Well, the algorithms seem to be working because your videos pop up in my feed on a regular basis. You are a much-needed source of knowledge and information that most guitar players don't have the time or money to research on our own!
I love your content Robert, thanks for it brother! You're one of the most honest, straightforward people on RUclips. You sound like me calling people dumbasses and dipshits.😂 Keep it coming!
I use a very old quart can of Tung Oil my Grandpop gave me which has a price of 84 cents on it. I use it for Rosewood and Ebony fretwoods. Just smear some on the frets, work and rub it till warm and into the wood with your thumb and wipe off completely with a clean dry cloth. My Maple fret guitars are in good shape and coated with clear lacquer, so, I just rub them clean with Sewing Machine oil.
What I like about your channel the most (and I've been a subscriber since... 2018 maybe?), is that I've learned I can really trust your opinion. I've bought a lot of gear over the years thanks to your videos and I've loved each one that I've purchased. You don't try to be someone you're not. You just be you, and that is a helpful RUclipsr who cares about creating content that helps other musicians. You aren't showing off or selling out to big manufacturers. Thank you Robert for you knowledge of gear. I always watch when I can!
Thanks for using my comment. I should add to it that a creator who DOES attack a channel is usually butt hurt because they aren't getting the same response that you're getting.
I have used so many things since when i was 13 n heard "you need to condition your fretboard" so put conditioner from the bathroom on it (it didnt cause any issues i just had to clean it up) i usually use f1 oil now or sometimes i mame a mix of beeswax n linseed on a brand new board kinda like a raw neck
We love the content! You really should do some gain stacking vids. What I would do is take two or three gain pedals and try to make them sound good together. If it can’t be done, no worries. We all learned something. I use a fuzz face(always on) into a TS9 for a mid hump stead boost into a Wampler Pantheon. I run this into any clean amp and it sounds really great. I use my volume on the guitar to control the signal and I have a very nice “clean” sound all the way to the amp is melting. Again, enjoy the channel. Don’t be afraid to stack. It’s glorious.
I have used Ernie Ball fingerboard wipes for years! I bought a large container of them from Musicians Friend years ago, and they’re still going strong. Robert, you seem like the kind of guy, when you sold guitars at Guitar Center-particularly if it was someone’s first guitar, you took the time to help the person get the guitar that was right for them, rather than just pushing whatever would make your commission check bigger. That is why I love your channel, and trust your reviews on gear! Timothy Brosnan
Helping a beginner buy his or her first guitar is just as much of a joy as selling the high-end stuff. If you do your job and get the customer what they need and not focus on anything else, the commissions will come on their own. That’s how I’ve been able to make a pretty good living selling gear for all of these years now.
I do enjoy your channel and do my part. For a fellow Hoosier keep flying the best budget guitar gear at the end of the day most of these companies are just copying each other and jockeying for advertising.
might sound dumb to others but i use engine oil and shoe polish in a mix, rub that in with the wife's toothbrush, then wipe off/rub in when it soaked in smells great and works as far as i can tell
Most maple fretboards have finish applied so no oil is necessary. Rosewood and ebony are not finished so they need some oil once in a while to avoid shrinkage and fret sprout (sharp fret edges).
Over the last few years unfinished maple boards have become more common But agree, finished ones don’t need oil But I still would wipe it down and clean it periodically like any gloss finish, as gunk can build up
The Mighty Mite Maple replacement necks (Fender approved) are unfinished (at least the one's that I've purchased) and I prefer them over the Fender originals. I got a Fender Telecaster Player through my "Cool Points" from my job and the finish on the neck is horrendous. I bought a Fender Strat Burst body and added a Mighty Mite neck for it and I'd rather have an unfinished maple board and just clean and condition it occasionally.
