A peruvian speaking here: San Martín didn't free any one in Peru.the viceroyalty of Perú didn't want to separate from Spain. The viceroyalty of Perú was extremely rich, powerful and full of art and culture. San Martín and Bolívar had to join to fight the "realists" that is to say that most of the population of Perú wanted to keep on being part of Spain. There were a lot of Spaniards and criollos in Perù at that time. And it's not colonial period. It's the "viceroyalty of Perú ". Perú and all the Spanish territories in the Americas were realms making part of the Spanish realm.
NOOOOO!!! “El Libertador de América” was Simón Bolivar. If San Martin ONLY proclaimed Perú as a sovereign nation addressing the crowd off a small balcony in a non challenging little town in the outskirts of Lima, that was it!
I am Spanish and I have lived in Peru for more than 3 years and Peru is not just Cusco and Lima, I live in Cajamarca and it is beautiful, Peru in general is beautiful and mystical.

LIMA HAS GOT THE OLDEST UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AMÉRICA CALLED SAN MARCOS UNIVERSITY AND A LOT OF WONDERFUL AND VERY OLD CHURCHES HUNDREDS OF YEARS OLD AND OUR CATHEDRAL OF LIMA.

Wait until you get to the airport, once you're heading out with your luggage you will see some stands who offer taxi services (Taxi Green, etc.) GO TO THE STANDS AND GET THE CAB THERE, don't follow any guy who offers the service himself, they are not legal taxis. Don't make the reservation for the service online either, it's mostly fake websites.
Most of Lima Downtown is not made up of 'colonial' buildings. There are very few places that properly keep them in place, and mostly are churches. Most of old standing old buildings date back from the mid 19th century onwards. Plaza san Martin turns 100 years this year.
