In this video we will be talking about social structure and agency, we will look at how these two phenomena of agency and structure are deeply interdependent, with social structure emerging out of individuals giving over and combining their agency within organizations that both enable the individuals and constrain them. We will look at the different types of social structure and how they can be modeled in terms of the conditions under which the agents choose to join the organization.

This video synthesized everything I needed to know about the topic on social stratification. It is better than reading a book.

Nicely made video! I offer this to my Sociology students as an option for an assignment. They watch this and answer some related essay questions.

If you are interested in the elaboration of these thoughts, please check a book by Frederic Laloux "Reinventing Organizations". He goes on and makes model not 3 stepwise but 7 stepwise and gives examples of those organizations that don't fit into 3 levels modek and is on a new evolutionary step. Highly inspiring reading.

Ryan JP think about your house as a social construction. The house controls your movements. it does not know which room you will choose to walk in at a given time but it knows that you have like 4 options based on the framework options that the house allowed you to choose from. Options are: the kitchen; living room; bathroom; room 1; room 2.
Looking at the bigger picture in society; a police job is a social structure because they limit or control peoples choices and actions.
Looking at it even bigger is the whole political system controlling police roles, they control give choices for a policemans actions.
A social structure is any person, place, thing, or idea that govern peoples actions even when they do not realize it.

It was stated before in this series that closed systems lead to entropy, social dysfunction, and here you said it creates order.

To structure social order is to choose three trusted figureheads and delegate all knowledge to them. These three are impartial. Under each head are two arms that enforce their distributions and collections of knowledge. They have three bodies that knowledge is distributed to. They have different faces, you can't see the real them, the faces are symbolic. Under the three bodies are four classes, four ways to learn and process the knowledge. You do not give knowledge to those who will abuse power, those with self-will, those prideful, those partial, those with personal agendas. Their arms take all knowledge away from the unworthy and give it to them only, to distribute. Their legs direct their bodies. This is the surest way to maintain a social hierarchy, as opposed to a chaotic battle of wills.

Hobbes was full of shit. I've been studying Anthropology for years and humans would only be naturally in a state of war if there was resource scarcity, which wasn't often the case in prehistoric societies that hadn't had a chance to destroy local ecosystems. Now that might be the case but that's not how we are NATURALLY
