"Never over squeeze the shaft", solid advice!
Underrated comment💀💀
🤣
Yup you’ll get a nice little blister
I am brand new to kayak fishing and kayaking in general. This sort of instructional video is pure gold for me. Please keep making videos of this type. Cheers.
I just bought a fishing kayak, and am awaiting for it to arrive. After years of not being able to go fishing (long story…), I can't wait to get back to the water, but I have never been on a kayak before and did a lot of research before purchasing it. While looking for info on RUclips, I came across your excellent videos, and I think these are just perfect. So...I just wanted to say thanks, Chad, for these very well presented and informative lessons, and I will try my best to take what you've taught out on the lake with me.
Did it came? How is it?
For someone just about to get into kayak fishing, this stuff is gold. Thanks for the info! Very well presented.
This dude is the king of the one liners...never skips a beat.
great video. im 66 years old, never been on a kayak, they are inferior to pirogues which i spent my life in, but no pirogues in the ozarks so im gonba buy one. lots if fools on youtube lying and acting lika genius. you, however, are articulate, knowledgable, experienced, and know how to make an honest video. u th man! thank u
Thank you
Not a single thing about fishing, and yet it was one of the more informative videos I've watched recently. Awesome job!
J Holl thanks! It sorta is about fishing because it’s about how to get to them more efficiently
As a new kayak fisherman, this video says it all. Thanks for the pro tips
Thank you Myron.
I love the videos dropping during the day
Porter K thanks. I’m pretty much sticking to 2:15 CST. 👍
Got my first kayak yesterday :-) thanks for the basic paddle techniques , much appreciated .
Solid advice, solid video. Thank you. I never thought about adjusting my drip rings.
Pretty much the perfect video for kayak fisherman.
“You look like a waterbug” haha. I love the phrases and sayings Chad always has. Sometimes I watch just to see what he says next. You the man!
Nick Berlin ha! Thanks
M.
Just got my first every kayak, sit on top fishing, paddled like a mad man and my arms and shoulder are destroyed. Glad I found your video.
Thanks for the help . I’m new to kayak fishing , gonna be watching a bunch of your vids . Bob
Really enjoy the how to videos and the ones on equipment tips.
Paul Karch thanks. Plenty more coming soon.
Thanks for this video buddy!
You are welcome Casey
It never fails my first cast I end up forgetting to slow the kayak down. Maybe since you mentioned it I'll remember next time
Thanks Chad, love the how to videos. I'm just getting to the kayak fishing and your videos are awesome.
Thanks for the good tips looking forward to getting into this sport.
Great video sir thank you so much.
good info, how to paddle v2. Now something I do not remember on the video on parking poles, or that you mentioned using the same parking pole with the power pole option. This video shows the parking pole sticking out of the power pole.
Awesome video Chad. Thanx for teaching this
Great job Chad, very helpful, thank you.
Hint: Use your legs. Push on the foot on the same side that you are pulling the paddle. This pushes the boat forwared. If you just your arms, you are pushing the kayak forward with your ASS. As the blade travels toward the stern, rotate your body (watching the blade, helps). This minimizes using your arm muscles, so you don't get tired so quickly. Been paddling 46 years. Took professional instruction my first two years, 3 one week courses, resulted in a life long enjoyment of kayaking.
Great video.!! I will be following all these tips once I get a kayak 😁 thanks for sharing
Good video. Very informative. I typically loose interest in educational videos but I stay with yours all the way to the end. Good work. 🖒
Great vid. I'll be picking up my first fishing kayak soon so these instructional videos definitely help!
Great video, very instructive
Patrick Mahoney 👊🏻
Patrick he did 20 years in the Navy. He definitely learned how to teach and instruct.
For people that paddle long distances, I highly suggest watching some sea kayaker videos on core rotation. Primarily using your body core can take you a lot farther without smoking your arms.
Was just searching this still looking at which paddle to buy.
Great video bud! Thanks
Thanks so much for the info!!!!
Be careful "not to over squeeze the shaft!" Haha. I feel like a 12 year old. J/K! Thanks for the tips.
*You must correct them while they are doing it..*
🎶“So the next time that she cheats.. you know she won’t over-squeeze me.”🎶
I'm 6ft lanky arms and I use a 240cm paddle I find it works good for me especially when you use the correct strokes I cruise fine I cant see using a longer one bc I feel as though it would get in the way
nice brother.... the red code has been clicked😁😁
So should I switch up my "grease hand" from time to time so the shaft doesn't start to curve in that direction?😉
LaRueOBR 5.56 Ha, NO!!!!!
🤣
Just purchase that carbon bending branches paddle not cheap at all I hope it’s good
Hey Chad. Can you do a video on how you install a fish finder on the bonafide?
