Spent 4 years in Gunma especially Maebashi and Kiryu during my undergraduate study days 20 years ago. Nice place with great mountains and onsen. Loved the Tone river.
john i did ask my sensei about it, when i'm still learning how to drive in chuo driving school 12years ago in tochigi ken. he said that the reason why they prefer to park backwards is because your manuever to park is with stable obstacle so its much better to do it with less visual and when you exit there are possible moving obstacles like cars and pedestrians so you need better visual so thats why the car is always facing forward. which i totally agree with the logic.
I've been driving for the last 30 years or so with that very logic...and I live in Thailand. Also, as space is also quite precious here in Bangkok...parking spaces are quite tightly packed and you can easily be stuck in if you didn't back into the lot.
You have a beautiful family John Thank you for sharing all your travels around Japan it is a Beautiful Country ❤Safe Travels from Northern California, USA.
I lived in Gunma for 3 years about 25 years ago. Met my wife there and then moved back to. Canada. Looking forward to retiring over there. Minakami is a really beautiful area with hiking, onsen, etc.
In Gunma, you could do some onsen and rotenburo in a Ryokan ( Gunma Prefecture is full of Onsens!!!)... I try most of the time to park backwards because is more practical for me and allows me to easily leave, and thank you for giving me the location of an IKEA and the UNICLO shop to visit!
It's the same in Hokkaido, I would say a good 85-90% of cars back-in instead of front-in, it's actually quite a lot less awkward in most cases once you've gotten used to it.
In 2019, we flew in on my birthday and a cat 2 typhoon was going to come through Tokyo that night and everything closed early. When it went through Tokyo, I did not even know it was there due to the sound proofing of the hotel.
After working at a car dealership and having lots of practice backing in. Backing in makes most sense in most situations. It to me is easier than pulling forward, because backing in you have all your mirrors and a backup camera.
Agreed, one finds those Big Box stores in the most unexpected places in Japan. As we were pulling into Hiroshima station we saw a Costco near the baseball stadium. Before heading for the Peace Park we had to check out Costco in Japan. Two take-aways from the Food Court. Yes, the hot dog and soda combo are bargain priced, but the meat is pork rather than beef. Second, we had the unique to Japan Shrimp Burger. It was fantastic! As to purchased items, there was a box of bath salts from Onsens throughout Japan - boy was that heavy to bring back to the States in the luggage though, not to mention having to back pack it through the Peace Park. :)
By the way John, since watching youtubes about Japan I always backup parking or we called it reverse park. Make sense is safer when pulling out the car park. More visual of the surroundings. Even mum is doing the same.
My home town! I’m leaving Florida, US early in the morning and will be arriving to Maebashi in 24 hours! I’ve been to that Uniqlo last year lol looking forward to going to the new IKEA wonder if there are any specific Japanese items there. Always have fun at Japanese Costco too but of course my love as a Gunma origin, is CainzHome!
Hey John, I saw a special somewhere on the logic and reasoning of backing into parking spaces. As you know, space is tight in Japan. Parking "butt first" makes it safer bc you can see better versus backing out of the slot.
I’ve been to Japan 25+ times and was at lake Biwako the other day wondering the same thing about the parking. I believe it’s because the majority back in they all have to do the same. We also had tons of rain in Kyoto Tuesday which was a bummer for our last day.
Is Maebashi connected to Tokyo by train? Seems like it would be the best of both worlds having all that space living in the likes Gunma while still having easy access to the big city stuff of Tokyo.
It is, but I believe you have to change at Takasaki Station, home of the Daruma and Daruma bento 🍱 😋 it’s up route 17 from Ikebukuro. Just go straight. I’ve ridden my bicycle here twice before. It’s a nice ride when you get a little past Tokorozawa, Saitama.
American way is weird, pulling out while in reverse is less quicker, less easier, less safe. In my country we do it like the Japanese way, and it's not difficult if you've been taught how to do it since a very young driving-able age, in any kind of parking situation. No need to be afraid of bumping into someone/something/some runaway kid and get into a heated argument, or even a lawsuit, if you pull out from the spot head first. In the case of loading stuff into the trunk you can always move the car forward a bit but in most cases there will always be room
the weatherman's presence and especially his jacked is keeping me from being able to follow anything else. xD He is so badly dressed, not like in a bad way but like a 80's geek way. i love it.
Ha! Leo hit his head, cried a bit. Yeah - it’s a little dangerous, but he needs to take a few licks and learn. In the US, I don’t know if it would happen like that. The slide is very popular though, so many young parents came to play with kids here. Uniqlo knows the customer base in Maebashi.
@@onlyinjapanGO Excellent point. The width of the slide invites parents to accompany their small children. Tough to share a slide with a child in the U.S.
So I have never heard IKEA pronounced that way. Your pronunciation is the Swedish pronunciation. I learn something new every day while watching Only in Japan. I always pronounce it Eye-Key-Ya, but the correct Swedish pronunciation is Ee-Kay-ya. I love the suburbs. As for the parking, I disagree. I would say more Americans back in than going in heads first. At least in Arizona.
You can go to Uniqlo at Shinjuku Station, or here - thought many would be curious what outside of the usual tourist center. Better Uniqlos 😂 with local goods, nicer parking lots. Wide open space. Costco. And more … of course.
John I hope you'll join me for 1000 rock at the Ikaho Green Bokujo. it's beautiful and there's a petting zoo and 1000 people playing Mongol 800 songs at 2pm Saturday. I actually spent a week after the 2011 earthquake visiting a friend in Maebashi. They have a "ymca" with an onsen the size of a large community swimming pool. I have some great pictures of cars lined up for gas like it's the 1970s they gave my mom flashbacks :-)
Hey, I just gotta say blur the face of your child. It's not OK to put them at risk like that. They didn't consent to their face being all over the internet and have to deal with images of them being on the internet when they get older, please blur the face of your children who are minors. Japan is a safe country but there's also a ton of crimes against kids, as you know. Please blur minors' faces. We know they're cute kids but it makes me question the integrity of RUclipsrs when they just throw a baby's face online like that.

