One of my favorite stone ocean villains. I always felt kind of bad for him because he was in a pretty unfortunate situation and suffered a lot. But while Stanley Yelnats didn’t let that experience turn him bad, Donatello did and his actions eventually caught up to him
Same, i feel like all deserved some type of redemption, though donatello and Ungalo would need more work. He also reminds me of Charles J. Guitaeu in that he took any criticism and bad fortune very negatively and would only demand total approval and good fortune from everything, even if small.
I loved how Versus actually stuck around for awhile after his fight to persue heaven even if he was never going to get it. I wished more villains didn’t just disappear after their fights.
donatello's arogance is a way to know that not all minor characters are gonna be dumb guys who just follow orders and have almost 0 personality, donatello truly shows that he doesnt want to die so that pucci can just achieve his goal and forget about him, doing everything he can to try to also achieve heaven too, but that unfortunately turned for the worse for him as everything he did to keep living just gets back to him (him turning into a snail and being used by pucci)
Versus made the decision to put children in deadly danger without any hesitation because, in his mind, he wasn’t committing the worst thing that could happen to them. In his subjective mind, the far worse fate awaited Jolyne, who would have to survive and constantly reflect on the past. It doesn't remove his actual guilt, but it alleviates the subjective guilt. For Versus, the risk of instantly dying is not something exceptionally misfortunate and cruel, because he has experienced far worse events and survived, but was left mentally scarred by these circumstances. A slow feverish death and the need to live on after an abuse is much more painful than an instant death from an explosion. From his point of view, the whole situation wasn’t the worst thing that can happen to “a child". Perhaps he himself once wanted to die rather than go on living constantly haunted by his traumas. He even stated explicitly that living with certain memories (such as a feeling of guilt) is worse than death. His worldview is represented perfectly in his stand: the ability to dig up the occurrences of the past and making them affect one’s present. He is shaped by his childhood and can’t escape it, same happens to the people who come in contact with his stand. I’d go even further and say that the strength of Underworld lies on the psychological impact it has on the opponent. It almost happened to Ermes. The possibility of dying stuck in the earth’s memory is just a cherry on top if a person won’t break mentally. Do what you want with that information.
I also like to think he's subconsciously doing this out of revenge. The shoes that made his life take a turn for the worse were going to be sold to help disabled children, so he's taking revenge by throwing three disabled children in harm's way and making sure at least one of them will die.

It would be cool to mention that there’s a couple songs in Underworld’s library of music that likely influenced Donatello. One called “Change the Weather” is so literal, considering Underworld LITERALLY changes Weather Report into his old self. “Sole Survivor” could also be used in the case of the plane crash Jolyne and Hermes had to survive as the song talks about being trapped at the “bottom of a mineshaft” with the clock running out. “Call Me No. 1” also seems to fit him for… self explanatory reasons lol
Rikiel and Donatello are Part 5 villains type due to Rikiel got Pesci's Character development and Donatello being Risotto Nero to against Main Diavolo(in Donatello case he wants to achieve Heaven by himself by betraying Pucci)
In a matter of speaking, Donatello truly was dealt a completely unfair hand by fate. From start to finish, nothing ever went his way. He got a worse life than Dio. Because his father still ultimately had a chance at a second life by being adopted into the Joestar family and now had all the tools and resources to reshape his life. It's just that Dio chose to fly to close to the sun and his wings were burned off. In Donatello's case, no such second ever comes his way. Not even after he steals Jotaro's memory disc so that he could use the heaven plan for himself, dying almost immediately. And unfortunately, the Heaven plan doesn't even offer him anything sense there are no happy moments in his own life to emotionally prepare for. The best there was, was wanting to steal the Heaven plan because using it himself had the potential of getting him a better fate the next time around if Pucci doesn't get the chance. And even their he failed, due to Heavy Weather's effect he lost all of his best mobility advantages and ended up used as Pucci's shield. Because that's all Donatello was to Pucci, a meat shield. To be used, then discarded like he was worthless. What a terrible fate.
