I've seen this video many times over the years, and it is an excellent example of the soft-hard flow in Okinawan Karate. There are some other great examples by Sakumoto Sensei and some of his peers on RUclips as well. He was my wife's HS History teacher, by the way, at Nago HS.
@KARATEbyJesse I can only recommend going to any of his seminars - what ever "style" you train. I had the opportunity to participate to a Sakumoto seminar nearly 20 years ago. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot.
One thing however, all Karate training has taught me, is humility; and the sense both to realise that all martial arts ultimately belong to all peoples, irrespective of race, place of birth or ethnicity, and that it is impossible to reach an informed conclusion about anyone or anything without adequate information - by definition. Thanks again for your comment.
@modernmarvel The hand movement has many interpretations including: 1) Escape from a wrist lock. 2) Blocking and clasping a shove/punch/grab - classic White Crane Kung Fu.
@sergeiboi - interesting question. Although the kata has been adopted into Shito Ryu, it is adapted from an archaic Okinawan style, (of the Nikaima family), called Ryuei Ryu, which itself is directly taken from a now non-extant form of Southern Chinese Kung Fu.
this is my bucket list kata. some day... also, some schools have a lax approach to the stiffness of the fingers. my shotokan school says keep fingers together, but some keep fingers spread during open hand techs, such as shutos. wonder why, personal preference? seems like tomato, tomotto to me if it works for you.
@kevinnguyen209 This is an Okinawan style called Ryuei Ryu, and the kata is called 'Anan' after its originator. It is very difficult to find authentic Ryuei Ryu instruction outside of Okinawa.
Yes he did travel to the Fujian province and trained under Ryu Ryu Ko. I recommend reading Okinawan Karate by Mark Bishop, the information of the style is in the book.
Oh thanks. By the way your the greatest on youtube right now; all these videos are incredibly inspiring. And one las question before i stop bothering you. Does he have his own dojo and if so where is it?
I totally agree, that Okinawan Karate, (be that any form of Shorin Ryu, Kempo or Ryuei Ryu), is a fascinating and entirely pragmatic form of amongst other things 'Street self-defence', particularly in a 'jutsu' rather than 'do' approach, incorporating all 3 levels of kata bunkai, and the associated drills.
Thank you for your response, AkatsukiPRO. This looks like the very principle of Shaolin Boxing, the softness of the wings of a butterfly but the firmness of a brick wall, looks like it has a lot of crane in it, most impressive. OSU!!!
@KARATEbyJesse After the two handed 'chudan nukite' strike, there is a technique often interpreted as a 'throw' to the front which is then immediately repeated to the rear before stepping through grasping and side kicking. I can't see the 'throw' to the rear. Is it just too fast, or is it absent?
@IEKUKATAKA Thank you for your interesting and thought provoking comments. I think you have misunderstood the context in which I use the word archaic. In this sense, I use the word synonymously with 'very ancient', and indeed lacking the worldwide popularity of the 4 most practiced sytles of Karate.
Pardon my ignorance if you please I have a background in Tai-Chi & Wing Chun, what Karate system is that kata from???? That is GORGEOUS!!! OSU!!!! As have said in other comments I do not criticize other arts just because I do not practice them, all martail arts are good and if taught & imparted correctly, let,s face it, if it were "no good" it would never have lased this long and we would,nt have the priveledge of seeing such an awesome kata, which system is it from???
Great kata - I watch it over and over again. I've always wanted to do this in tournament, but my Sensei doesn't allow me too because it's such a high grade kata. Comparing Sakumoto Sensei's kata to one's I have seen of Annan before, done by very young children, I can see why I am not allowed at the moment.
This Karate-Jutsu, being an amalgam of traditional Okinawan Tegumi, Crane, Monkey and Tiger Kung Fu, as well as arts from many other countries, if, (as I do), one subscribes to the eclectic Theory of the origin of Karate; is of course at significant variance with the generic Karate-do found in competition Karate all over the world. Personally, I am graded in both, and both have different, but nonetheless very valid benefits for life.
hi i am marcelo a shotokan practitioner for 27 years want to ask if it is possible to learn i mean allowed to swicth my style to shito ryu coz the time when i started karate their is no shito ryu in our state in philippines mindanao region or can i practice their kata instead.
I may well be mistaken, but it appears to me that Sensei Sakumoto omits a move here in Anan which is present in his 1988 performance. Is this correct Sensei Jesse?
anyone please help answer these questions for me, what brand of Karate is this? and what is the name of the form? I want to learn this particular Karate..
@roeylevy You just don't understand. Real Karate-Do isn't just about fighting. Sure, you'll get faster results with Boxing, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jujitsu, but Karate-Do offers more than just self-defense lessons. And believe me, the applications of kata do work, if you've trained with it correctly and your mind is sharp enough to apply techniques at the right moment. Karate has worked for me on several occasions so I know it does its job.
Actually, I cast no judgements or aspersions upon Ryuei Ryu, or indeed Anan Kata, (since I study both myself). No person whether Oriental or Occidental can understand any art or concept without study, and as an aside, I have been studying and training in martial arts for the last 36 years. I am of course a student of history, particularly the history of martial arts, and Karate in particular, hence the original post.
Kaicho Ricky Adams is a master of kata, kobudo, Ju-Jitsuand Iaido. He has taught the kata Anan and many others. His website is tkahome-com and his RUclips Channel is Mrluckyman007.
you're kata champion in belgium? wow. but you know a championship doesn't mean everything. why don't you put some of your champion katas on youtube for us to see? i'd love to see your amazing form.
if you prefer Sakumoto, fine. hes very proficient. but to criticize a great master like Kanazawa who has around 50 years of experience, just shows your understanding of kata is crap. personally i prefer kanazawa's kata in some ways over sakumoto's. how good are your kata? no room for improvement?
I'd be careful calling it Nahate. Keep in mind Chojun only called it Nahate cause his dojo was in Naha and he had to explain his style being different from the other okinawans. Ryuei ryu is a 3 generation Nakaima family style when the last one being Kenko. Tsugou Sakumoto succeeded Kenko. My master Terou Hayashi of Hayashi-ha Shitoryu was a student of Kenko Nakaima.

