"Suspicious Minds" is a song written by American songwriter Mark James. After James' recording failed commercially, the song was handed to Elvis Presley by producer Chips Moman, becoming a number one song in 1969, and one of the most notable hits of Presley's career. "Suspicious Minds" was widely regarded as the single that returned Presley's career success, following his '68 Comeback Special. It was his seventeenth and last number-one single in the United States. Rolling Stone later ranked it No. 91 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Session guitarist Reggie Young played on both the James and Presley versions.
The song is about a mistrusting and dysfunctional relationship, and the need of the characters to overcome their issues in order to maintain it. Written in 1968 by Mark James, who was also co-writer of "Always on My Mind" (which Presley would later record), the song first was recorded and released by James on Scepter Records in 1968. Chips Moman had asked James to come to Memphis to write songs for American Sound Studio. At the time, James was residing in Houston. James had written three songs that became number one hits in the Southern United States. American Sound Studio was gaining a reputation in the industry as the Box Tops had just recorded "The Letter" there so James relocated to Memphis. James said that late one night, he was fooling around on his Fender guitar and using his Hammond organ pedals for a bass line and came up with what he thought was a catchy melody. James at the time was married to his first wife, but still had feelings for his childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston. James's wife has suspicions of his feelings. James felt it was a confusing time for him and that all three were caught in this trap that they could not walk out of. At the recording session, James sang the lead vocals, and the studio band backed him with Momam producing. The horns, strings and vocals of the Holladay Sisters were later overdubbed. After the tape was mixed, James and Chips flew to New York, where James's manager had contacts with Scepter Records. The label loved the song and put it out, but Scepter did not have the money to promote new artists, and the song did not make the charts. Later that year, Don Cruise, Moman's partner, told James that Elvis had booked their studio to record what would become the From Elvis in Memphis album. Cruise kept asking James if he had any songs that would be right for Elvis. James felt Elvis needed a mature rock 'n' roll song to bring him back as Tom Jones was a hot artist at the time. Cruise and James thought of "Suspicious Minds" and James began urging others to get Elvis to hear it. Even though James's recording initially had not been commercially successful, upon reviewing the song Elvis decided he could turn it into a hit.

Thank you all for your thoughts and reactions. The track Suspicious Minds was recorded live by me, Rick Bonner at one of my gigs in Rustington, West Sussex, in The United Kingdom. The quality of my initial video was quite poor, so I thought it would be fun to make a video with some of the people that are critically acclaimed as the best Elvis impersonators globally. A couple were for fun but they include:
    Cody Slaughter
    Donny Edwards
    Nick Nicolas
    India's Elvis
    Elvis Presley.
I am a huge Elvis fan and truly believe that there will never be another performer THAT good. I am honoured that there is still so much interest in the best entertainer that ever lived. Thank you. Rick

The idea behind the elvis tribute artists comes from the question: who wouldn't want to be The King?
Sure there can be a lot of pretty good impersonators, but no one can replace the real deal 100%.

Well said and I totally agree. Elvis was unique and can never be copied or replaced.

Elvis Presley lives again in England's Ben Portsmouth. This guy dosnt come close. Before Ben there was a guy who billed himself as The Big E. -Larry Seth. Rick Saucedo was great in Elvis The Legend Lives - Play that ran on Broadway.

Wow, if that's you at 2:35 you are indeed the World's best Elvis...look a-like. However, maybe try Britain's Got Talent or send a sample to SImon Cowell. You never know. The next big artist is out there...somewhere! Is it you? Is it me ? I don't know , but we should never give up dreaming.

Looks a lot like Elvis, but the voice (while on key and pretty good) is not even close to sounding ANYTHING like Elvis Presley. But hey, It's a tribute, so...

Some are very close on looks while some are close on voice but still no "cigar". However, it's great to hear and see Elvis impersonators.

I didnt conciously try to sing Suspicious like Elvis although it's hard not to sing some of the phrasing the same way. The 'Best Elvis Impersonator' is more reflective.of the established Elvis impersonators in the video.

His voice is not consistent but some tones sound like young Elvis and then a few sound like older. Also his voice is not as deep as Elvis's but a few octaves up. Furthermore Elvis was a "Southern boy" and his pronounciations are far from this guy..so the best? Nah..

  • @stephenyount3148
    @stephenyount3148 8 лет назад +1

You're halfway decent singer but I don't know how you believe your voice is even remotely close to that of Elvis. Might want to work on a Tom Jones imitation.

If pama42 I think it was was agreeing that Shaun Klush was not that great..I agree..does not sound much like Elvis. I have seen and heard him and it was ok and an enjoyable time but not over the moon.
