits every button.
We've been together and apart for going on 9 years. Best friends but never had a chance to be together until now. It just wasn't in the cards. After our last blowout argument, he went into a recovery program and started treatment. But, alcoholism is a disease and recovery is not linear. We've been through it, but we haven't been through all of it. From his years of drinking he aqcuired a disease in his stomach and is at serious risk of devoloping cancer as a result. Every time he relapses, his risk increases, and I see it every time he gets sick.
I dont know what is to come for us, but I do know that if life hands us that nuclear bomb, theres nowhere I'd rather be than right next to him. He's my world and naturally, if it ends I am going to go, too.
In the time he and I do have together here on earth, we share every beautiful moment and small piece of joy we find, including this song. This is our love language and this song sings it beautifully, thank you Mr. Maltese ❤
