- Energy consumption costs money, uses natural resources, increases air pollution, and contributes to global warming. We all share responsibility for prudent energy use. The mechanical heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system accounts for a sizable portion of a building’s energy costs. Heat gains and losses from various sources must be offset to create a comfortable, healthy indoor environment. Discarded heat from one location may be useful elsewhere in the building, so it’s logical (and often cost-effective) to recover energy that might otherwise be wasted … particularly in a time of rising energy costs and deregulated utility rates.
