- Reason Studios just released a new string modelling plugin called 'Friktion'. In this video, I use it for the first time to add some layers to a track and give my first impressions of what I like about this new rack extension. 🤔

Have to agree with David, best string modeler out there. I had to put it to the test and make a demo track last week. Loving it!
It's cool aye!
that fresh cut tho!
Lol yea was time for a change! 😅
I love Friktion, just wish it had a second half of the vst with knobs for more experimentation.
True. What kind of things do you want to mess with?
@@matthewstuartnz I'm not very wise when it comes to physical modeling, but as a musician I find the idea of something that sounds real and organic but completely new, appealing. I think maybe being able to make your own resonator and also having fine tune of what's going on in the background, would be a dream come true.
Lol I think that would just confuse me 😅 I wonder what would happen if you used a vocoder and combined it with a normal synth? That might be interesting 🤔
I hope this rack extension is included in the new version 12. It really is bad ass. And I have the stringwerk rack extension which is 🔥also. Friction is a great asset to the rack!
Yea, Friktion is cool! I'm sure they'll add it. I feel like this needs to be one of their flagship synths.
I bought it when it was on sale but have decided I'm not buying any new Reason Studios rack extensions, players, etc... until I see what happens with 12. I owned more than half of the now included pieces of 11 studio and wasn't thrilled that there was no upgrade path that reflected previous investment.
If you don’t buy another rack extension at least consider 1 more and get that delta midi computer. I got it on sale for Black Friday and hate that I didn’t get it sooner. It’s really the most versatile player there is. It’s 3rd party so it won’t be included in an upgrade. @@JeremiahTrue
Yea that wasn’t cool.. I was in the same boat 🤦🏼♂️
What does it do?
Awesome beat, even without the strings!
Thanks man! Glad to hear you like it!
Embarrassedly, now I understand when people say "Oh I like that gate". Because seriously I never understood what they were talking about. I probably tried exactly this but I always thought they're doing some sort of witchcraft with it! XD But then again, I am probably a manual guy, I prefer to do it with my hands while playing. But the mod matrix in Friktion could've at least been doubled because to make a living sound, I already fill the mod matrix up easily. Not saying that I don't like Friktion, it actually creates sounds I can connect to /which I can feel/translate.
Sorry man, I can't remember what you're referring to in the video 😅 an expandable mod matrix would be an awesome idea!
@@matthewstuartnz No worries! ;)
yeah man, nice head job. the hair dresser was mad cause of all the hair they had to sweep up. lol J/K you look good man. great video.
Lol thanks man! Yea it had been long for too long! 😅
Well, this got me to subscribe.
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Friktion is very interesting and I'm wondering how My tracks will sound if I replace the old way of doing strings with this. Looks like I can just copy My midi from the old strings sampler to friktion and then play and record the mod wheel input.
Yea, I'm pretty sure that would work! Friktion is cool man! I don't think it's necessarily the best sounding strings player out there but it's definitely solid. Playing the mod wheel gives you some really satisfying results too
@@matthewstuartnz Definitely worth experimenting with. I'll wait an see how reason 12 runs on others systems ie what computer is best for it and how the HD feature might effect cpu.
Yea man good call 👍🏻
@@matthewstuartnz Well I'm back to rewatch and turned out I hardly ever used Friktion and it did not replace My 3X NN19 Combinator I made for strings I nearly always use.
great video David ! and that track you made sounds super cool . really liked it . did you sample you own voice and import it in Friction ?
Yea I think pretty much every sound in that track other than the drums is my voice! 😅 don’t think I ran the samples through Friktion though 🤔
Glad to hear you liked it!
I always appreciate the work put into reviews/impressions so first off, thanks for your video. But I must say that if I was to judge the product by this, I'd be sorely disappointed. It's just that the patch you've chose to demo in a musical piece sounds more like a GM voice from a 90's box and the overdone tremolo emphasizes that. Having listened to almost every demo of Friktion on RUclips, I believe Friktion has a lot of expressive power, but when used as a more or less "static" voice, it suffers and sounds like every other subtractive or FM synth string patch. I hope you'll do a future workup on Friktion that shows off it's expressive capability and also doesn't drown it's voice in a mix. I mean no offense, just my opinion, and again thanks for contributing to the knowledge base.
My impression also: GREAT for articulation, rather MEH soundwise. But i am judging from youtube vids only so far.
@@photophob I own the SWAM libraries as well as AAS String Studio VS3. Friktion is nowhere near the realism of SWAM but it has much better bow articulation than String Studio. But overall if you can get past the horrible interface of String Studio it's got amazing patch potential and external expression control.
SWAM?
I agree with that. I think the articulation is the selling point for me.
Thanks for the comment, you've got some great points! I think I agree with what you have to say about the static voice.
JUST NAILED FRIKTION FOR 64 BUCKS!!! - HAPPY DAYS!! - SALES ARE ON!!!
