Enjoy your time in Chicago….
I did and I love them. I made my own wheels for less than $600 using vintage (used) 36 holes high flange Campagnolo Record track hubs laced with Sapim race spokes on NOS tubular Campagnolo Omega Delta rims in true NJS fashion, 4x rear and 3x front. The only downside is that I can't stop myself from smiling whenever I'm riding 😊
It was good meeting you yesterday. I'm glad you guys let me ride along even though I wasn't on a fixie. I have a friend who works at Velocity and made me a couple wheels too.
Thanks for uploading zach just to let you know I keep on rewatching all of your videos because your videos can ease my anxiety for a bit. Thanks for always uploading ❤
Going on a unique build makes for interesting times. I am making up a SS set of wheels with Paul hubs. I love being part of a community and when you ask for help people try as best they can. Nice build you have.
One thing jumped out to me in the rear wheel closeups. I've built wheels since the '70s, and the rule of thumb I learned is that the 'pulling' spokes go to the outside of the flange. The reason being that these are the more highly loaded, and this gives them a slightly wider angle to the rim (side to side). Maybe you or Andron have an answer to why yours aren't. I went out and took a look at the factory built wheels on my Kilo TT Pro, and they *are* laced pulling side out. So it doesn't seem to be a modern fashion thing.
Great dive on the wheels, it all lines up, proper-perfectly proper. I’m from Grand Rapids, Velocity employees, a handful of them, got me into proper bikes, singlespeed then fixed. The A23s🙌🏻and after 10 years in California I think Paul is my guy for a rear hub, wish the Word was made in 120mm.
Custom wheels are the cat's meow. Got a set of Miche track hubs, DT ss spokes, and vintage 32 hole Campy Velocity rims with glue on Continental sew-up tires. Congrat's on your new wheel set ... Spin Happy :)
Building custom wheelset is another level of being bike enthustiast. No matter what are your needs - better looking or better performence, or combination. No matter if you spent 1200$ or 300$. I have custom wheels in one of my bike and some OEM on the second one. Bike on custom wheelset behaves exactly as I want and need. The other one is also fine, rideable and provides satisfaction, but at the end of the season (central europe, we have winters) I will probably order some components and ask my local bikeshop to build them up.
I love that after 10 years you landed on Velocities. I run Velocities, with Bladed polished DT swiss w brass nipples and Paul Hubs and panaracers. This is my happiest set up (ahem..26 years later...). I dreamt of white industries hubs because oohhhhhh sooo. pretttty, BUT but, I didnt find that they RODE better than Pauls or Phils .Also. your set up looks super fucking hot so enjoy yourself youre brining a lot of fun, funny, and and information to the fixed and single speed community. Especially for most of us who doesnt have 10 grand and are just bored, your growth process is really cool to watch. Also, all my bikes are scuffed up from use, and really, clean is one thing but tens of thousands of miles later, its ok to have dings and scratches on your whips. So funny to me that you sometimes rip on someone having a brooks on a track bike but then seem to almost always be riding brooks. Please clear that up for us lolol. Take care man, Keep up the good work.
Just started wheel building at home. Two sets in. My first set were Deep Vs (velocity garage sale) with no name hubs and sapim spokes, just to be sure I could do it. I went all out with my second set, Phils, H+Son (Formation/SL42) DT Swiss double butted spokes. A pretty standard normie “I have more money than sense” ultimate wheel build, to be sure, but I also lack the class and sophistication to pull off that Jacket.
Sorry if I missed it in the video, but is there a cost breakdown? I got a set of A23s fully built with Formula hubs from Velomine for something like $210 + shipping back in 2020. Did prices go up like crazy on the rims, or are the fancy hubs and spokes actually that much more expensive?
Splined cog reminds me of the classic coaster or 3 speed hubs ( but with many more splines) threaded lock ring is better though than the old sprung lock rings
Favourite wheels so far, dura ace 36h four cross laced with sapim double butted spokes to h plus son TB14. Custom AF and make me smile every time I ride. Not entirely sure how much they cost but great wheels. Custom is the way to go with fixed gears.
Internal width of A23 is enough for his tires, so probably purely esthetic decision. 15gr lighter per wheel, too (or not, depending on how worn molds are).
What's the deal with brass nuts? Sure they aren't used because of color, maybe softer brass nuts are supposed to not ruin threads on axle if over tensioned? Nuts are easier to replace than axle, cheaper too (especially with boutique hubs).
Custom building high end super wheels? Probably not for most people. Custom building wheels with 'normal' components? They will be nice and evenly tensioned! But then you could just buy a set of wabi wheels and call it a day I built my first set of wheels for a friend a while back and just today the purple rims came in for another friend's future wheelset
Hi, great videos thanks for all the info, I have a question about the tires. If I’m not going to use my bike for a few days to a week 😩 should I take the air out every time? Thank you 😊
It's not the custom built, expensive wheelset that makes the difference, but the relationship mid to light wheelset / ultralight steel frame which gives the bike a lively, springy feeling. You can put a medium light wheelset (around 2300 g) on a light frameset, complete it with decent components at a weight around 9 to 9,5 kg and you'll get exactly the same. Try out a medium light frameset with ultralight wheels and you'll know what I'm talking about.
Just build a fixie month ago with 3.6 gear ratio and it aint that bad tbh even tho most of them are chinese part especially the integrated stem drop bar from toseek
Dia-compe pro’s, H plus son TB14 black 36 (got to be 36) hole rims, hoshi single butted spokes, shimano plastic rim tape, Panaracer Race A tyres and R Air inner tubes…..yep, NO tubeless, I’m mean why and wtf……
I love how absurdly and wonderfully complicated this kind of retro tech is. 66 individual parts (not counting the individual mechanics of the hub) all arranged in delicate tension balance, just to replicate the simplicity of a disc wheel that's one peice and will never go out of true or degrade.
It is in no way replicating the simplicity of a disc wheel. It is also not retro. It is physics. Mass and energy are exchangeable components. As fundamentally they are the same thing. By adding tension to a spoked wheel you are storing kinetic energy in a closed system. In doing so you’re able to achieve substantially more strength than just the materials alone possess. To achieve an equally strong wheel using mass alone and no stored energy, you would have to make a substantially heavier wheel. It’s why disc wheels and aero spoke wheels are heavy as shit, even when made from carbon fiber. The irony being, well made carbon fiber wheels will also possess stored energy, applied to the wheel when molded and formed under intense pressures and heat. But nothing holds stored kinetic energy as predictably, as controllably, and as precisely as a steel wire.
Everytime Zach gets anything "This is the best anything I've ever riddennna!" I knew if i kept my Home pride AUSTRALIAN MADE velocity rims they'd be cool again . I built my first set of wheels this month. 650b for my tracklocross build.
Sounds sick. Really want to try a 650b on fixed!

