Privacy lawyer here, from Europe. There are soooo many things to say about this. Taylor could, theoretically, ask Google to NOT show results with these deep fakes but it'd only work for european users, there's no obligation to do that outside of the EU (but TS has a good relationship with google so maybe it'd be possible). Regarding legislation, in Europe we're far better protected against actions like these, big fines could be put in place (billions for Meta because of the gdpr, for example) and AI regulation (AI Act) is on the way (the document leaked a few days ago and we're (lawyers, DPOs, etc) all studying it). That being said, there's a saying in spanish that goes kind of like "you cannot build doors in the meadow", we can mitigate the impact but once something is on the internet it is incredibly difficult to erase it, almost impossible. To that, we have to add the fact that we don't know how these models are trained or with which kind of information. There were news recently that LAION (a database for AI) had CSAM/images and many famous AI models have been trained with those images... I mean, it goes far beyond the result the app can give you and it is such a complex topic with so many private interests at stake, geopolitical interests... I am truly horrified by the news, I haven't seen any picture which means my twitter is clean of garbage-people. And yes, "it's been a long time coming", we need to look for other options, it is time for users to take back control of their personal information, not just in Europe but everywhere. The positive side is that TS has a huge influence so I hope we can get something positive out of this, even if it's just people learning how important THEIR privacy & data protection is.

No. There is no bright side to this, and the fact that we expect victims to CHANGE THE CULTURE is disgusting when we should be expecting the perpetrators of such a sexually violating issue to NOT SEXUALLY VIOLATE (wild idea ik).

Just like she did for artists owning their masters and streaming services paying their artists fairly, I have a feeling Taylor will again fight for this and set a precedent to prevent it happening to anyone else.
There absolutely needs to be regulations- there are MINORS who have dealt with this. The creators of those images need to be criminalized. It’s sexual assault and I saw how sadly one young teenager unali*ed themselves because of it. Horrifying. Something must be done.

I've noticed the criticism you've received on Twitter for expressing your opinions about Taylor. It's essential for people to understand that diverse opinions and constructive criticism contribute to an artist's growth and creativity. Your vocal stance on the issue is refreshing, and I'm pleased to see you addressing it. Some have labeled you a "fake Swiftie" for your critiques, but I appreciate your sincerity. I hope Taylor is doing well, and those engaging in inappropriate actions should face consequences.

agreed, and on Zach's point in the second half of this video- it's also important for a community to have people who disagree with each other and also aren't afraid to express those dissenting opinions. someone having an opinion you don't agree with is not a personal attack! and trying to scare people into agreeing with you is toxic at best, a clear attempt into facilitating an echo chamber of a community that can turn borderline culty. not only is it "okay" for people within a community to disagree with each other, it's HEALTHY and NECESSARY. but a lot of people- young fan communities especially- tend to have trouble even recognizing that. It just speaks to the wider problems of online communities and social norms Zach pointed out in this video.

Because if one of the most famous women in the World’s images aren’t taken down until they were up for 17 hours, what hope do the rest of us have? The worst part is these men aren't facing the consequences of doing disgusting and dehumanizing things like this. They know what they're doing is wrong and are trying to hide from their 'hate wave', so the fact that no one is doing anything against them is so frustrating. I remember one of them even said that they have done something like this to Jenna Ortega before the Taylor Swift AI situation. Overall, I'm glad that the situation has come to light early enough before they get to other women.

Thank you! I have commented on a few of your videos, i absolutely love your content. You are so articulate, intelligent, thorough and so passionate and aware. This video particularly is so important and very successfully done. I appreciate the time and energy you take to not just educate us on fun (or not fun) aspects of Taylor and pop culture, but to do such a thorough analysis and explanation and advocacy about this situation, flawlessly executing, defending and educating your point. I hope these videos get as much attention as they truly deserve, this is not a subject to be ignored and unfortunately I also feel the pertinence of the matter and I foresee a huge and expedited downward spiral epidemic if we do not start dealing with this in a timely or serious way. Please continue to advocate on this one, I truly believe your gift of spirit is educating others in such a way as well as being a voice for reason. This could easily be an uprising epidemic that involves every demographic as well as careers, family, and the world, collectively, if we dont start proactively controlling the chaos. Well done. By the way, out of curiosity. Are you a college student or a higher education graduate? I am 30 and I reckon youre probably a lot younger, but I gotta be honest, in my adult life as well as a previous student at a very high ranking university... you have such a way of articulation, language, communication and a scholarly vibe, that is bounds above most of the folks ive encountered that have doctorates in some sort of academia. I hope you take over the world lol

The actress Xochitl Gomez talked about this happening to her when she was on Taylor Lautner's podcast. She's still underage and that was the first time I had heard about this especially that its even allowed to happen to minors without repercussions. It's appalling that this is common and also has been happening to Taylor when she was so young. Obviously this affects everyone, but i've also noticed in terms of It's interesting to me the way people tend to make these videos for people who have relatively clean public personas. To me it reads as if they can't stand women who don't sexualize themselves the way the larger culture expects. It saddens me that many celebs wont take legal action because they feel its a lost cause due to the already fast paced proliferation of these images, but as you said it's happening to non celebs as well, so I wish they would use their large platforms to realize this is a problem that extends beyond the world of celebrity.

