People can have different aesthetic preferences and opinions for reasons other than ignorance. Knowing what actual strongmen look like and liking that look are two entirely different matters.

Reality is a starting point for fictional designs, not the rule we're obliged to embrace. Personal aesthetic preferences always take precedence over reality if they conflict. Also, negative opinions are just as valid as positive ones. People can like or dislike whatever they want to like or dislike for whatever reason they feel that way. You're never going to educate people into unanimous agreement on everything and that's okay.

If there was any silver lining to the whole Wind Waker graphics thing is that they eventually made Twilight Princess. Both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are amazing Zelda titles.

It's one of the ones - that and Majora's Mask - I've not played yet. I can't wait for this to come out on the Switch. Skyward Sword was a bit of a disappointment so I'd like to have my faith restored.
There is good reason this one had controversy - after OoT and MM and then the tech demo on GameCube…..everyone expected something a lot less cartoony (myself included). I even went as far as not playing it on GameCube. But I finally got the HD version on my WiiU…..and wow was the game amazing! Was in wrong for dismissing it for n GameCube? Absolutely! But was it justified to dismiss it because we thought we’d be getting a different-style Zelda game from what we were currently used to? Absolutely.
I was not bothered by Wind Waker's art style. For "Young Link" games, they use that style....and for "Adult Link" games...they use a more realistic style. What bothered me was having to sail for 70%+ of the game and the extreme lack of dungeons. To me...that's what kinda put me off from finishing it. I was happy, when Twilight Princess came, they went back to the 9-dungeon formula......then they left that formula for good. Not a huge fan of Breath of the Wild due to the heavy emphasis of "survival" type of play along with gear durability. 😔😔😔
I though how swollen Aloy's face looked from the first one was the bigger question, unless she has recently been sting by mechanical bees. As for the peach fuzz, all I can say is that nobody really bothers with it in the first place, I mean would you willingly render every hair on a animal without being because you wanted to?
agreed the fuzz wasn't that big a issue though i can see why people might have issue with it partly cause from what i recall may have been a tad heavy personally i think some people are more sensitive to things like that given how their is a bit of a trend to make female characters on the less attractive side of things even if comparing to many real woman such as looking very masculine or much older then their stated age or overweight or similar issues especially if male characters in the same games tend to be what many would say is at least average looking at worst kinda shows a bias. plus i don't think many game or other fictional character should be realistic given its fiction its goes against the point of the medium to some degree especially in the more fictional ones like full on fantasy or sci-fi based stories like i also wouldn't be surprised if some of the people who dislike attractive video game characters wouldn't be against destroying some art like Greek statues given they represent what they see as unrealistic beauty standards so shouldn't be allowed to exist

Take Laura Croft for instance, it would be ridiculous for her to be overweight given the fact she has to outrun objects and perform agile tricks. Same goes for a Male character. When strength is involved, it makes no sense for your character look like he was made from a cheesestring. I dont feel Male characters are treated any differently than Female characters. Look at every male character out there. I gurantee you 99% of them are either a "pretty boy" or a ripped badass At the end of the day, it is art and art is supposed to be visually stimulating. Even environments are made to look visually stunning. People tend to not like ugly or bland levels either but those environments exist in real life.
I also love how people criticize Whimseyshire for being "completely out of place and against the tone" for a Diablo, while seemingly completely ignoring the Cow Level of previous games that they praise so highly in comparison which, I'm sorry, can't be taken any more seriously. Times gamers got a bait and switch on what the gameplay was supposed to be. I'm not talking about a game that had some removed features, like No Man's Sky, but when we expected to command great armies like installments before but instead was exposed to a simple mobile game with no real strategy in it whatsoever. For Forbidden West/Zero Dawn, I would argue that Aloy actually looks TOO good, considering she is a tribal, living rough in the wilds, and constantly fighting for her life. Her hair is too perfect to be realistic, she would likely have far less body fat, be sweaty/dirty much of the time, legs unshaved and her body scarred. (So that "fan" art of her with make-up is all the more ridiculous)
Also, for Spider-man, the Devs included an option, in Photomode, to add additional puddles to the background. Was brilliant on Insomniac's part. Can't wait for Spidey 2 AND Wolverine.
Sonicfox is a controversial figure in videogames, of course it’s inclusion is going to cause controversy. Why people don’t like it: -Furry -In his opening speech that he made when winning a prize, he went waaay to controversial to gamers. -Annoying to lot of people. I don’t even play skullgirls, but I can see why some people are pissed.

