I built two amp stands using soft maple like this. It's harder than it look's especially for me not having a large enough planer or a sanding machine wide enough. Yours are great. Thanks for posting. I'm building 6 end grain shelves for my audio rack now. Thanks again.
The grain showing on each small piece really looks great (well it does to me a woodworker anyway). Hate to see it chopped on (Haha). I always like seeing your twin boys in your videos and especially when they are helping their Dad! Them putting on the glue was probably enjoyable (like painting) for them. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent job! Super surprised that the pores in the oak didn't pop out as much. Guess that is why you used the wax to seal it some. How do you like the rotex 150? Does it make life a ton easier for finishing cutting boards?
Some people say you shouldn’t use Oak, what is your thought on this? I have some 100+ year old oak, great tight grain, I want to use on a cutting board, what do you think about using it? Thank you always enjoy your designs.
Good thick board but oak splits easily on the end grain if this board is to be used for chopping shouldn't it have a deep horizontal spline around the perimeter?
Excellent craftsmanship! I have seen several of the end grain videos now and enjoy them a lot. I understand the mineral oil portion, but what does the mineral oil and beeswax finish do?
hi again....would you mind sharing with me where you buy your rubber feet for your boards? I am having trouble finding them in bulk....and also could you share the size of them.....thank you so much I love you videos....
To all the people in the U.S. and Canada that are asking if a cutting board can be make from oak... Do not use red oak, it is too porous. White oak has tight grain on the sides and end grain. Boards made from both edge grain and end grain are very durable.
johnny wishbone I've never worked with the white oak, but I think it can be used. Very good characteristics with the exception of shrinkage. So use only kiln dried lumber.
Our oak is just fine.I've had a white oak end grain board for over a year now. Just requires increased conditioner in the beginning to get a good seal.
Great video of course! I have heard that you shouldn't use oak for end grain cutting boards because of the open grain structure. Have you had any issues with oak or customer complaints?
Hello. Is Oak a good choice?? A problem with oak is that when it's bare (no finish of any kind), the tannic acid reacts with iron and causes dark stains. It will stain the wood, the food, your hands and it doesn't come off easily. I know you use mineral oil to finish your boards. But have you had any feedback on this cuttting board? Best regards. T.Robertsen
I think that European oak is the best choice for end grain cutting boards. Oil and beeswax make good protection. I sold several thousands oak boards, only positive feedback. My wife have all possible boards, but use mainly oak.:)
mtmwood Ok. Thanks for the feedback. I have a lot !! of thick long oak boards that I cut down 4-5 years ago. A short trip in the kill'n and I will make some christmas presents. : ) Have a nice day.
No, it is a bad choice. Do not use edible oils for board treatment, such as sunflower, olive, etc., because over time they will become bitter and give this taste to foodstuff.
Tell me about it! i am an Olivewood turner and i always have bitter taste in my mouth at my shop... I have even grown to like it ! ((( As for oiling up my creations i use mineral oil and beeswax to seal it if i can. Take care mate!
whitewolf8758 No. This board was made by order. The customer may choose all dimensions and some options. I have simple board designer at my site - mtmwood.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=20_95&product_id=676

Thanks for watching!
Woww.... The best part was the two cuties applying adhesive. :)

I like oak end grain. Especially medullary rays.
You have it down to a fine art.
That's one BIG cutting board! Great work as usual.
Thanks
Beautiful boards, what is the wax mixture you heat up at the end?
Great job! I would be interesting to weigh the board after the finish had been applied to how much it took on board.
That's a good idea this is something I'm going to try
Once again love watching your videos! Great Board!
Chris
Thanks!
Excellent job! Super surprised that the pores in the oak didn't pop out as much. Guess that is why you used the wax to seal it some. How do you like the rotex 150? Does it make life a ton easier for finishing cutting boards?
European oak is less porous than American white and red oak. Rotex 150 is very good.
Some people say you shouldn’t use Oak, what is your thought on this? I have some 100+ year old oak, great tight grain, I want to use on a cutting board, what do you think about using it? Thank you always enjoy your designs.
Did you steam the end grain after sanding and then take back the raised grain? I didn't see it in the video, wondered if it had been edited out?
belíssima tábua meu amigo ficou top parabéns
With what do You impregnate them?
And for how long do You have in the oil?
Good thick board but oak splits easily on the end grain if this board is to be used for chopping shouldn't it have a deep horizontal spline around the perimeter?
Excellent craftsmanship! I have seen several of the end grain videos now and enjoy them a lot. I understand the mineral oil portion, but what does the mineral oil and beeswax finish do?
It is just more durable natural finishing.
hi. i eo love your work...outstanding craftsmanship. got a question: what are the measuremnts ofthe sawed pieces?
What do you mean?
Superb :) What kind of oil are you using?
Mineral.
hi again....would you mind sharing with me where you buy your rubber feet for your boards? I am having trouble finding them in bulk....and also could you share the size of them.....thank you so much I love you videos....
David Ross We buy them in China.
The size - mtmwood.com/en/?route=product/product&path=20_90&product_id=661