Something I noticed watching this that I don't think anyone else has pointed yet is how the people in the memories know exactly what is going to happen to them and are calm about it, even in the face of death, which is exactly the same effect as the goal of the heaven plan
Donatello was actually voiced by Eiji Miyashita in EoH, not by Zoro’s va. But I agree, it would be really cool if they got him to voice Donatello in the anime
I could never understand why the manga went out of its way to make parallels between Donatello and Pucci. The moment Donatello is shown is like Pucci is looking at himself in the mirror. But I always needed to understand what the point of that was. Now I think that it was to say that like Donatello Pucci felt that he was deserving of the power of Heaven, the same way Dio felt deserving of great power just because. Still, if someone did make the connection, please share. Cowabunga!
The more literal reason why Donatello and Pucci's physical similarities were emphasised was probably to foreshadow how Pucci would eventually use him as a body double to escape.
Schroder: "I LOVE underworld-- You could recreate 911 with underworld if you really wanted to! Shuckmeister: Uhhh....OKAY! Schroder: The ground remembers...

You know I sadly speedread Stone Ocean to get to Steel Ball Run 2 years ago so I completely forgot about Versus and his stand. I loved watching him in the anime and the fact that he was the most Dio-like and got his theme as well. This video made me like him even more and he is now among my fav antagonists in the series. Great job!
@@schizophrenicsnowman3226 He's talking about the batch releases. The hype died within 2-3 days after each release when people should have been talking about Stone Ocean weekly.
I just realized that Underworld's ability and the way the people within the memories KNOW THEIR FATES AND ACCEPT THEM is a mini-showcase of what Pucci's Heaven plan is for! How ironic that Versus wanted to reach what he thought Heaven was when he already had it...
Versus Versace is also a diffusion line of Versace, hence Donatello Versus is a derivative and "more affordable version" of his father. He also has a deep v-neck shirt for "Versace".
What do you think would happen If Donatello survived? Like, if Jolyne simply didn't kill him with that punch? Would he join them in the fight against Pucci? How would he have changed the C-Moon/Made in Heaven fight? I think it'd be interesting, he gave me a bit of "Hol Horse as a Crusader" vibe during the Weather Report fight, where he was driving Jolyne and Hermes. I know he'd be out for himself, and is very prideful, but I could see him wanting revenge on Pucci and a chance to achieve Heaven himself, so even if he didn't team up with them, I could see him trying to intervene on his own in that arc.
first of all, it wasn't jolyne who killed him, it was anasui 🤓, and 2nd he probably wouldn't if he had any say in the matter. but i do like the idea of him joining bc he's pretty much guaranteed dead otherwise
I love that your going back to talk about characters in your new video style a true successor from you it just works videos Plus I love how Donatello backstory is based off of holes it's my favorite book of all time
So everyone prediction time, do you think Armstrong's video will be a normal one or a Building a Bastard video? There's a good argument for either, but what do you think?
@@zashgekido5616 that's due to him despising the patriots and other warmongers who make people fight for things they don't believe in. The difference between him and Raiden is that while Raiden acts outside of the system to achieve his goal, Armstrong works from the inside and effectively becomes the system he swore to destroy
With so much that goes into him, I'm kinda of disappointed in retrospect that he wasn't fleshed out into a more major villain. I feel like another arc could've been spent on him taking the lead from Pucci and becoming even more vicious an antagonist.
wish versus was the only dio son aside from giorno, makes his character more a lot more impactful and he fits the personality of dio far more than the other 2
I've always assumed that a hundred days off was the inspo for underworld. When I listened to the album during the arc, it clicked in very well. I'll listen to the other album though
All of Dio's sons are like 2 sides of coins. Giorno and Rikiel are inherited Jonathan's attitude as they give respects to the villains but they can be ruthless like Dio when they want to. Versus and Ungalo inherited Dio's attitude more as they are ruthless, selfish and scumbag. Versus is like Dio 2.0, has a tough childhood life and can't catch a break on his misfortunes. So, he wants the other suffers like he is. He's like the opposite of Giorno while Giorno has a motivation to be a Gangstar to stop drugs after saving a mafia boss, Versus wants to make the other suffering like he is.