Ah thank you for mentioning Aloy here! The addition of peach fuzz was a fantastic example of how the character designs had been updated since HZD, much like the improvement of motion capture. It's not like they've reimagined the character or added something that wasn't there. They've simply upped the level of detail and it's great. We all remember HZD having an uncanny valley feel where the characters were concerned, and this was a fantastic step forward in a major area that a lot of fans felt was lacking. Plus Aloy isn't exactly following makeup tutorials or applying wax strips between cauldrons. It makes sense that natural hair growth would be present.😅

Ok it’s actually 6 months between games but still. If you look at DMC4 to DMC5 you can tell they switched art styles but all the characters still looked the same even with a five year gap in game. This was from a console gen and a half. HFW still has the same art style.

Wind wakers graphic controversy makes more sense if you lived through it. I was raised through the 90s and the graphics going into the 2000s were exciting. They were more realistic they weren't colorful they weren't cartoony they were gritty and more real and everyone was excited about it. So when Nintendo announced wind waker, honestly I was crazy excited no matter what it looked like, I understood more than most why people were upset. Even those that were upset didn't understand why.
How about the controversy over nudity in Mass Effect 1? That was so ridiculous and piddling that they had to make up a further controversy that you could mod the game to rape other characters.

I don't remember people complaining about Alloy having to much hair on her face, but more so people complaining she wasn't "dolled" up or "attractive" enough, with a look like she had access and time to put makeup on. The Wind Waker one makes a lot more sense when you remember that the system it was released on was widely considered to be the worst system of its generation. The Game Cube was not popular compared to the PS2 and X-Box, which were the first systems to really target teens and young adults with games like Halo and GTA 3. Past a certain age, it was kind of embarrassing to own a Game Cube and having one of its more mature franchises looking like a Saturday morning cartoon just compounded the issue. It didn't help that the last 3D Zelda game released before WW is easily the darkest game in the series, so even the hardcore fans felt like the series was heading off in a totally different direction. Of course, once you actually played the game it was more than good enough to win you over. And they have certainly aged beautifully. But it's hard to get over a bad first impression and those graphics were a bad first impression.

The only one of these I was really familiar with was the Windwaker one. I'll be honest. I was against the graphic style initially many years ago. Thinking on it now, the graphic style grew on me a bit. Despite never having played it, I can see how unique it looks.

I think the clothing controversy from mortal Kombat 11 is a good example. NRS decided that they were going to roll back on how scantily some of the women fighters dressed in the game, and it immediately started a Twitter out cry. You had the side of the angry dude Bros who were just constantly complaining about how all the developers wanted to do was please twitter, you had the women that were supporting the idea of making them dress normally, you had the women that were going all in on the opinion that mortal Kombat has and always will be sexualized and complaining about the change, and then you had the group that was of the idea that if they were going to roll back on how women dressed then they should buy proxy eliminate all of the shirtless costumes that the male fighters went in with. All of this, and not very much complaining about all the ptsdv game developers went through having to program all this super animated Gore which is depicted in fairly realistic fashion.
People dont seem to understand that visuals are what draw people to the game. If you take a game's main character and visually change them to be overweight and look homeless, It would not sell as well. You are right, most games design their characters to be visually appealing. Men are shirtless or showing off a 6 pack and\or ripped and either have a perfect looking face or rugged badass look. Not only are they sexualized but even men find them visually appealing to play as because to us they look "cool" Even art styles play a role. I could not play Windwaker. I did not like the artistic direction of the game. I played for a few minutes and shut it off. Even As Dusk Falls rubbed me the wrong way however I played through it. Still hate the art but the story and the way the story branched out was fantastic. Even GTA Andreas I did not like because of the environment. It was not appealing to play around the Slums, Vice City on the other hand had a beautiful setting and was one of my favourite GTA games. At the end of the day, we will always take visually appealing over realistic.

I never noticed the hair before, but her head looked wide and her skin looked like it has rosacea for *no* reason; that's my opinion and it hasn't changed, since the PS5 (a system that is less fun to play than its predecessor) has launched. It's not like Aloy was a sex symbol of videogaming to begin with, she just looked kind of young and not bad, a la Lara Croft (2013).

Take Laura Croft for instance, it would be ridiculous for her to be overweight given the fact she has to outrun objects and perform agile tricks. Same goes for a Male character. When strength is involved, it makes no sense for your character look like he was made from a cheesestring. I dont feel Male characters are treated any differently than Female characters. Look at every male character out there. I gurantee you 99% of them are either a "pretty boy" or a ripped badass
At the end of the day, it is art and art is supposed to be visually stimulating. Even environments are made to look visually stunning. People tend to not like ugly or bland levels either but those environments exist in real life.

