Whilst I congratulate the man on his skill and patience I find his methods and amount of work involved mind blowing , in so much that he seems to complicate things . I can only assume the man needs more machinery and some time spent looking at how other long established barrel making methods are used .
I mean ive got not the first idea but wouldn't you start with a round billet and use the endmill to get the square on the breach side 🤣 rather than spending "200" hours getting the square billet round
@@bradtyson Don't know the cost breakdown, or what's affordable/available to him. But yes, you can get a forged round blank with a lump as a single piece. See "Shotgun Barrel Making by Border Barrels"
im just wondering... would it be easier to start with a piece of round bar and face and turn it on the lathe instead of starting with a piece of square stock? why start with a square stock? is there a reason for this?🤔
Not in a month of Sundays would I ever consider making ANY barrel out of a chunk of steel! You can buy inexpensive pre-drilled blanks that only need reaming on the bore to get it to size and then profiling the exterior taper to finish it up! I have 2 for converting a Damascus double barrel to be able to handle modern shells.
Please I mean no disrespect , But Gunsmiths are not Machinists . Gunsmiths concentrate on fit and finish and many do a beautiful job at it , However when comes to general machine work they tend to be slow and their accuracy isn't always what they think it is. the blank you milled and turned would only be a few hours for a skilled machinist.