Biking along the Tone river is so chill.

Can’t believe you finally went to Maebashi. I went to Maebashi back in 2017.
How interesting about the parking, I never noticed! Must be such a cultural thing. Thanks for sharing. Hopefully the weather goes better soon.

Any plans to visit the brazil town in gunma? Thats on my list to visit in Japan

Cool! Thanks for sharing it. ✌️
Those glasses look great on you! Are they Matsuda?
I much enjoyed the sliding quality of your video show.
I think that’s … a compliment? 😂 hahaha! There was sliding in this video.

Digging the look! Looking sharp.
1st on a replay 👍 Stay safe with your family, John! Greetings from 🇵🇭
Nice place. I like shopping in Uni Qlo. Ikea👍🏻. Interesting to see what Costco Japan has to offer.
By the way John, since watching youtubes about Japan I always backup parking or we called it reverse park. Make sense is safer when pulling out the car park. More visual of the surroundings. Even mum is doing the same.
06:40 Backing in is a Hawaii thing too!
may I know the model of your glasses please?
Did you go to Takekashi? They park in backwards in Gunma? Why so many foreign box stores there? The great Yasuhiro Nakasone was Minamoto clan?
They park in backwards everywhere in Japan! 😂 it’s not a Gunma thing although they’re good at parking here.
I always Park bacwards, easier To go in, easier to go out🤷🏼♀️
My car was built in Gunma.
My home town! I’m leaving Florida, US early in the morning and will be arriving to Maebashi in 24 hours! Cainz Home ...I've forgotten that name.. Sekichu, too ...really bring back memories
I believe that Costco is right next to the Hiroshima Carp stadium? After visiting Hiroshima memorial we stop at Costco to do a quick shopping🍱
Gunma and its touges are legendary for all InitialD fans. I have to check out Myogi on next visit 😃

John, it's Ai Kee Ah, not Ih Ke Ah haha...
Is this the same gunma as mentioned in initial d anime. Plz drive through some mountain passes and that swan boat lake in mountains.
It’s the only Gunma I know!
Takumi Fujiwara area. Gunma prefecture plate no 13-954

Loved Gunma, stayed one night at Micasa :)
Gunma!! I remember Initial D 😊
I live in Tachikawa. We have a very nice IKEA also.
It is easier to back in to a parking space because the back is shorter than the front of the car
I hate parking backing in. Hey, summer is just starting..hopefully there's another camping trip in your future.
Not the farthest place from where I visited shibukawa this past April. Shinkansen tokyo to shibukawa
the weatherman's presence and especially his jacked is keeping me from being able to follow anything else. xD
He is so badly dressed, not like in a bad way but like a 80's geek way. i love it.
You'll never see a slide like that in the U.S. Someone will get hurt on purpose and sue the store.

I'm going there to see the Michaelsoft Binbows building lol
Most importantly: How does it compare to Columbus, Ohio? 😅

2 hours 45 mins by train and bus from shinjuku st. to uniqlo... so far John

Stay safe.

I park front first only if I will put a lot of stuff in the trunk.
You seen a panda trueno going downhill at midnight?
You're welcome to move to Maebashi :D you know you can buy a large house from 2000man
It’s a nice place! I used to live in Utsunomiya and liked it there, went to Maebashi to visit friends. 24 years ago 😂
1:14 You really can't escape that flag anywhere now, huh?
They just need to shove it in your face.

the auntie in me is very turned on by the store selections in this video
これで前橋にも外人観光客が殺到するのか??
Excessive caution, lol.
Have fun in IKEA John I like IKEA too hope you find something nice their
The Costco in Japan is 1000% superior to any in the US.
Singaporeans park their cars back in as well
Suburbia coming to japan
Someone knows about traffic
Parking like that is very Asian, and its safer
Lol johns english slowly getting worse and worse
It is! 😂 what’s wrong with me.
