    I really love these *'retro-designs'* for the Gen 8 Pokemon, Grimmsnarl is my favorite from them! it clearly goes to show from The roster of Pokemon that *James Turner is the Art Director of Sword and Shield games* - in an interview where he was drawing his distinct Vanillite while asked questions, he explained that he prefers doing more peculiar and *(literally and figuratively)* alien pokemon designs and doesn't draw that much traditional conventional designs, for example in addition to his trademark *Vanillite line* , he drew things like *Golett* and *Golurk* and later on *Ultra Beasts Buzzwole* and *Guzzlord* - all of this would perfectly fall in line and fit the description with most of if not all the pokemon designs of this generation - My absolute favorite designs from this generation are the frankenstein fossil pokemon with their mismatched body parts because of the ridiculous and fascinating concept behind them

    I’m probably in the minority, but I actually really loved the ink and watercolour art from the 90’s gen 1 and 2. I looked at that art as a kid way back when it first came out and found it captivating.
    Lots of people seem to hate it now, but back when there was only 150 Pokémon (not Mew, we didn’t even know about that!), we would try to draw and design our own Pokémon. I think that’s because the rougher ink and watercolour designs inspired kids to try and copy it.
    So I’m not surprised that I actually prefer your gen 1 and 2 style renders of these Pokémon. I can’t see kids trying to redraw some of these ultra beasts or gen 8 designs, but the retro style redesigns... maybe! Just maybe.

    • @LongStripeyScarf
      @LongStripeyScarf 3 года назад

      @@adityam4263 it had changed beyond recognition by then. Pokémon was on it’s most famous high point from 1998 to about 2001. By the time gen 4 came out, most of those fans had moved on and the ones that stayed were struggling to see it in the same way. I vividly remember arguing with a family friend’s kid in about 2007 over the differences in generations. His argument for Gen 4 being better was that it’s better because NEW, which is dumb. Those kids don’t have the same attachment to Gen 1 and 2 because they just weren’t there. They missed the phenomenal craze era and rode on a second, lesser peak after 2007. I cannot stress how massive Pokémon was in the 90’s, especially to the ones that weren’t there. It was in every shop, every window, everyone had cards, people were hooking up gameboys in the street to trade, it was being talked about in newspapers and on the radio… it was next level. The power of nostalgia for that time is something that kids from later generations won’t ever understand.
      I’m no genwunner, but honestly, you had to be there. It’s not even come remotely close to being on that level since. That’s why Gen 1 is so overexposed. To most people, that’s the difference between someone going “Oh, that’s Slowbro!” and then just saying “Is that a new one? Nahh, I prefer Slowbro.” because they remember that, even in their 30’s they remember Slowbro.
      By about 2001, most fans were pushing teenage years and they stepped away from Pokémon. But they never forgot that time of phenomenon. Gen 1 gets exposure to bring them back, Game Freak wishes they could recapture the heights of the late 90’s again.

Simple yet distinctive designs (with easily identifiable profiles), two primary color palette, and a more natural world and mythological inspirations. What I like in the first few gens of pokemon is how the majority of pokemon look like monsters made for battle and how their pokedex puctures make it look like they were snapped in the wild. Whereas in the newer gens it feels like they've gone for a more plushie feel/look for the majority of pokemon and their pokedex pictures now look they're modelling for the camera.

    • @Dexuz
      @Dexuz 4 года назад +18

      @@keaganhunter5365 That was pretty much the point, Pokémon stands for pocket monsters, the creatures were supposed to be like the monsters of any JRPG of those ages, living in a "normal" world with people and animals (while we actually don't see animals, gen 1 has some mentions of them on some dex entries)
      The change point was when Gamefreak decided to completely erase other creatures of their franchise's world, and make the Pokémon actually be the main part of that world's ecosystem, now we have the Aether Foundation doing conservative works to save Alola's Corsola population from their main predator Toxapex.
      And I don't think that's wrong at all, its actually pretty cool and original, but that's the difference, maybe now they are more "Pokémon" instead of "pocket monsters".

      Apex predator I have a love/hate relationship with Intelleon. I was super disappointed when I evolved mine because I thought it looked weird. It’s almost in an uncanny valley area for me with its rounded body, large hands, and limbs that are WAY too long and thin. At the same time, though, I can’t deny there’s something cool about it. The way it points it’s finger guns, the way it crouches before it attacks, the way it’s translucent black eyelid folds down...that’s pretty badass. This is an odd comparison, but I’d liken it to a Spy Vs Spy style of spy character rather than a James Bond one. It’s weird and wacky, but there’s definitely a bit of cool charm to it that is to be appreciated.

      Honestly now we have Rookidee and Coorvisquire I think that trend Is finally over, the regional bird being mono flying is most likely a pretty big turning point for future games

    • @alienplatypus7712
      @alienplatypus7712 4 года назад +3

      @@Red-hy8df Sure the final evolution does't stay flying only, but you have to realise that rokidee and corvisquire are literally the only non legendary pokemon to ever be mono flying, with tornadus and tornadus-therian being the only other case in the games' history to do this. Pidgey
      , hoothoot, taillow, starly, pidove, fletchling and pikipek all share a few things in common, but not a single one has a single mono flying evolution, what bare's mention is that fletchling doesn't end up normal/flying. Much like corviknight, talonflame has no normal typing, despite it evolving from a normal/flying. This shows there absolutely was a precedent that, had it been followed by the corviknight line would have meant rookidee and corvisquire should have been normal/flying like every other regional bird in pokemon history. But it isn't, for no apparent reason rookidee and corvisquire don't have the normal type and are the non-legendary pokemon in pokemon history to have their typing, despite a complete lack of any distinguishing features that would imply they should not have the normal type. The only explanations are either game freak has changed what they consider a mono flying type versus a normal/flying type is, or they've possibly stopped caring typing pokemon consistently (unlikely but I'll give the benefit of doubt), in either scenario mono flying types should become much more common in the future, as I said.

    • @TornaitSuperBird
      @TornaitSuperBird 4 года назад +2

      Demon Eye X || Amac Probably the same. The normal type is just there to let people know they're birds. If flying type had remained "bird" type as it originally was, all of the normal/flying birds would just be pure bird type.

    • @Dexuz
      @Dexuz 4 года назад

      @@TornaitSuperBird What I don't understand is why they decided to drop that idea, I mean, its not like in gen 1 there was a Pokémon that was air related, like Tornadus, Drifblim, or Fan Rotom, so it would be perfectly fine for the birds staying as Bird type, and things like Charizard just be pure Fire type.
      Its like they tried to use the Wind element trope but... not quite?
      Its just so weird.

      @@TheButterWombatJustmaghookit honestly looking back since gen 1 they have had a lot of hit or misses when it came to pokemon design. but to be fair I get why they went with the three starters because they all have strong ties to English culture as well. Yea I agree a Shakespearian or victorian pokemon would be cool but honestly, they already did the loch ness before with Lapras and a victorian maid with gothitelle. While it's always a tradition to make pika clones it people would probably just say "Oh this is just a lapras clone" ~~which they should have made a galarian lapras and maybe a gotherita line~~ But i still surprisingly enjoy a decent amount of pokemon designs in the new game, but that's my take on it.
