I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
There's a club if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die
When you say it's gonna happen "now"
When exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

Whatever happens, I love The Smiths.
luca t This is one of the best things I’ve ever read. Simple and brilliant
@@mcarterjackson very kind, i was just writing what i felt ❤
luca t No matter how bad things get, you always have Morrissey, Marr, Rourke, and Joyce
Definetly maybe..
But would you leap in front of a flying bullet for them ...
Johnny Marr's tremolo sound in the beginning of this song always raises goose bumps. So badass!
He is my guitar god. I read an interview in Rolling Stone (iirc) a few years back, where Marr talks about how complicated it was to get that background rhythm with the guitar, and to actually sync it up for the full length of the track. He didn't have all the fancy toys of today's guitar players. Amazing! No one else has ever really been able to replicate his singing, but jangly, yet melodic guitar style (except *maybe* the Doves' 1st album?). Johnny Marr is, was and always will be "the one" for me.
@@LaraLinx it took him a week to record his part..❤️
Word has it that the sound was found accidentally when he's mucking about with his pedals, gotta love the lad..😂
tremolo's. several amps at once, done many times as they kept going out of sync. stop, start record. the old and more interesting way of doing things versus sampling a loop.
Es épico.
And is completely indebted to Bo Diddley
What i would give to witness the 70s and 80s music scenes in Britain
@Cat Walk I was born in the earliest 2000s but i take your work for that, everything seemed much more artistic and brighter back then (Not that conflict didn't exist but people weren't as self-centered and shallow as they are now and art was nowhere near as materialistic and corrupted as now)
70s where the worst music wise .... it was like a transition period from Rock'n Roll to Pop Music ....They just didn't know what to do next until Music started to become more digitalised. Hence the 80s melodic revival. The 70s where totally boring and bland melody wise !!! There was alot of experimenting ... as I said .... it was definitely a transition period ....with the 80s totally defining Pop Music ... timeless Bands cropping up everywhere.... you just cant compare the 70s with the 80s !!!
@@PolitischTourette the 70s was a great time for music and rock. Led zeppelin was huge. Black Sabbath were in their prime with there album paranoid. Pink Floyd released dark side of the moon, which has gone down in history as one of the best albums of all time. Punk was a revolution and inspired a whole generation of younger people with some really great stuff like the misfits, the Ramones and the sex pistols. 70s was great man
I love in between days
It was great
...so many bands🖒🖒❤
I am suddenly out of quarantine. Im a teen in the 80s. In a club where I can meet somebody who really loves me.
But you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home, and you cry and you want to die.
But you go and you stand on your own...
and you went home and you cried and wanted to die
Best band ever. Since then pop music has imploded. The charts today: a desaster.
Jist Loke spelling
That's not true at all. The Smiths are great, but music has evolved and is liked as passionately as it was back then. Just not by us
This performance is so good it’s crazy that it’s actually real. It’s like out of a movie or something
It's not real, it's missing a 2nd slide guitar.
It was Top of the Pops. Everything was mimed. Usually very badly and often deliberately badly as real bands hated having to mime on the show.
It's as real as anything on tv
u see Morrissey has no mic right ...