For Forbidden West/Zero Dawn, I would argue that Aloy actually looks TOO good, considering she is a tribal, living rough in the wilds, and constantly fighting for her life. Her hair is too perfect to be realistic, she would likely have far less body fat, be sweaty/dirty much of the time, legs unshaved and her body scarred. (So that "fan" art of her with make-up is all the more ridiculous)

Ah thank you for mentioning Aloy here! The addition of peach fuzz was a fantastic example of how the character designs had been updated since HZD, much like the improvement of motion capture. It's not like they've reimagined the character or added something that wasn't there. They've simply upped the level of detail and it's great. We all remember HZD having an uncanny valley feel where the characters were concerned, and this was a fantastic step forward in a major area that a lot of fans felt was lacking. Plus Aloy isn't exactly following makeup tutorials or applying wax strips between cauldrons. It makes sense that natural hair growth would be present.😅

Look at Aloy between games and tell me they didn’t add more face to Aloy’s face. The hair doesn’t bother me but in the span of a few days (from HDZ to HFW) someone gaining that much weight in just there face isn’t healthy.

Ok it’s actually 6 months between games but still. If you look at DMC4 to DMC5 you can tell they switched art styles but all the characters still looked the same even with a five year gap in game. This was from a console gen and a half. HFW still has the same art style.

I liked Wind Waker's graphics. I didn't like all the seemingly endless sailing to get places.
Wind wakers graphic controversy makes more sense if you lived through it. I was raised through the 90s and the graphics going into the 2000s were exciting. They were more realistic they weren't colorful they weren't cartoony they were gritty and more real and everyone was excited about it. So when Nintendo announced wind waker, honestly I was crazy excited no matter what it looked like, I understood more than most why people were upset. Even those that were upset didn't understand why.

I don't remember people complaining about Alloy having to much hair on her face, but more so people complaining she wasn't "dolled" up or "attractive" enough, with a look like she had access and time to put makeup on. Those same people wonder why there is a certain image that comes to mind when some people think of gamers.

The Wind Waker one makes a lot more sense when you remember that the system it was released on was widely considered to be the worst system of its generation. The Game Cube was not popular compared to the PS2 and X-Box, which were the first systems to really target teens and young adults with games like Halo and GTA 3. Past a certain age, it was kind of embarrassing to own a Game Cube and having one of its more mature franchises looking like a Saturday morning cartoon just compounded the issue. It didn't help that the last 3D Zelda game released before WW is easily the darkest game in the series, so even the hardcore fans felt like the series was heading off in a totally different direction.
Of course, once you actually played the game it was more than good enough to win you over. And they have certainly aged beautifully. But it's hard to get over a bad first impression and those graphics were a bad first impression.

The only one of these I was really familiar with was the Windwaker one. I'll be honest. I was against the graphic style initially many years ago. Thinking on it now, the graphic style grew on me a bit. Despite never having played it, I can see how unique it looks.

I think the clothing controversy from mortal Kombat 11 is a good example. NRS decided that they were going to roll back on how scantily some of the women fighters dressed in the game, and it immediately started a Twitter out cry. You had the side of the angry dude Bros who were just constantly complaining about how all the developers wanted to do was please twitter, you had the women that were supporting the idea of making them dress normally, you had the women that were going all in on the opinion that mortal Kombat has and always will be sexualized and complaining about the change, and then you had the group that was of the idea that if they were going to roll back on how women dressed then they should buy proxy eliminate all of the shirtless costumes that the male fighters went in with. All of this, and not very much complaining about all the ptsdv game developers went through having to program all this super animated Gore which is depicted in fairly realistic fashion.
People dont seem to understand that visuals are what draw people to the game. If you take a game's main character and visually change them to be overweight and look homeless, It would not sell as well. You are right, most games design their characters to be visually appealing. Men are shirtless or showing off a 6 pack and\or ripped and either have a perfect looking face or rugged badass look. Not only are they sexualized but even men find them visually appealing to play as because to us they look "cool"
Even art styles play a role. I could not play Windwaker. I did not like the artistic direction of the game. I played for a few minutes and shut it off. Even As Dusk Falls rubbed me the wrong way however I played through it. Still hate the art but the story and the way the story branched out was fantastic. Even GTA Andreas I did not like because of the environment. It was not appealing to play around the Slums, Vice City on the other hand had a beautiful setting and was one of my favourite GTA games.
At the end of the day, we will always take visually appealing over realistic.
Not sure if it's been done before but I'd like to see a list of Moba that had so much potential but were killed off before they could get realized (paragon for example)

I never noticed the hair before, but her head looked wide and her skin looked like it has rosacea for *no* reason; that's my opinion and it hasn't changed, since the PS5 (a system that is less fun to play than its predecessor) has launched.
It's not like Aloy was a sex symbol of videogaming to begin with, she just looked kind of young and not bad, a la Lara Croft (2013).