    • @Augustine0899
      @Augustine0899 4 месяца назад +2

the thing is, if i was a celeb - i would be scared that if i pushed against this trying to support legislation or speak on it publicly, people would make my deepfakes. the fear of retaliation and its consequences are really scary. because you are right, this has been going on since the age of photoshop and even these ai fakes on twt are not limited to taylor swift, its that the few football incels who wanted to humiliate / degrade ts felt powerful while spreading and making such images - punishing her for being in "their" space, which is why this spread to the extent it did. twitter's rules (or lack of them) certainly didnt help.
the xochitl gomez podcast clip made me so mad, i cant even. the lukewarm response and the inability to do anything about stuff like this is insane and a twitter boycott is the only way to go forward. im afraid people wont do it though, in this day and age people just cant be alone with their thoughts at all.

INCREDIBLE VIDEO! It needed to be said. I’ll add, the algorithms on social media sites track EVERYTHING that you do on them. Not just your posts, but your likes, what you comment on and even what you look at. If you look at a tweet for a little bit longer than the others, if you open up the replies and scroll through, the algorithm takes that into account and will show you more. You have the ability to cultivate what you see. If you see something you don’t want to see, scroll past it. Don’t look at the replies, don’t comment, don’t even linger. Just move on.

I have heard there are a couple bills in Congress- the AI Labeling Act and H.R. 3160, Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act. I haven’t done research into what exactly these bills would do, but it is a start, and I hope this technology is taken seriously knowing it’s not just Taylor and other celebrities at risk, it’s everyone. Taylor should be able to not only sue if she wishes to, but press charges. This should be a federal crime, fullstop.

Thank you for covering this important topic! :) You know what I hate most about it? People develop new programs and release them and then do the shocked pickachu face when other people use their technology to harm others. Like, we have enough data on these things to predict this would happen by now. How is it possible it still happens all the time? It's frustrating and, frankly, just dumb. I do understand it takes a long time to make laws and approve of them. But then there should be other laws, like idk, laws that prevent abuse of new technology. Maybe someone's gotta test new technology for weaknesses like this and the company can be legally kept from publishing their technology until they have gotten rid of the issue. Like, with AI generated images it would be something like: The program won't generate pictures of naked kids because that option got disabled by the devs after the person who checks new technology told them it wasn't approved. It shouldn't be that difficult?
BTW I left Twitter some time ago and I have no regrets about it :)

What an informative video, the journalism is shining through! I recently deleted all my social media apps and I never had twitter, but I am glad to hear that the EU is trying to regulate Twitter! Maybe we can be an example for the US and other countries. Thanks for the video Zach, I hope it reaches a lot of people!

This is a wonderful piece. Listened while walking through Dublin tech office land and felt the weight of these
Organisations on my shoulders. Really thought provoking.

it’s so disturbing to me that these kinds of things happen to people every day and there’s literally nothing we can do about it…

I visited the web that is hosting the videos now (didn't see anything) and I checked the dates. This might have exploded now, but theres content dating months ago. And it's scary. The thumbnails are super realistic and truly look like Taylor.

I've seen the wave of bs lately and I hope you're doing okay, people nowadays really do not know rhe difference between an opinion they disagree with and something actually problematic, and it sucks that you have to deal w people who lack too many braincells to tell the difference.

As horrible as it is, I’m grateful it happened to someone with the star power of Taylor this early. She might be one of the only people who can actually impact change not only in legislation, but also (and more importantly) in the cultural conversation around the topic.
There is still an impression that somehow the victim is responsible for fixing/explaining/cleaning up this kind of imagery. If someone like Taylor can’t find recourse, what hope in hell do the rest of us have?
Like you said, people need to expect more from the platforms, the lawmakers, and of each other to critically think about this content instead of just saying “oh wow that’s embarrassing for that girl!” It’s not her embarrassment or shame to bear, this is a sickness of society.

Also, pornhub and xvideos are 2 of the top 10 websites visited in the world and together have more hits than twitter does. Those sites should be boycotted as well as there is so much revenge porn on there.

AI has been an onrising concern for many of us of all visual mediums who make our living in creative industries. Hopefully, and sadly from a horrific situation will effect better regulation and also awareness of the general public who are sharing works and likeness of our years of skill. Now, that’s not related to this which is far more destructive and damaging concern.

Horrific and disturbing! Sadly I don't know if anything can really be done. Any loser with an internet connection can make these sick photos and get them out there in a multitude of ways. I can't imagine how violating it must feel for her.
