As already said : Shirley Verrett is THE LADY MACBETH forever... here the perfection is reached "rarissime" I have this DVD of course staging is very hard to watch at but the Middle age life was like that and the exceptional cast makes the success of this masterpiece 💕🎶💕
It's rare that the quality of the acting matches that of the voice in opera. Her acting is superb and is perfectly matched with that glorious soprano of hers. She OWNS this scene!
Not only is/was Shirley a GREAT singer...AND.. a beautiful, intelligent AND lovely human....BRAVISSIMA DIVA!!!! What a voice...and phrasing..incomparabile!!!
Verrett was matchless in vocal technique and interpreting her roles. So much empathy required to FEEL the role she was singing! A very moving performance! And done with such an amazing voice! Brava!

I love Verrett, and her Lady Macbeth. She is the only Lady I have heard who I can put on the same level as Callas in this role. That being said, this movie version is a huge disappointment. The very fact that the sound track was pre-recorded, with the filming being a lip syncing to her own recording takes away from both her phenomenal voice and her tremendous acting ability. The true magic of opera is the ability to display great drama thru the combined idiom of singing and acting all merged into one. The true greatest artists that achieved this ability were La Callas and La Verrett. But the making of this movie unfortunately separated those two phenomenal talents of Verrett, basically destroying the entire ethos. Don't get me wrong. She still sounds amazing, and is still an amazing actress here. But in this particular venue, the 2 are no longer one and the same. We miss out on the true greatness that was La Verrett.

She owned this role. They called Verrett "La Nere Callas". RIP my star. Your voice will always be remembered and beloved.
