  • In this sequel to The Jolson Story, we pick up the singer's career just as he has returned to the stage after a premature retirement. But his wife has left him and the appeal of the spotlight isn't what it used to be. This time Jolson trades in the stage for life in the fast lane: women, horses, travel. It takes the death of Moma Yoelson and World War II to bring Jolson back to earth - and to the stage. Once again teamed with manager Steve Martin, Jolson travels the world entertaining troops everywhere from Alaska to Africa. When he finally collapses from exhaustion it takes young, pretty nurse Ellen Clark to show him there's more to life than "just rushing around".

My mother loved Al Jolson and that got into my head when I was young. I probably watch The Jolson Story & Jolson Sings Again maybe 3 or 4 times a year. I love the films each time I watch them. My 2 favourites are in Jolson Sings Again, I Only Have Eyes For You & Sonny Boy. I think Jolson's voice sounds better at this stage of his life than ever.

I've heard that Jolson did not sing just one song and let the audience go home. He sang over an hour and nobody left.

Around 4:03 we are told that Jolson will sing one song and let the people go home. From notes of the evening I have read, Jolson sang for an hour and a half and gave the younger entertainers a master-class in showmanship. Anyway, who would believe that Jolson -- given an audience -- would sing only one song?

Between 1:44 and 1:58, when Parks is looking over all the celebrity names (for the benefit) in the newspaper, I recognized all the names, except three of them.

Al Jolson struggled with his father, who was a Jewish cantor, to sing non-religious songs and have a career in show business. He ran away from home to work for his show business mentor who recognized his talents. As I understand it, he had to fight to rise in his career in many instances. It is rotten when Hollywood and others can cancel the careers of people who still have great talent but are considered irrelevant or two old. I can also understand why his career was number one but think his wives certainly needed to be number two at the very, very least. Maybe his last marriage and family provided him with some security but maybe not. He was certainly one of the greatest stars in his time.

The only other guy who can lip synch this good is Michael Pare in Eddie and the Cruisers. I never thought it was anyone else.