Just took my CK1 out for the first time. I have Aqua Bound Tango paddle, 240cm. Well, I got drenched. My paddle dripped all over my arms, upper body and legs. My rear tankwell was full of water. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks
Thanks I learned alot
Hey brother, I pray all is well. Have a few questions. I'm a big guy, 6'4" 350lb and I am wanting to get into kayaking, primarily ocean style. What would be a good starting kayak for me and what would be a good starting paddle?
I have an Old Town PDL 120 and a 230 cm paddle. I get drenched when I use it. I think it's much too short. How are you getting away with it at 240?
Great tips
Great video
🎵hold on loosely but don't let go, if you squeeze to tightly your gonna lose control....
thank 4 the tips
Many Thanks Sir Chad... Peace

Hey Chad, I’ve been looking at getting into kayak bass fishing. Do you have any recommendations for entry level kayaks that would carry me? I’m 6’6” and 375lbs. I’ve watched your other videos for picking an entry level kayak but they are to small. I don’t really want to spend more than 600 on an entry level kayak. Thanks!
Sweet
Love the channel
Owen Isaacs thank you!
Chad Hoover what do you think of the vibe sea ghost 110
Owen Isaacs I don’t. Never paddled it. Haven’t had access to one and they asked me to review it so I asked them to send me one and never heard back.
Sorry, wish I could be more helpful.
I’m new to kayak fishing but when I go, my left leg gets soaked from my dripping paddle but my right one stays dry. I have the drip protectors on my paddle but not sure what I’m doing wrong. Any suggestions?
SwitchbackXThunter Never paddled a kayak but wonder, from this video, if maybe you’re dipping that blade in too deep such that your water defector is being submerged. (I know, the comment is a year old). I plan on buying my first Kayak tomorrow..
Currently dealing with the annoyance of tennis elbow, because of bad form....
I really wish I had a little more self restraint. I had the idea of starting in a paddle kayak, to learn the fundamentals before going with a pedal kayak, but that kind of idea doesn't last long in my brain. The only time my paddle comes out, is when it's too shallow/weedy for the pedal drive, and it's obvious that my technique is lacking. Some day I'm sure I will leave the pedal drive at home, and just work on paddling. Unfortunately some day probably won't be here any time soon...
Thanks for the lesson. Much appreciated! >
Thanks Chad
Man I see a lot of people paddling wrong too
My grease hand...I’ve heard that somewhere before
Can not see comments.
From my one night of internet research, sounds like everyone is buying a 240 cm .I'm almost 5 ft 6....definitely don't want to end up with wrong size
If you are actually concerned about wind resistance enough to use a feathered paddle it seems you would use a boat that wouldn't have you sitting at treetop level.
TridentDriver1987 first off nice name. now then, sit on top kayaks are designed for fishing thusly you need stability with a higher point of balance so you can stand as well as more access to space for gear and fish and stuff than just paddling around. the sit in kayaks tend to be more for rough water like sea kayaks or white water kayaks which are fun but pretty useless to someone who wants to go fishing. it just depends on what your doing with your kayak. if your just lake fishing and cruising inlets get a sit on top. if you want to shoot some rapids or catch some waves you should get a sit in.
effishiently
Wish I never sold my yak.
:)
I don't believe in fear pain sickness disease say God healed you your family only believing that way
never understood why having 8 fishing poles is needed lol.
Edit 9+*
Then I won’t try to explain it. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. 😜
All of this should come naturally.
If not, you prolly shouldn't do it.
Chad Hoover I am relatively new to your channel less than a month and I think your method of instruction is fantastic. But then again as a Navy veteran myself, I can recognize when another Navy veteran (especially a 20-year one like yourself) knows how to give good instructions and training. Keep up the great work. Thank you for all that you do.
Les Deffner thank you. I appreciate that and thanks for your service as well
Excellent video. New to kayak fishing and paddling in general. Glad I found this video. Thanks 🙏
Thank you and thanks for watching
Interesting. I keep the blades symmetrical, and both hands stay on it. Paddled 9 miles on one trip and didn't even get tired
Yeah,
Efficient paddle techniques will reduce fatigue and keep you paddling #KBF4Life
Could you show how you rig your anchor? Do you use a trolley? Do you remove it before you load/unload your boat? I find I rarely bring mine because it seems to be more hassle than it is usually worth deploying and pulling it up + positioning it. Looking for ways to be more efficient on the water, as well as getting on and off the water.
Hello Sr. I'm just learning a little bit about kayaking, What is the use of the longest pole in the back part of your kayak?
That’s the pole for the Power Pole Micro Anchor.
This is the best paddle technique video Iv'e seen on RUclips. Thank you so much Chad for the video.
Just got my first kayak and coming across this video was very helpful... I'm a pretty quick learner so once I have everything adjusted correctly I'm sure I'll be tearing up the lakes in no time
Thanks you and I’m glad the video helped.
