    I built two amp stands using soft maple like this. It's harder than it look's especially for me not having a large enough planer or a sanding machine wide enough. Yours are great. Thanks for posting. I'm building 6 end grain shelves for my audio rack now. Thanks again.

    The grain showing on each small piece really looks great (well it does to me a woodworker anyway). Hate to see it chopped on (Haha). I always like seeing your twin boys in your videos and especially when they are helping their Dad! Them putting on the glue was probably enjoyable (like painting) for them. Thanks for sharing.

    Excellent job! Super surprised that the pores in the oak didn't pop out as much. Guess that is why you used the wax to seal it some. How do you like the rotex 150? Does it make life a ton easier for finishing cutting boards?

    • @mtmwood
      @mtmwood  10 лет назад +3

      European oak is less porous than American white and red oak. Rotex 150 is very good.

    Some people say you shouldn’t use Oak, what is your thought on this? I have some 100+ year old oak, great tight grain, I want to use on a cutting board, what do you think about using it? Thank you always enjoy your designs.

    Did you steam the end grain after sanding and then take back the raised grain? I didn't see it in the video, wondered if it had been edited out?

    Good thick board but oak splits easily on the end grain if this board is to be used for chopping shouldn't it have a deep horizontal spline around the perimeter?

    Excellent craftsmanship! I have seen several of the end grain videos now and enjoy them a lot. I understand the mineral oil portion, but what does the mineral oil and beeswax finish do?

    To all the people in the U.S. and Canada that are asking if a cutting board can be make from oak... Do not use red oak, it is too porous. White oak has tight grain on the sides and end grain. Boards made from both edge grain and end grain are very durable.

    • @mtmwood
      @mtmwood  3 года назад +1

      We use European oak. It is less porous than American oaks. I think it is the best wood for end grain cutting boards. Even better than maple or walnut.

      johnny wishbone I've never worked with the white oak, but I think it can be used. Very good characteristics with the exception of shrinkage. So use only kiln dried lumber.

    Great video of course! I have heard that you shouldn't use oak for end grain cutting boards because of the open grain structure. Have you had any issues with oak or customer complaints?

    • @mtmwood
      @mtmwood  5 лет назад

      European oak is more dense and less porous that American oaks. I think it the best wood for end grain cutting boards.

      The beeswax seals the grain leaving the board very resistant to liquids penetrating

  • @Norwegianwoodworker

    Hello.
    Is Oak a good choice?? A problem with oak is that when it's bare (no finish of any kind), the tannic acid reacts with iron and causes dark stains. It will stain the wood, the food, your hands and it doesn't come off easily.
    I know you use mineral oil to finish your boards. But have you had any feedback on this cuttting board?
    Best regards.
    T.Robertsen

    • @mtmwood
      @mtmwood  10 лет назад +1

      I think that European oak is the best choice for end grain cutting boards. Oil and beeswax make good protection. I sold several thousands oak boards, only positive feedback. My wife have all possible boards, but use mainly oak.:)

    HI, once again a nice video. Had you ever used Olivewood ? Is it good for endgrain cutting boards?

    • @mtmwood
      @mtmwood  10 лет назад

      No, it is a bad choice. Do not use edible oils for board treatment, such as sunflower, olive, etc., because over time they will become bitter and give this taste to foodstuff.

    • @grandmastergeorgez
      @grandmastergeorgez 10 лет назад

      Tell me about it! i am an Olivewood turner and i always have bitter taste in my mouth at my shop... I have even grown to like it ! ((( As for oiling up my creations i use mineral oil and beeswax to seal it if i can. Take care mate!
