I heard RP at the Edinburgh Festival in 2017 singing a recital in German, Russian, Czech and English. His English was impeccable, as the rest of it. His dynamic range as well as compass was extensive. A musician, an artist. There were some thrillingly visceral moments when he opened up the top of his voice in forte passages. He also had an authority. Vocally it all flowed. No straining. It was great! There are still great singers out there.
I confess that felt shivers down my spine when the interviewer said "king Marke". That act II monologue at the Met... oh boy. So humane, so full. I could barely sleep that night.
I absolutely wished that I could interview this dude, this great basso cantante. I love watching interviews and I've already done an interview with a basso profondo from Greece (an amateur, but still that dude had one deep voice).
He's really amazing - his King Philip is probably the best I have ever heard, and that's coming from a Furlanetto fan :D Just so vulnerable and human under the mask of the cold tyrant.

Not only when he sings but also when he speaks his voice is magnificent. Is he unmasked Darth Vader?

My Favourite Bass
My 2nd favorite bass within the world of opera after Cesare Siepi.
Sorry but I changed my mind recently. I still like Pape's speaking voice, but I don't like his singing voice that much.
Please let us hear more and more!!!
There are bass-baritones. They might have asked him that question. But they rarely ask tough questions.