KAMEN RIDER!! AHH! I'm happy to see someone else talk about it. I've been a fan for ages and hearing that made me smile. I wouldn't mind you doing some deep dives in Kamen riders
Yeah, Rikiel was obviously some sort of person who wanted relief, and unfortunately that relief was given by Pucci. His backstory feels a lot like Fugo’s; it’s enticing and basic so it leaves a lot to the imagination, and both surprisingly shocking stories are given to characters never used again.
Since VerSUS can bring people back ( sorta) as well as somewhat recreate stands abilities with weather reports disc, could he bring back stand users that fight for him, and stand users who are still alive, shown when he made a 2nd pucci to steal weathers disc? So maybe-ish
His stand can't dig up other stands. What happened was that he sighed up the memory of Pucci with the disk and then stole the real disk from the real Pucci later.
this character analysis is SO GOOD omg I always felt sad that Dio's sons got introduced so close to the end and got so little screentime despite being dio's literal children but watching this makes me appreciate all the thought that Araki put into the themes Versus represents + the tie-in's into stone ocean's themes overall!!
It looks a bit more like a more humanoid Alien Metron to me, the small silver studs on the side of the face and the suckers running down the back really sells the resemblance
He definitely didn't need to throw that third child in the seat of the plane but honestly that's the only truly evil thing he did. Every other action taken by the character made sense from his perspective. I don't think he was much of a bastard. There are characters way more evil in stone ocean then Donatello. Donatello is honestly a great character and one I feel is underated. Not only is his stand brilliant but so is he. He is able to outsmart Jolyne and her friends on multiple occasions despite his stand being much weaker and only having just become a proper stand user that day. Compare him to dio who took months to fully control his stand. Infact he was extremely close to achieving his goal, all he would have had to do was dig up the memory of the green baby and fuse with it. He was also the only minor antagonist in stone ocean who wasn't willing to he pucci's pawn and sacrifice himself like a little bitch. The only flaw with him is that his death kinda sucks. Man deserved a better death then that.
Only the third? Dude, that's messed up logic. The opportunity was opened up for children to die the moment he started throwing any children in there. And the rest of his screen time, I just saw a manchild who complained about his birthright, like Dio was seeking happiness because he suffered. He acts like Dio when he was a child. He's responsible for his own death because it was a chain of events he started. As well as hundreds more deaths at the hands of snail predators. He is no way anyone with redeeming value. And he only got the upper hand because his ability is kind of crazy. He showed that he could barely think one step ahead. To sum up, he showed up, got beaten mentally, endangered hundreds, and got humiliation in almost every way possible from people who had him beat in every way. He's interesting, but he is a garbage person. No moral high ground here.
@@RiukuCresent What do you mean unlike him Dio suffered and that's why he's messed up? Donatello suffered too? He was cursed by a bloodline he knew nothing about. Infact Donatello has several things in common with Jolyne the protagonist. Both were wrongfully imprisoned, both had an absent father and both just wanted freedom. Also manchildish for him to want to achieve heaven because Dio is his father and not pucci's? Plus he suffered a lot because of Dio, it makes perfect sense that he would want compensation for his suffering. What is the alternative for him? Let Jolyne beat the shit out of him and die a pawn anyway? Also what do you mean by stupid and barely able to come up with ideas? He outsmarted Jolyne a character known for their creativity and intelligence on several occasions. Did he not outsmart her when she dived out of the plane to attack him only to get caught in the Jet? Did he not outsmart Emporio when he revealed their location by calling his cellphone? Did he not outsmart Jolyne when he excavated salt to defend himself against a stand that was physically way stronger? I mean the dude litterally almost succeeded and won. Also I'm not ganna pretend he's the most moral person just that he's not as evil as other "bastards" in JoJo like cicolata, Steely Dan, Tomaki Damo, Angelo ect. To be honest he probably would have been a normal person if born into better circumstances.
@X fighters ...I said 'like', not 'unlike'. I was comparing him to child Dio, hence the manchild statement. Because like I said, he acts like child Dio, you know, the one who got his face pounded in by young Johnathan? Like Dio's early years, he could get the upper hand... when people didn't know what was coming. Before Dio was a supervillain, he was much like Versus here, a underhanded person who had to rely on being ruthless to be much of a threat. Except child and teen Dio didn't have superpowers, but against a very naive younger Johnathan, didn't need much. But they kept underestimating their enemies and that made them unable to plan too far ahead. As for the immoral part, yes he isn't as bad as some part 3, 5 and 6 characters. But those are really low benchmarks. You're basically guaranteed that as long as you don't act like a serial killer.

