    I just bought a fishing kayak, and am awaiting for it to arrive. After years of not being able to go fishing (long story…), I can't wait to get back to the water, but I have never been on a kayak before and did a lot of research before purchasing it. While looking for info on RUclips, I came across your excellent videos, and I think these are just perfect. So...I just wanted to say thanks, Chad, for these very well presented and informative lessons, and I will try my best to take what you've taught out on the lake with me.

    Hint: Use your legs. Push on the foot on the same side that you are pulling the paddle. This pushes the boat forwared. If you just your arms, you are pushing the kayak forward with your ASS. As the blade travels toward the stern, rotate your body (watching the blade, helps). This minimizes using your arm muscles, so you don't get tired so quickly. Been paddling 46 years. Took professional instruction my first two years, 3 one week courses, resulted in a life long enjoyment of kayaking.

    I really wish I had a little more self restraint. I had the idea of starting in a paddle kayak, to learn the fundamentals before going with a pedal kayak, but that kind of idea doesn't last long in my brain. The only time my paddle comes out, is when it's too shallow/weedy for the pedal drive, and it's obvious that my technique is lacking. Some day I'm sure I will leave the pedal drive at home, and just work on paddling. Unfortunately some day probably won't be here any time soon...

    If you are actually concerned about wind resistance enough to use a feathered paddle it seems you would use a boat that wouldn't have you sitting at treetop level.

    • @plotholedetective4166
      @plotholedetective4166 5 лет назад

      TridentDriver1987 first off nice name. now then, sit on top kayaks are designed for fishing thusly you need stability with a higher point of balance so you can stand as well as more access to space for gear and fish and stuff than just paddling around. the sit in kayaks tend to be more for rough water like sea kayaks or white water kayaks which are fun but pretty useless to someone who wants to go fishing. it just depends on what your doing with your kayak. if your just lake fishing and cruising inlets get a sit on top. if you want to shoot some rapids or catch some waves you should get a sit in.

Looking for ways to be more efficient on the water, as well as getting on and off the water.

    I wish I had seen this before I ordered my paddle. On the advise of 2 different "experts, I ordered a 250cm paddle. So, I guess mine will be about 10-15 cm too long. Bummer!

    • @ChadHooverFishing
      @ChadHooverFishing  3 года назад +1

      It won’t be “too long” if you are in a high seat and a little taller, it just won’t be optimal for a higher stroke angle which is more efficient. I just really like the fact that I can adjust mine to make it longer when I need leverage for maneuvering and shorter when I want to paddle more efficiently, especially when I’m standing

    LOL- You just solved a problem I've been having now for over a year. Crazy thing is- this is probably about the 5th time I've watched this video and somehow I kept missing the part about paddle length and not letting your drip rings go underwater.. now I know why I keep taking a bath every time I go kayak fishing. My instinct was to buy a longer paddle- I'm glad I watched this- you just save me a lot of money and aggravation.
    Man- I've been trying to ask you about this problem for this whole year and the whole time the answer was in one of the first vids of your I ever watched- this one. I don't think i was describing it clearly enough for you to understand my issue- I need a shorter paddle man- or maybe to just adjust my drip rings a little- we'll see. I think have a 245- I'm about 5' 11"= in a much lower seat than you, and a more narrow boat. I bet i need a 230-235 at most.

    • @ChadHooverFishing
      @ChadHooverFishing  3 года назад

    • @stoneysdead689
      @stoneysdead689 3 года назад

      @@ChadHooverFishing Yep- the shorter paddle really helps a lot- makes kayaking so much more enjoyable. I went this morning and for the first time I didn't get wet, I reduced my rods and gear enough to be comfortable but sill safe and effective- caught some beautiful bass, had a great time. Thank you so much, you and Gene Jenson helped me get the hang of this more than anyone- took over a year but, I'm finally glad I bought my kayak.

    My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

    Hey Chad. Great instruction on how to paddle.
    Been on a SOT (Ocean Kayak Trident) for 25 years. Always been a low angle guy for no particular reason. Just seemed right. I’m purchasing a Crescent Crew very soon and trying to figure out if I need a new paddle, then blade style, and length. I currently have a 25 year old Werner carbon fiber 230 cm. That paddle suits my flat sweep stroke just fine in a 28” wide OK. But after watching your video and going to a wider (35”) yak and discovering I need to get a lot steeper ( don’t want to be a 13’ Zara Spook), I think I should go with a BB paddle with more of a pear shape blade. I’m 6’ tall. If I don’t go adjustable, how long a paddle do you recommend? And I will be developing a much more high angle stroke.
    Thanks for opening my eyes.