Also, when I purchased my first Ibanez RG560 back in 1992, Linseed oil was recommended for dressing the Rosewood fingerboard. It worked great. Now, everyone recommends Lemon oil so. I switched. I don't know if one is better than the other but, Lemon oil works great as well.
I had the problem that the ortega lemon oil i used made my frets scatchy...😢 Happend when i whiped off the oil i think... Anyone with a similar issue...?
I bought a bottle of lemon oil at Walmart 20 years ago and it will last the rest of my life. I condition fret boards once, sometimes twice a year I live in Tennessee where we have plenty of humidity most of the time. We had a few weeks of dry cold winter weather and I experienced fret sprout for the first time. Then we got several days of rain and all three Ibanez guitars’s necks went out of wack; buzzing on all three, so have been tweaking to get them setup again. Weird! Is that what it’s like to live where it gets cold all the time, or out in the desert?
I scrap the fingerboard with a fresh razor blade if it needs it then I use Ernie Ball conditioner and once a year wipe it down let it work for a few minutes then wipe it off and buff it with a dry cloth. I e never used lemon oil no reason just don't do it
Robert, do you know of any good way to remove small scratches from the finish on a guitar? Is re-painting / re-finishing the only real option for this?
Don't the maple ones have plastic lacquer on them? I've never done anything with my maple tele fret board. I do dab a little olive oil on the rosewood boards when I take the strings off. For whatever reason, the oil on my hands isn't very hard on strings so I don't do it much (plus I have too many guitars). I do need to clean them good though. One thing I do that's probably unhealthy is use baby powder on my hand when I play. I do that with pool sticks too. What I lack in acidity of whatever kills the strings, I make up for in sticking to the treated wood finishes. dB is a exponential unit. When applied to electrical power (watts) 3 dB doubles the power as the example stated 50W to 100W (pretty sure they're measuring to input power to run the amp). 3dB would do the same if it's being measured to the power sound imparted on your ear drum. 3dB of electrical power is not necessarily equal to 3dB of sonic power though. The fact that sound is often measured in dB is probably the cause of the confusion. That's a different thing being measured than the electrical dB increase between amps.
Yea man 10 watt and 106 db speaker louder than 100w 86db. Speaker. The trick aint loud. Its cabs like about 8 to each 100w head its gonna sound way better
@RobertWJackson I'll add this as well, when you said guitar companies are making guitars so fast that the wood isn't dried properly and is subject to drying out, that is why solar guitars fretboards seem to crack so frequently, the turn around time for guitars for them are very fast. I've seen multiple threads on fb and RUclips of people complaining about thier fretboard ls being cracked...in the comment sections the number 1 question asked is "did you oil your fretboard"...guess what none of them did...absolutely NONE ! If that is proof for anyone
@@RobertWJacksonI think he’s scientifically correct, since hydration implies water, and oil is hydrophobic. Wood is porous though and will absorb liquid, like oil, which will prevent the wood from contracting in dry conditions Nerd alert! 🚨
Maple syrup for maple boards, of course!

We used to use baby oil back in the day. Still got the Les Paul. No problems.
Maple fretboards are normally lacquered so don't need any oil. Unless they have not been lacker.
Ha ha ha ha Robert he got you to say moist.....I had fun watching this one. Have a great weekend.
I been isolated before covid. this I like to hear about
Sweat, pain, and blood are the best fret-board conditioners. 🤘🏻😂

For conditioning my fretboard, I use L’Oreal. Silky smooth and smells great.
Boiled linseed oil. Apply it with disposable shop paper towels. Then burn them in the fire pit when I’m done, so I don’t burn the house down. Lol
used motor oil darkens ! get it off quick ! real quick ! apply it very very light !
I use this stuff called Guitar Honey and it works nicely.

It would seem that many owners of rosewood fretboards are unaware that you can buy rosewood oil for next to nothing...
One of my favorites
Robert, good in future endeavors. You should do a weekly hang and maybe a few quests to talk about guitar stuff. Thanks, Mike.

Any type of organic oil will eventually go rancid and smell bad.