Everyone always says him throwing 3 children down there was unnecessary just because pucci said so. It wasn't. If anything it was less than what was necessary. Versus Versace is also a sub-brand of Versace, which was gifted from Gianni to Donatella.

I LOVE Donatello. He has a cool stand, a cool look, and a tragic backstory that shows the unfairness of the world.
The one who bullied was a prisoner, not a guard. It was mistranslated, as confirmed by the anime. Also, love the part 6 content. Keep it up!
It was a gang member
It makes perfect sense that Donatello is the Perfect Foil to Jolyne.
It's fittingly ironic that a guy like this was voiced by Zoro in Eyes of Heaven, I really hope he reprises the role for the anime
Donatello was actually voiced by Eiji Miyashita in EoH, not by Zoro’s va. But I agree, it would be really cool if they got him to voice Donatello in the anime
He Was Voiced By JACK ATLAS
crazy story idea for an alternate world: Leone Abbacchio and donatello versus as detectives, solving crimes and mysteries together
Cowabunga!
I think the parallel is between the son of dio that most resembles the father vs the true sucessor of dios will
The more literal reason why Donatello and Pucci's physical similarities were emphasised was probably to foreshadow how Pucci would eventually use him as a body double to escape.
He's coming in few hours!

Someone once posed the idea of Donatello's story following that of holes because being under Bohemian Rhapsody's effects, which would be a fun idea
Jolyne had someone to pin the blame to, and when that man was attacked and proved he didn't mean bad, she acted to change her path
Donatello had noone specific to blame other than the whole world, and when given the chance, he chose to take revenge
Hmmm. I finally realized All four sons of Dio were have the Life bender ability Stand.
-Giorno: Giving life to the object.
-Ungalo: Giving life to the Fictional characters
-Rikiel: control the Creature-Rods
- Donatello: re-animated
😅
You know I sadly speedread Stone Ocean to get to Steel Ball Run 2 years ago so I completely forgot about Versus and his stand. I loved watching him in the anime and the fact that he was the most Dio-like and got his theme as well. This video made me like him even more and he is now among my fav antagonists in the series. Great job!
Poor Stone Ocean. Always sped-read. Cucked by Netflix.
@@Nastara I know...Poor Jolyne :(

Its way better than people realized and the anime finally gives it its due justice
Meti bout to make me go fight that damn Biolizard again with that intro 😂

@@Ramsey276one yeah that's right Timmy-boy, that's right.
If he's anything like his estranged brother, he's fighting Gold
I know its weird to say this especially since hes a villain but i feel like i can relate to donatello and his hardships in life
Versus Versace is also a diffusion line of Versace, hence Donatello Versus is a derivative and "more affordable version" of his father. He also has a deep v-neck shirt for "Versace".
Have him team-up with Abbacchio and you have one hell of a investigation duo in your hands.
“So it’s the same kind of stand as my Burning Down the House”
Good to know that the reach of this man's power merely stretches within my hometown.
I wonder if Rikiels stand will be fully drawn in the anime.
I hope so
u called it, it's fully drawn
Underworld is the stand closest to The World in appearance and with a time-themed ability.
I love that your going back to talk about characters in your new video style a true successor from you it just works videos
Plus I love how Donatello backstory is based off of holes it's my favorite book of all time
Ah yes, my favourite Stand: NETHERWORLD
DOOD!
I find it hilarious that Araki referenced the classic American novel Holes.
I hope it was intended as an homage, and wasn't just straight-up plagiarism...
watching this after the end of the stone ocean anime was the best. another great vid meti!!
Wasn't expecting another video so soon, thanks for tour work
So everyone prediction time, do you think Armstrong's video will be a normal one or a Building a Bastard video? There's a good argument for either, but what do you think?