I wish I had seen this before I ordered my paddle. On the advise of 2 different "experts, I ordered a 250cm paddle. So, I guess mine will be about 10-15 cm too long. Bummer!
It won’t be “too long” if you are in a high seat and a little taller, it just won’t be optimal for a higher stroke angle which is more efficient. I just really like the fact that I can adjust mine to make it longer when I need leverage for maneuvering and shorter when I want to paddle more efficiently, especially when I’m standing
New subscribers here from Trail Trash Outdoors! Wow! Love the drawstroke and sweepstroke tips! My brother and myself just got our first kayaks recently and love it! Figured some tips wouldnt hurt! So glad we checked out your channel and much love new friend-TTO
Show us how to use electronics
Cesar Ruiz they are in work right now
That's just not enough fishing rods.
Possibly
Awesome video thanks for the info just got my first kayak 2 days ago
LOL- You just solved a problem I've been having now for over a year. Crazy thing is- this is probably about the 5th time I've watched this video and somehow I kept missing the part about paddle length and not letting your drip rings go underwater.. now I know why I keep taking a bath every time I go kayak fishing. My instinct was to buy a longer paddle- I'm glad I watched this- you just save me a lot of money and aggravation.
Man- I've been trying to ask you about this problem for this whole year and the whole time the answer was in one of the first vids of your I ever watched- this one. I don't think i was describing it clearly enough for you to understand my issue- I need a shorter paddle man- or maybe to just adjust my drip rings a little- we'll see. I think have a 245- I'm about 5' 11"= in a much lower seat than you, and a more narrow boat. I bet i need a 230-235 at most.
Sorry about that but it sounds like you have it dialed in now. Thanks for watching
@@ChadHooverFishing Yep- the shorter paddle really helps a lot- makes kayaking so much more enjoyable. I went this morning and for the first time I didn't get wet, I reduced my rods and gear enough to be comfortable but sill safe and effective- caught some beautiful bass, had a great time. Thank you so much, you and Gene Jenson helped me get the hang of this more than anyone- took over a year but, I'm finally glad I bought my kayak.
Hmmm. Very good information my man. Thank you. Be safe
Kevin Sandells thanks
Never grip you shaft too tight!
Great info, good teaching. I got it all, now I need to go and practice 😜😂 thank you buddy 👊
Great advice New to Kayak fishing didn't know they had drip rings , I thought everyone had Soggy armpits
...squeeze the black out of the paddle shaft... Lmfao 😂😂😂
My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!
Just bought a Bonafide RS117 and am 5'10" tall. Wondering what length is best for my height and kayak? Maybe 240cm?
Now stand up!!!and take the bow!!! No pun attended!!!
Thank You. This is great information. It is going to help me a lot as I transition into Kayak Tournament fishing.
Good luck on that and I hope you crush them
Between these latest videos and reading your book I'm actually noticing a lot about my habits and able to make adjustments necessary. I'm enjoying these instructional videos more than ever. You've mentioned several things that I notice about myself and being able to identify where I'm having difficulty and using these instructional videos it's much easier for me to make progress. Thanks for dropping this helpful bit of knowledge on us bro. Keep it up!
John Bolton thanks for the feedback and I’m glad it helps. Preciate the support.
Hey Chad. Great instruction on how to paddle.
Been on a SOT (Ocean Kayak Trident) for 25 years. Always been a low angle guy for no particular reason. Just seemed right. I’m purchasing a Crescent Crew very soon and trying to figure out if I need a new paddle, then blade style, and length. I currently have a 25 year old Werner carbon fiber 230 cm. That paddle suits my flat sweep stroke just fine in a 28” wide OK. But after watching your video and going to a wider (35”) yak and discovering I need to get a lot steeper ( don’t want to be a 13’ Zara Spook), I think I should go with a BB paddle with more of a pear shape blade. I’m 6’ tall. If I don’t go adjustable, how long a paddle do you recommend? And I will be developing a much more high angle stroke.
Thanks for opening my eyes.
I agree with your assessment. I will be discussing this more in upcoming videos
Doing research for two weeks now during surgery recovery After recovery I want to go for fishing/kayaking . Can not believe I did not look at paddling first. This video I found very informative. I have a lot to learn, know little about fishing must less kayaking. 68 years old and still like learning new things
Love it!! Hope you get better quickly and get back after it
Thanks Chad, I appreciate the info!
Hey chad, Do you prefer high angle paddle blades over low angle blades?
First I need to get a rudder for my 10 foot feelfree lure , otherwise no matter how I paddle it is not going to be a google traction
Good video!
I got tennis elbow so bad this year from paddling wrong, wish I woulda watched this a long time ago :(
Better late than never! 👊🏻
Thanks for the tip!
