Nice one Dennis. That was a very informative video. Emphasising things from an employers point of view helps filter everything down to the necessary. I'll remember that. 👍🏿
Kenny's music player comes straight from Dev Ed's RUclips tutorial, the landing page from his React Course. He didn't even bother changing the images or the styling. Who would ever find out? It's not like he has half a millions subscribers, right?
Thanks a million Dennis for reviewing my portfolio. You are a true inspiration to me. And I look forward to learning more from you and becoming better.
Some good advice I've seen regarding demo projects that require user login is to have a demo user. It makes it easier for the person reviewing it to jump in and see the functionality of the app. A lot of people are just going to say, "Yeah, I don't have time for that" if they have to create an account.
It's kinda sad how people take a course and just put exact same projects into their portfolios. At least change or add some functionality and make it not look the same. Like I see way to many people copy instructors and their portfolios are just all course projects.
@@compton8301 Well that's what courses aim for. To help students understand tech and teach them how to build projects. But they should not copy them 1:1 and claim it's theirs
thanks for the great advice, I also have one big project for a company I worked for, so hopefully when I start applying I can use that as the main item.
Hi Dennis, can you help me , we have django application running on red hat server, I am unable to perform write operations for data base, giving attempt to write read only data base error

I have more than 5 projects on django . Insta clone works ditto to instagram, youtube clone with my own concepts and more features, advanced accounting site, survey website , and a simple blog. Not best at frontend designs but neat and clean with html, css, js and ajax. Thinking of advancing these with Vuejs. Still think I have just learned some pieces of programming. More complex
I noticed a lot of these portfolios have really nice animations. But I’m thinking are all these animations really necessary? Because most websites really don’t have this much amount of animations, just basic hover effects, drop down menus and things.
If you have your company already something tells me that you have lookup or find the better way to charge as a company for your services, like the project that you refers as to in your resume, so could you do a video explaining your criteria for what to charge to a client and why to charge it when billing your services.. that could be a very interesting video to watch
Hey it’s still powerful. Not ideal but it works. I know a guy that built an entire wear house management system for his company with it. The code was a nightmare but the system was clean.
How do you present the demo of your projects? What database and server do you need to give them for the employers to access them.? How do you do that please help me
There are free platforms like render and railway for hosting python web apps. You dont have to use server-based dbms for portfolio projects sqlite is good enough. You can make demo video of your project and provide links to project's github repo and the project itself to present your project to potential employers.
The part about "jumping out" at the employer... I think it most resembles "advertisinig". Think about how advertising presents their products trying to get YOU (the employer) to buy their product. Ever seen an advertisment that is just so creative that you actually enjoy watching? Ever seen those that are just so horrible and cheesey you CRINGE every time it comes on? The exact same concepts apply to both breakfast cereal and advertising yourself to the "customer" (the employer).
I need some help sir .when uploading your projects on your potfolio. Do you have to pay for a server for each projects just for the employers to be able to access them ?
Dennis I’m so confused, I have an e-commerce web site, only Django, html, css and is, for dB I used MySQL. I want to build an android app for the existing web project. How can I do? I searched for a lot and didn’t found any information about it.
Dennis why don't you create a section on your channel where you show the evolution of your subscribers? The subscribers could send you the projects and you analise them and choose the best ones from a list of 3. This would help many subscribers who are new to programming to get a job vacancy through presentation of the projects.
Thanks a lot for the information but I have a question for you!what do you think how good of a programmer or my project have to be if I am in Poland and I want to apply to a company in United states? like what will be my chances even if my project is a 5** according to you.
I am curious on the portfolio with the Instagram clone and whatsapp clone. I have seen a lot of tutorials online for those two projects. If I was an interviewer I would be less impressed with at least those two projects simply because it could be a copy and paste from a tutorial basically. Do interviewers not really care about such things? Because I would change my portfolio to include a few tutorials and memorizing enough of the code to talk about during the interview if that is all it takes to break in.
It's not about executing the same idea. It's about how clean the code is, how semantic your commits are, if you follow SOLID principles, how well documented and reusable/scalable the code is. You can look at the code and tell if the person is BS'ing in an interview or not. And it's not bad to do a clone - if you want to get hired at some places, ou have to show you can build what everybody needs.
@@AmandaVieiraMamaesouCult true, but in theory if a tutorial was perfect then you would want to copy said tutorial because it is perfect and you don't need massive changes to make it better or anything. And then as an interviewer I would see the same code that is just copy and pasted, essentially. Then I as an interviewer would be forced to ask specifics about each of the project to see if you know what you are talking about. And, if the person is lucky they memorized enough of the code base and talking points to basically bluff their way into the job, or at least get farther into the interview.
It's ok to copy as long as you are not claiming them as your own. As a content creator I freely give out my work. As an interviewer I would encourage you to modify as much as you can.
@@DennisIvy Why would you bother putting a project on a resume that isnt your. By putting the project on the resume it should automatically assumed that the person eithers claims or had worked on it heavily.
Richard I think I already replied to you but I had a chance to talk to Kenny. He told me this was from Dev Ed's tutorial. As long as he doesn't claim these as his own I'm fine with that. As an interviewer I would ask him what he learned from this tutorial and to share his experiences.