Zach I got a stuck cog off my dura ace wheel with very careful application of a torch to the cog. It came off easy after.
Zach, Are you getting the Wabi frame with chrome lugs?
Zach, I thought this video was gonna be about if I should, with my own hands, build my own wheels. You should do a video on DIY wheel building.
Agree agree agree! ❤ I built my wheels (myself). Not top quality but it's the journey right?

Those copper colored spokes are downright gorgeous wow

why did you do velocity a23 instead of velocity quill?
Internal width of A23 is enough for his tires, so probably purely esthetic decision. 15gr lighter per wheel, too (or not, depending on how worn molds are).
Also, Zach told he liked lower profile A23's better than higher profile h+sons, quill is as high as archetype
Oh the Special, I'm broke with the news lol, hope they still have these by early spring next year.
What's the deal with brass nuts? Sure they aren't used because of color, maybe softer brass nuts are supposed to not ruin threads on axle if over tensioned? Nuts are easier to replace than axle, cheaper too (especially with boutique hubs).

I rode a road bike but also have a custom set of wheels with A23s and White Industries hubs... Perfection
Now you need a new purple Wabi with chrome lugs!!
Hi, great videos thanks for all the info, I have a question about the tires. If I’m not going to use my bike for a few days to a week 😩 should I take the air out every time? Thank you 😊
I just built up my conversion fixed gear 2 weeks ago and already, I'm obsessing about details. I guess I'm becoming a fixie rider.
I have archetypes laced to phillwoods also built by Andron! Velotrap is the best bike shop in Sacramento!

Silver polished rims are to sell bikes. They look dope in mounted wheels but are PITA to look after. Know this from Kinlin xr300's
I have those spokes on a non fixie...bought more to put on a fixie 😅
Just build a fixie month ago with 3.6 gear ratio and it aint that bad tbh even tho most of them are chinese part especially the integrated stem drop bar from toseek
why do spokes look rusty?
I too have those spokes. I run em with silver nips. Truly swag.
I always end up having to find wheels steel hubs or have them built with steel hubs because I went through so many aluminum ones
Cool! How do they compare to Wabi's Sub-15 Wheels? Love the outfit, BTW. You're going to max out the fixie Points on that one. LOL
You had me at lugs, but now chrome lugs??!! 🤤
Zach! The build never finished. But enjoy the moment!
I have a carbon fiber tri-spoke and there is something that rattles inside, it's annoying as hell. I miss simple wheel sets, lol.
Try a six bolt setup. It’s soooooo good
Did I get the first Comment and nice another fixed gear video by Zach 🤘

That jacket though 🔥
Damn, those spokes do strike a unique look
I were surprised for how expensive h+s rim are. They are just an aluminum hoops. Lettering on rims isn't appealing to me, too.
How about an episode filmed while touring the Velocity USA factory?
ALWAYS WORTH IT
I hope those hub logos line up in the valve stem hole
Wait what happened to the baller purple chain ring!?!?
Zach got that drip
Track nuts.
Hey Zach, just wondered, It's gonna be rad to take a Darkwing Duck T-shirt and paint "reasonably" over the "let's get dangerous" slogan.
Zach has lauded suzue pro max in the past and with a breath, trashed them. Quite an about face you've done, Zach.
Was also suprised by that. Many videos he said they were his favorite, now all a sudden he hasn't had good luck with them?
Got to say those champagne spokes and gold 🔩 are super retro sexy! Got to have em!!
Bro has one of the best last names
Custom wheels totally worth it. Especially when you know no one else you know has them.