I think normal. When everything is said and done there's a level of nobleness to Armstrong and his goals.. Just, corrupted, if that makes sense
@@zashgekido5616 that's due to him despising the patriots and other warmongers who make people fight for things they don't believe in. The difference between him and Raiden is that while Raiden acts outside of the system to achieve his goal, Armstrong works from the inside and effectively becomes the system he swore to destroy
@@callumbreton8930 Aye, Id say thats worth maybe a glory video but definitely not a bastard
I’ve always found it interesting how Underworld is so similar to Moody Blues. Really makes you start to compare Versus and Abbacchio
Underworld and Green Green Grass of Home gotta be some of my favourite stands
1:03 Donatello VerSUS haha get it
2:50 oh
That joke hit me like a bus
Among us is one of these memes that will never die and love it
i like the way his va says underworld in a similar way to how dio's va says the world
his range is around S because olrando, florda is 119.1 mi²
With so much that goes into him, I'm kinda of disappointed in retrospect that he wasn't fleshed out into a more major villain. I feel like another arc could've been spent on him taking the lead from Pucci and becoming even more vicious an antagonist.
His stand should have been the world
So we could say his name and stand together.
Donatello Versus, The World!
wish versus was the only dio son aside from giorno, makes his character more a lot more impactful and he fits the personality of dio far more than the other 2
I've always assumed that a hundred days off was the inspo for underworld. When I listened to the album during the arc, it clicked in very well. I'll listen to the other album though
I kinda get Jack Atlas vibes from him and I dig that
All of Dio's sons are like 2 sides of coins.
Every video you put out Meti is a knockout. Great content as always.
I did not expect the Kamen Rider Sasword reference. I'm happy about it but it took me by surprise.
KAMEN RIDER!! AHH! I'm happy to see someone else talk about it. I've been a fan for ages and hearing that made me smile. I wouldn't mind you doing some deep dives in Kamen riders
Its a shame the three couldn't be redeemed.
A reformed rikiel spin off would be cool
To me underworld's googles look like bent spoons, which is what versus used to dig in the hospital.
I thought the most important part of his design were his sideburns, where’d you get choker?!
Ah yes. Stanley Yelnats and his Stand Moody Blues Requiem.
Him and dio stand both have world in the name underworld and the world
this character analysis is SO GOOD omg I always felt sad that Dio's sons got introduced so close to the end and got so little screentime despite being dio's literal children but watching this makes me appreciate all the thought that Araki put into the themes Versus represents + the tie-in's into stone ocean's themes overall!!
It's almost like an escape room stand in a way
Wonder if Meti is gonna do a One Piece dissection or Naruto I'd love to see his opinion on certain characters
Since he was shown in the trailer, I have a feeling Donatello might not be shadowed in the anime. Wouldn't mind if he is, tho
bro was a better detective than abbacio
Neverworld has to be one of my favourite stands both in design and Ability
As a Toku fan, I never realized the Stand resembles Sasword with the eyes and tubes. Nooice
This is so strange because I've been talking people everything you just told in this video... Its like looking on your own self from a distance.
Wow i really love your videos meti, thank you for all your work. Part 6 is my favorite of jojo and versace is my favorite character in stone ocean, much so because of what he represents in the story. I found his arc to be super interesting and he acted as a great foil to jolyne like you said in the video, araki truly is a genius among geniuses, just to think the man did the weekly gig for the majority of his career all the while improving and reinventing himself, i get dumbfounded just thinking about it, tezuka was spot on indeed xD. Anyway keep up the awesome work, looking forward for the next video already
Love the fact how his stand s reams Wryyyyy like his father
Cant wait to see this tomorrow

Good to be back!
Nice use of the Biolizard theme
I was watching a short and then I heard you're voice thinking the channel used it on a short but then the screen went black
Everyone always says him throwing 3 children down there was unnecessary just because pucci said so. It wasn't. If anything it was less than what was necessary. If Versus threw more deathly ill children into his funky hole he would have won, or at the very least been able sack some guilt onto Jolyne. In short my goat Versus did nothing wrong your honor bring him back in part 9 araki
LMFAOOOO 💀but srsly ur so right i hope they drag his ass again in tjjl