He was been World Champion in 1984, 1986 and 1988.
You should be grateful for this precious material, instead of criticizing the camera.
Ohhh !! Sukomoto Sensei is always so pleasing to watch. Just flawless.....
Awesome well performed kata.
man, now that's inspired kata. quite possibly the most beautifully performed form i've seen
That was so crisp and precise, wow. Martial arts is the WAY.
Thanks for sharing that Jessie and Happy New years! It is hard to find Ryuei Ryu where I am but what I have seen if it is beautiful.

I'm from ishinru, and learning this kata - im sooo interested by the way the movements of this kata form into strikes its so different but so similar

Nice❤
@KARATEbyJesse - thank you so much for posting so many fantastic videos, and provoking such interesting debate. :)

He puts so much meaning into every move
So good!!!👍👍👍
Ah no wonder! The open hand techniques and the fluidity resemble the Goju style. I noticed that Seisan is a Kata they share as well?

I hope during the last 9 years you have progressed enough to complete in this kata!

Wow, talk bout living the kata…..this is a beautiful example of what ya years cod practice will do.
No-one can top Sakumoto Senseis Annan, it's the diamond standard
@KARATEbyJesse Oos. Thank you. :)
osssh sensai..what a powerful presentation
I wouldn't totally switch my style but i'd say it's okay to practice some of their kata for tournaments and stuff.
excelent! congratulations sensei!
i'm curious, what style does sakumoto sensei practice?
Also Ryuei-ryu was developed by the Nakaima Family.
What a power .....nice
I like how he moves his hands in circles at the beginning for some reason..........
I do not know this form but man, I love his palm strikes.
Great looking kata well executed, OSU
what karate style is this?
Ive been doing this Kata for years.
what style is this??

@EDZ7777 :(
Thanks for the answer, if you know any instructor in US that teaches this style, please let me know.
The techniques in this kata seem like a great way to end up with broken fingers...
Excelente
So smooth
Oh ok thank you. He's on my fairly long list of people who i eventually want to train with.
Is he currently teaching?
What a true master. OSS
Would undoubtedly NOT want to mess with this man

looks more like Goju, but over in the side bar it says "ryuei" ryu. ==>
It's not Shito-Ryu.
It's RYUEIRYU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
holy crap this guy is good
the childs laugh was perfect when he shouted anan XD
Funny thing is, some of the Ryuei-Ryu Katas look like Goju Katas. Very neat performance. OSU!
vinny cappello of course were all one our movements look different but also similar that's the beauity of (and why I love) karate
I am champion of my own country, can you say that?
If we can´t see the feet, we can´t see half of the Kata.
you're kata champion in belgium? wow. but you know a championship doesn't mean everything. why don't you put some of your champion katas on youtube for us to see? i'd love to see your amazing form.
when he put arms on his hips at 0:30 i thought he s gonna throw a hadouken but didnt.. :(
It would have been nice to see his whole body.
if you prefer Sakumoto, fine. hes very proficient. but to criticize a great master like Kanazawa who has around 50 years of experience, just shows your understanding of kata is crap. personally i prefer kanazawa's kata in some ways over sakumoto's. how good are your kata? no room for improvement?
yeah like thats gonna work in real life
absolutly: Goju and Ryuei are Nahaté karaté: Both from Naha...
