One thing I have grossly neglected to mention not just in the video, but also in the comments for 2 months now is the fact that there is an updated version of the Aeon Genesis fan translation called the Orden patch. This patch fixes various issues with the AG version, such as various game breaking glitches and mistranslations. That is 100% the version to play if you do end up getting around to this game. I also recommend looking for the automap hack, which allows you to open up the map by pressing the L button on the super famicom controller rather than having to open your COMP every time. Both the Orden patch and the Automap hack can be found on a certain website whose initials are RH.
I don't think you would get in trouble for talking about a site that only hosts Rom Hacks. They don't house ROMs, just the patches. Unless there's a site called Rom Haven, I think you're golden.
I love how Nyarly always sounds like he's talking down to me even though he isn't lol. Ok, on a serious note, one thing that really got me into Megami Tensei itself was the demons and ideologies of alignment/reasoning. I never truly knew how cool some of the stuff in certain religions, mythologies, and folklore was until I got into this franchise, and that's still something I have a vested interest in today. As someone who loves looking at things from all angles (and is also a huge fan of Fallout New Vegas), the different views of Law, Chaos, and Neutrality and their motivations really take a deep dive into sociological, philosophical, and psychological attributes; there is no objective best choice, but rather something you are subjectively more drawn to. Great video, Macca~!!
Does anybody else find Macca's Jack Frost avatar in the thumbnail image hilariously adorable? It's the way he's smiling with the serious looking eyes that get me.
"One thing I like to do is force my likes and dislikes onto the world at large." Lol You just made an accurate description of more than 75% of the Megaten fanbase.
Very important for anyone that plans on playing the SNES version PLEASE make sure you get the Orden Fix for it. A good while back a good lad named Orden went through the old Aeon Genesis patch and fixed a ton of its problems. It fixes the demon names, the skill names, and fixes a ton of glitches(biggest being in the original AG patch the law route was completely glitched and incompletable). He did a similar patch for SMT2, but that game didn't need it as bad as 1 did. I'd post the pre-patched rom with the fix but I'd doubt Macca would appreciate that.
I had just finished my first playthrough of Nocturne, and then found your video. I was completely sold. And what's better: I went looking for the GBA translation and it was already done by the end of january! There are still some minor bugs to fix, but I'm already playing this version and loving every bit of it. Thank you!
Real talk if this sounds interesting for you but feel it might feel outdated, get your hands on the original smt strange journey for ds it tackles the same themes while having updated gameplay and navigation
Theres something about this video that REALLY sells the good points on why people should play this game...on that note, I think I'm gonna try it out myself.
Man this channel is one of my favourite things in life, the music selection, the humor and how i learn a lot of things with your videos. I still can't believe waifu is a banned word in Twitch's chat tbh.
Dude, this is super well done. Wasn't really interested in SMT I before because of the UI of menus and weird navigation, but the GBA version looks awesome!
It's been a while since I played it and, while the game's story and characters are quite simple compared to recent smt entries, I just can't find the charm this game holds on any other megaten title. It might be because this is one of the few games that truly follow that Kaneko's main principle of making a game where the main character is just an ordinary human. Not a predestined hero or someone with innate superpowers, just a random ass teenager who happened to get caught in the middle of a global catastrophe and survive just to keep having to overcome hardships in a wasteland full of dangers.
Ahh I've been waiting for this, happy to know this video is out and that my clips were of some help at the very least. FYI, there is a updated, polished and bug-fixed version of Aeon Genesis translation which makes the 2002 translation obsolete. People don't need to wait for GBA project really.
Great video ! For all the people who like the OST, check out the Sega CD version of the game's soundtrack on RUclips (or elsewhere), it's entirely remade and it's absolutely amazing (the Ginza theme, especially) !
think about it, you were playing dragon quest, final fantasy, or if you were weirdo, earthbound. Then, outta nowhere comes a cyberpunk post apocalyptic in a demon infested future game where earth was scorched clean by nuclear holy fire, ushered by the plotting of an American ambassador called Thorman, who is in fact the norse god Thor in disguise.... I mean, if you were a kid in the 90`s wouldnt your mind be blown right now? I dont know, keep your final fantasies or dragon quests, I love them too, but my heart belongs to this series.
My history with this game is a thing. I originally got the official translation on my phone the day it came out in 2014, but like so many others, the gameplay made it extremely hard to play and eventually I wasn't able to play it anymore because Atlus stopped supporting it. I started over with the fan translation, but it still took me until just a few months ago - roughly six YEARS - to make it to the end. And I was still in the early midgame when I finally got serious about finishing it this year, as finally, after all that time, I genuinely started enjoying the gameplay despite its obvious shortcomings. When I finally beat it, my pride was immense - but strangely, not over, you know, beating the game. It was all about the journey - both in-game and out. And beyond not being able to finish the official translation with the visionary items, I don't regret a single thing.
Tfw never played an smt game yet. I just like the demon designs which is why I am interested in it. Then again the monster designs are why I get into any monster collecting game.
I legit think SMT 1 is super underrated; If people can still enjoy Pokemon red and blue despite their own flaws I see no reason why people can't enjoy these games.
This was actually the ffirst megaten game I finished. I love this game. Completely agree on the atmosphere being a 10/10. I didn´t love the music at first, but it´s so great at embodeing the spirit of the game and it grew on me so hard.

The hardest part about this game is just navigation, knowing where to go and the mostly high enemy encounter rate. All the bosses from the second half of the game are all too easy.
2 and a half years later, despite my only having touched 10 hours of SMT4 (Which I need to go back to eventually (Will need ro start over tho. ;-;)), I now have the translated GBA version sitting on my Miyoo Mini for me to play wherever the time comes. Almost gave up on it cause it isn't a traditional patch, but I figured it out. Lol. I am curious about this game, so I'd probably end up playing it eventually even if I didnt feel an obligation to after that hassle.