Which is why Cobain's send-up singing on 'Teen Spirit' as golden
One of my very favourite The Smiths 🎶🎶🎶 songs . . . 🎉🎉🎉🎉
"you shut your mouth"
Resonates for me very much . . x 🙏
I am human and I need to be loved
Yes yes yes
Yes but not from Humans... I gave up wanting to be loved by humans. Humans are far to selfish and sociopathic evil scumbags. I rather have a dog and a cat.... at least you know exactly what they are up to ... just read body löanguage ... humans lie , cheat and even kill you .... why bother with humans. Let Nature take care of the scum .... Corona all the way !!!
Just like everybody else does
I absolutely adore this song💓💓💓
charming song
OMG, what a theme. What a piece of music and poetry. For those people that felt this at the time, I salute you. What do other generations have to point their fingers at? Exactly!!
Mozart? The Beatles? Elvis? Prince? Marvin gate? Etc etc
This song always gives me chills! So epic! 💣
The joy in janice when she introduces this tune. ❤
She really despised the chap known as Morrissey
speaks to my soul
Mozzers Dance ...is really unique ... thats what you call an authentic "performance ".... LOVE it !!!
Such an old song that still sounds good after 40 years
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
Best band
I love it
It's a line from Jane Austen!
@@dalgettywrong! it's a line from "Middlemarch" by George Eliot. "To be born the son of a Middlemarch manufacturer, and inevitable heir to nothing in particular".
They Smiths best band
We loved the 80s music, we visited local new wave clubs and we enjoyed all that 80s music era had to offer, the best era in music. The Smiths was one of them and we loved them. A few years back, I am driving my daughter to the airport and she goes, do you mind if I play something that I really like, so I said of course. She played this song by the Smiths. I go, wow, the Smiths. She responded asking how do I know the Smiths, but my question was, how does she? Amazing and timeless music and she was completely unaware of me knowing about them and loved the music, because it is great music.
We are human and we need to be loved 😍😍😍
amazing amazing amazing
This is ecstasy.
Superb. One of the greatest bands ever.
God bless you Janice. May you rest in eternal peace..xxx
dang man, killer dance moves
The Smiths forever ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The 70s/80s/90s will never be surpassed, The Best! São Paulo - Brazil - Rock On The Rock V-8 🤙🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
This man is god to me, make my life better since 1980s
We should be thankful to grew up with this music. Sorry kids..
I may not have been around back then, but if anything, I'm grateful to be alive post-80s, rather than pre-80s, becuase it means I can still immerse myself in the music of the past. Better still, with the technology we have today, the 80s is at our fingertips whenever we want, and I don't think I can ask for much more than that.
Smiths Forever
Mozza was and still is the most talented musician and poet EVER. He has huge personality, and really something to say! All these things I‘m missing today from all these auto-tune-„stars“ ...
He is miming 😂😂 😂
true true but this performance was mimed
Stupendous
Smiths forever!!!!
Wish I could just go the fuck back to my childhood this was just fucking awesome
Timeless.....2024
I love how Morrissey dances in here is so beautiful 😍
Free, like no one's watching😀. I always loved his awkward Moz dancing!
He’s gay?
um….that’s “dancing”?
effing awkward
lOLLLL@@Y202RK
He’s an arrogant twot. Great song though
Classic
Proper tune❤️
The Smiths saved music in the '80s. It was going down the drain, then they came along and made brilliant music. Thank you The Smiths 👍
With a few exceptions, the Golden Age of music was, in fact, in 1980’s.
Great era of living 1980's great Riff Memories
R.I.P. Janice Long. Beautiful woman. 👌💕💕💕💕
Love her.
Me encanto desde que la empece a escuchar esta canción

So- my dad and I have had strained relations for years now, but I remember when I was going between his and my moms house he would listen to this song a lot- I’ve been searching for it for, as I said, YEARS and I just found it now, just for that nostalgia - what a relief!!
Have that kind of relationship with my dad as well, the only thing we connect on is certain music. I am glad you found it and whatever feelings it brings!
i would kill to see them live 🥺
Melhor e maior banda de todos os tempos .
As a artist Morrisey is a genius. He knew he had to do playblack on this appearence so he performed dancing and feeling the song.
A really powerful song. This song literally strikes my soul because it is so relatable.
How this was not number 1
Really awesome that they're uploading these TOTP clips. Never seen this one before. 🙂
yes.
Amazing💖🇧🇷

Wiresless guitar technology in 1985 😮
How Soon is Now was not on the original version of Meat is Murder. Janice Long was huge fan back in the day so I don't know how she got this wrong. Great song all the same.
I could’ve sworn this song was in the tv show Dark Angel!!
Andy 😭
1980s UK under Margaret Thatcher's conservative government, gave birth to amazing new wave bands. The more expressive the government the more creative the art.
I am human but 'I don't mind if you forget me'.
Now we know where Elaine got her dance moves from.
There were no live on top of the pops
How soon is now was not on the album meat is murder. What is the announcer talking about?
The U.S. release had it on there.
foxbasealpha interesting. Not sure if it really fits the theme or tone of the album so it’s a bit strange but it’s a great song so maybe it would improve the album. Many ways of looking at it.
@@foxbasealpha But this is Top of the Pops, a U.K show?
