Not really, watch most reputable moto channel's reviews. This bikes have been riddled with tons of problems related to engine, software and design flaws. Don't get me wrong I really like this bike's overall design and capability but reliability has been an issue. Hopefully HD will fix the bugs soon because the Pan AM is a very cool bike.
It's a nice bike, don't get me wrong. But very expensive and not very handsome for my taste. And when I tested it, check engine light popped up and suddenly 150hp bike became 50hp.
That's unfortunate, cause in general I like what Harley is doing with the Pan America. To even make a big enduro and make it unmistakable a Harley too is actually a ballsy move. It's their first shot and they came close enough but I think the bike needs minimum a full generation until all is sorted out.
So, to preface this I'll note I've been racing motorcycles since 2005, riding in general for much longer. To date the PAS is the first bike I've owned with a QS, I briefly had one on my FZR400RRSP but it killed the ignition so that was a short time span. I'm used to clutchless up and down shifting without a QS. I've ridden a few modern bikes with OEM QS to compare against, the Ducati 929 Supersport's setup was amazing for example... I started on my PAS with no QS, standard technique for clutchless shifting works fine on it, no issues. After getting HD's QS added I had a steep learning curve, clutched and clutchless shifts were herky-jerky for a bit till I figured out what was going on. In my opinion the issue stems from HD going with springs that are too soft in the QS linkage. This has two effects, first it makes the shifter feel vague / mushy compared to the stock linkage. The other issue, it triggers WAY WAY too early, just resting a foot on the shifter, or not getting your foot out of the way after a shift causes the cutout to start early, and end late. In my case I tend to put my foot into position, with a slight preload in anticipation of shifts which, cuts the engine if I'm not careful. When I remember that detail, no preload, shift cleanly with authority, full shift and get the foot out of the way after, the system works well. I'm very tempted to find someone who can wind some custom stiffer springs for that linkage to see if my hunch is correct. I need to inspect the wiring, it's possible a Dynojet sensor could be adapted, and would be a good comparison for spring rate as well.
i would shit my pants while using this "QS" on the twisties. more like quick death if you're not careful-shifter; but credits where credits due, awesome job Schaaf
Interested in an update. A lot of riders with a 2023 or 2024 don't have the issues you're talking about here. And a few have noticed some dealers are installing them incorrectly with the linkage being not aligned correctly which causes issues. Adjusting the linkage resolved the problems. Also, Harley Davidson is constantly pushing updates for these bikes. I've gotten an update for mine just a few weeks after I bought it last month and it resolved a few issues I had.
After dealing with multiple aftermarket quickshifters trying to make my Z900 a perfect comfy commuter I quickly understood how difficult it actually is to have a QS that works in most situations. It got to the point that I now do both the sensor Quickshift but with also lifting off the throttle manually just to help it get into gear easier and smoother. Basically I keep the throttle on, lift the lever, and right as the engine gets cut off I let off just a fraction of a second as fast as I can, and get back on it. This is the only way that I have gotten any quickshifter to work everywhere, no matter the throttle position or rpm or gear. Edit: the puzzling thing about it tho is on paper it should just work because Im not doing anything that the quickshifter isnt already doing, cutting the engine to release pressure on the clutch, but for some reason at least my Z900 will sometimes get into the next gear… but not fully engaged? Basically it shifts, the dash says I shifted, the transmission definitely shifted as the rpms are a little lower, but the shift lever stays numb, unless I let off the throttle a bit, you can actually hear and feel the gears engage when it happens. Thats why I started doing the manual throttle lift mid quickshift, as it eliminates that weird non engaging shifting and the numb shift lever
I was happy, when the Panamerica appeared on the market. But after a testdrive I was very disappointed: No grunt from lower revs, not so great in the twisties and far too heavy. So I stayed by my V-Strom 650 XT: Great bike, low price, much fun!
As someone who has the SE quickshifter too, can confirm it is the worst factory one I have ever tested a bike with. I only use it for downshifting at this point.. upshifts are a clunky mess.
When HD first introduced fuel injection it was very primitive, any real performance upgrades required you to replace the entire ecm and fuel injectors. Just about every other manufacturer at that time just required the computer chip upgrade. However, I have the feeling that HD will not be so quick to upgrade the quick shifter setup. May have to wait until 2026 to see any real upgrades on the Pan America if HD decides to continue with the experiment. I mention 2026 because it is about a 5 years period that we see significant model improvements/changes.
HD really needs to work on that QS haha. The exhaust isn't bad, probably the best you're going to get that's Euro 5 compliant. I know it sounds MUCH better with an aftermarket exhaust
It looks to me like the sensor sesitivity is set too low (required pressure on lever to initiate QS is too high) and build up time is too long (time that you are appling force on the lever before QS software starts shift sequence). Such setup causes false neutrals when rider is little bit "lazy" with shifting or forced shifts prior actual engagement of QS in situations with limited load on gearbox. Tested on my Guzzi with Healtech QS 🙂
I wish I had seen this video before I just wasted $700 getting a quick shifter installed on my 2022 Harley-Davidson Pan America everything he said about the quick shifter is true. If you want to flush $700 down the toilet... Get one installed NOT.....
What's the problem? That QS is perfectly in line with the HD ethos: clunky, hilariously underperforming and overpriced. Even my 701 Supermoto QS has less false neutrals which is actually a great compliment to the Husky. :D
I delayed riding one of these for over a year and a half while they worked out some bugs and supply (mostly luggage and accessories) caught up. I was excited to see that they added the quickshifter for 2022+, but until they get that software bug figured out it is just a safety hazard. I finally got to ride a leftover 2022 Special and loved it, but I found a lot of what I had read/watched for the last year or so to be very true. I've had 5 Harley's and a handful of other types of bikes (sport bikes/cafe racers/nakeds/streetfighters) and really hoped this could bridge the gap for me and deliver on all my favorite riding styles, but I may need to hold off for a few more years until they truly have things sorted.
die fährt sich ja total agil! der quicky scheint top zu funktionieren, aber ist der quicky wirklich so schlecht? sound ist auch sehr geil 👍🏻😉🏍️💨 wo ist das genau wo du da fährst?
I did a decent test ride on a couple of these at show and I have this to say "The pan am is like a stew that has all the main ingredients, but not simmered long enough. The potatoes and carrots are a bit hard and lacks overall flavor. But hey "it's stew" right?"
If you have a bluetooth audio in your helmet, is the SE exhaust too loud? I want to put audio in my helmet, and get the SE exhaust, but not sure if one would negate the benefits of the other.
