Andrew Lagno Yeah... It had so much potential but ended in a shitstorm. It went from fighting god-like beings in mechs to Shinji talking to screen on text. It was so bad they had to redo the whole ending and it still didn't make any semblance of sense. They even made a movie to try to get away from both horrible endings and can't figure out how to fix the black abyss of characterless bitchness that is Shinji.
actually the first ending was like that because of a lack of time and budget and the ending from the end of evangelion wasnt that much of a shitstorm if you connect the dots ;)

The End of Evangelion is amazing though, a true acid trip with great music and animations, one of the craziest things I've ever seen
