I think John Mills could possibly be the nicest man who ever lived! His fellow actors and friends simply gush over him and I myself think he is utterly fantastic. 'Dobson's Choice' being my favourite. 'The Truth about Spring' with daughter Hayley a close second. Love him to bits.
Love how clearly thrilled Maggie was for him... he wrote in his autobiography that he knew he'd won before she even said his name, just from the way she was smiling 😊
This is one of those moments that was magical for me. I saw Ryan's Daughter on a roadshow run, which is the way they did it in those days. It was reserved seats. I saw it at a matinee and at the time, was a big fan of Mitcum and loved Sarah Myles and John Mills. I spent the whole movie looking for John Mills. I was 13 when I saw this so I had to wait until the credits. All I knew is that I was outdone by the guy who played the mute. Then, to my shock, it was John Mills!!!! I'll never forget leaving the theatre thinking there's no way he doesn't win an Oscar for this, and he did.
@@angelabolton4478 Yes she was the epitome of British class and sophistication. Drop dead sexy as well. Love that movie. Magnificent cast and performances from all. Niven,Sellers,Guinness and Columbo doing his Bogart PD spin.
Darling Maggie. She presented the first award of the evening to Mills because she was appearing in DESIGN FOR LIVING at the Ahmanson Theater across the Music Center (That may be her costume she's wearing) and would be onstage when the Best Actor was presented. Hence it was devised that Maggie & Goldie would switch (no doubt consideration was given to ratings as Goldie was a big TV star at the time). Maggie later joined the party at the Governor's Ball.
Absolutely loved (Sir) John Mills - the quintessential English gentleman (not unlike David Niven). Such a stunningly beautiful film, very underrated and a much deserved Oscar win. Just fabulous 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧
John Mills for the win, yes, but it would've been wonderful had his co-star Trevor Howard also been nominated. "Ryan's Daughter" is a highly underrated film.
I Agee. Trevor Howard played a great Father Collins. Just that his role was more than a supporting role, imo. So Howard would probably have no shot against George C Scott in that category. But it would have been a well deserved nomination and interesting in the supporting role for Howard. John Mills probably would have still won. Cause, I think , it was Mills' crowning achievement. Great movie, very underrated.
He was great even in classic movies like "The October Man" which should then should have been recognized by the Oscars. Will watch Ryan's Daughter next.
I know he said he didn't expect it but you could see he was telling himself "It's now or never." Lean asked him if he had ever won an Oscar after filming a few scenes of him in Ryan's Daughter, he knew this would be the role that would get Mills the gold.
That was the quickest award given to an actor without all the hoopla that goes on now. On the award shows these days the actor thanks 50 people and by the time they are done, people are bored, I mean after all they didnt invent a cancer cure.......short sweet and to the point ....
One of only three times that someone won an Oscar for a role that they never spoke a single word in the film; the other instances were Jane Wyman for "Johnny Belinda" and Holly Hunter in "The Piano".

1971 Oscars (awarding 1970 released films, made in 1969) Played Pip in the original Great Expectations, father of Hayley and Juliet Mills. In Ryan's daughter he played the "village idiot", a mute role.
Ten years prior, his daughter Hayley won the special (and what turned out to be the last one awarded) Juvenile Oscar for her work in the 1960 film "Pollyanna". I am in the middle of her memoirs right now, and she wrote that when the special mini-Oscar arrived in the mail, absolutely no fuss was made of it, and her parents hid it away. Hayley wrote that with benefit of hindsight, she suspects her father may have been a bit hurt that his 14-year-old daughter received an Oscar before he had, but the topic - even the fact that she'd won an Oscar - never surfaced.

You have both got it wrong! It was called Hobson's Choice.

Hobson's Choice......
