GOLD Prospecting As young boy of about 7/8 years of age I discovered gold in the steep hard rocky mountain slopes in Maam Valley, Maumturk mountains and beside St Patrick's Holy well, this ancient place of pilgrimage, later a much older local shepherd man told me that it was fool’s gold but this little boy felt that I know better, Many years later it was discovered that there indeed real gold in them mountains but the local people did not want the mountain sides savaged and damaged or their beauty fully clean clear rivers waters poisoned where wild salmon entered from the Corrib and which I fished with my dear departed Uncle John Joe with his long handle gaff and me with a long hazel handle and burning paraffin rag to show the way along the rocky and slipper riverside on those bitter cold dark winter nights which were so cold that even the sheep dogs would not venture out into so they missed the greatest fun of illegal night fishing, dodging the local fish bailiff and those very fine men from the barracks An Garda Siochána
Not really free, you would need a pair of good wellingtons, a decent pair of long home knitted woolly socks with no holes in the toes of the heels, a long oilskin coat and match fisherman hat., I found as young lad that the very best time to go out gold prospecting was on a bitter cold winters rainy stormy day, go searching along the riverbed and when find that seam of gold, you would collect all that you could to fill your pockets and leave the rest undisturbed until some other bad cold wintry wet day. I hope that I have not given to many of my gold hunting secrets away