Супер! а воск обычный ли какой то хитрый?
Нет, обычный пчелиный воск.

We use European oak. It is less porous than American oaks. I think it is the best wood for end grain cutting boards. Even better than maple or walnut.
K thanks, love your work!
Now that's a chopping block, nice
+Joe Bucci Thanks! It was simple project.
why are American oaks not good?? I have some rough cut white and red oak i was thinking of using to make a board.?
They are more porous than European oak.
could i use white oak safely, just need to seal it more often??
johnny wishbone I've never worked with the white oak, but I think it can be used. Very good characteristics with the exception of shrinkage. So use only kiln dried lumber.
Our oak is just fine.I've had a white oak end grain board for over a year now. Just requires increased conditioner in the beginning to get a good seal.
What is the sliding tray on the table saw? I need one!
This is SC-30 table saw, Griggio, Italy
Great video of course! I have heard that you shouldn't use oak for end grain cutting boards because of the open grain structure. Have you had any issues with oak or customer complaints?
European oak is more dense and less porous that American oaks. I think it the best wood for end grain cutting boards.
Thank you for the reply. Can I still use American red oak? Does it impact the look more so than the function?
@@thehusband12 Yes, of course. The pore size of any wood is incomparably larger than the size of the bacterium
The beeswax seals the grain leaving the board very resistant to liquids penetrating

Yes, the moisture content should no more than 6%.
HI, once again a nice video. Had you ever used Olivewood ? Is it good for endgrain cutting boards?

grandmastergeorgez I like Olive wood, but it is crazy expensive in Russia.
Its crazy expensive everywhere... wet here is at 150 euro per cubic and kiln dry to 20% is 1500 euro.....
grandmastergeorgez Too expensive for cutting boards. I bye kiln dry to 8% oak for 500 euro per cubic meter.
What wax do you use for the final coat?
Beeswax
what size is the first rip cut? 2"
thanks great video!!!
No. 37 mm.
What do you melt the wax in? It looks kind of like a rice cooker.
Yes, it is fryer. :)
I love the look of oak, but be careful planing end grain bc it's very risky running it through the machine. Better to belt sand it.
I do this everyday during ten years - ruclips.net/video/QJ2LSj4RhAs/видео.html

Я из РТ, Альметьевск
Это - американский твердый клен. У нас такой не растет. Наш, конечно, подойдет. Он помягче и сильно темнеет после масла.
Спасибо
Now that's a cutting board!! Woooo!!! I love it!! How much do you sell these boards for?! Good job!!
Thanks. It is about 150 USD.
mtmwood do you by chance have a site on ebay to sell these?

European oak
Like ure new music too!
RUclips added new music. :)
I was under the impression you couldn’t use oak for a cutting board because it is an open pore wood? Any truth to that?
European oak is less porous than American oaks. It is the best wood for end grain cutting boards.
mtmwood ahhhhh thanks. Very interesting 👍🏼
Great video if watched without sound. The music selected will make you wanna cut your self. Avoid hearing it if possible.
was it bees wax????
Yes.
What is the life expectancy of a saw-blade cutting in oak?
Frank
Long enough. I don't know exactly.
Красотища!
Oak isn’t generally recommended for cutting boards because of its large open grain. Doesn’t seem like a good idea because of bacteria.
Oak is the best wood for end grain cutting boards.
As for bacteria - mtmwood.com/index.php?route=information/information&information_id=10
а кто покупает такие доски по 11 кг? это же не в квартиру?

Can you make any money out of this sort of thing? The effort and materials vs what people will pay.
You will not become rich making cutting boards.:)
Well i gather that.. but i meant even recoup costs
It is a profitable business. Some boards are very expensive (up to $600), also I sell plans - mtmwood.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=92
