ABOUT US
We’re Colin and Samir, creators based out of Los Angeles California. We make videos about the creator economy, and the lessons we’ve learned over 10 years of being on RUclips. We also interview creators and try to get to the bottom of what’s working on RUclips and where the creator economy is headed.
Immediately recognised the thumbnail lol
Me too
Sane
same
Same
When I first watched it the thumbnail was different, I think he changed it
"I did it because I didn't know it was impossible" is such a great quote to have in mind whenever creating anything. Love the Citizen Kane nod
*insert "this content is now mine" meme
i met Wesley last year at Sundance. One of the most humble, bright kids ever. Had no idea it'd lead up to this moment years later, but never one more deserving!
in reality hollywood is just trying to find something original. This is similar to the movies pre-2015
I don't understand why script writers in hollywood still have a job after 10 years of crap due only focusing on picture quality and wokism.
ok
aw wtf thank you for the mention ❤
made my year- great analysis! 🙏
Congrats, what an inspiring story! Hope Greta Gerwig caught my latest RUclips short.
HHAHAHAHAHA REALLLL
Went to high school with Wesley and helped on the set of one of his films in the 9th grade. He's such a guy and the lengths he goes to in his filmmaking, even at 14 years old, is incredible
Soo what you think he got lots of help from his parents or someone? I doubt it’s the same with the film industry, but it’s a known thing that the music industry will prop up talent and pretend they had a humble upbringing when in actuality the labels orchestrated everything.
@@Channel-xy2wj arent you a bundle of sunshine
@@IdJones11for one, I didn’t even outright delegitimize their efforts. And as another point, skepticism exists for a reason. You’re right, maybe I am not a bundle of sunshines, but I can’t say your response was very good either.
@@IdJones11 🤣
can I ask is everyone at Jericho hs this cracked? I looked up the school and it seems like everyone there is prodigy in smth
I love when long RUclips videos have chapters to organize the video so per your question, yes I am reading this lol
Boutta watch this whole thing while I’m editing, thanks guys 🔥
Same. Got excited when I saw it aha. Motivation.
I saw Wesley's youtube video over 5 times by now. The first time I watched it, I was so captivated I rewatched it immediately after. I'm 18, it resonated with me more than any piece of content I've watched, like ever. Absolutely mind blowing to see this new age of cinema, and massive kudos to Wesley for getting a deal with hollywood.
I was an extra in this film and the fact one of my favorite directors has now seen my face makes me so happy. I imagine Wesly will soon become many people’s fave directors
It was a great short film, but it is important to remember that like 40 professional film makers worked on it. Far outside of the scope for a typical RUclipsr...
agreed it’s not that impressive
he wasn't just a typical RUclipsr, he is an actual filmmaker! this is a film meant as a full production, he just happened to have to upload it to RUclips. Don't discount the excellent work of him and all the people who worked on it! :)
I just work on mine with vigor, a Samsung phone to edit with and a free editing app and 1 go pro. 🎉
@@Sequaloidfurnish me examples of better shorts done by a 17 year old. Honestly curious.
@@meridiand81 You missed the point. That is exactly what he is saying: that the director is NOT a typical RUclipsr, or "just" a RUclipsr. Since he is not only a RUclipsr, that by default makes the movie a little bit less impressive. Imagine Steven Spielberg making a video and uploading it on RUclips lol, that wouldn't be as impressive as we would already expect something great from him.
I think the thing most missed is that the guy thought of himself as a filmmaker first. He just happened to find luck uploading to RUclips.
I think this is were most creators go wrong. They call themselves "RUclipsrs".
RUclips isnt a job. Its a place to upload content.
He also self funded hos own stuff. Many creators on this platform want to get paid to create there content. It should be find a way outside of RUclips to make money to fund your own stuff.
This is how all business works.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
love this take!
Spot freaking on!! It's much much harder to literally start from nothing and 'just" be a RUclipsr. The most successful people on this platform are those who already had a lot going for them in whatever profession they were in and they just started uploading here. Look at all the immensely popular guys like Jake and Logan who were huge on Vine, fitness guys who were champions before starting their RUclips channels etc.
I'm so glad "nothing, except everything" blew up on this site! It never made sense to me why short films and indie animations are so difficult to view outside of film festivals. Isn't the point of making something to show it to people?
Idk, it feels like some upcoming directors would rather take the "prestige" route of having their movie seen by 100 film critics/journalist rather than sharing it with real audiences of potentially millions on RUclips. The algorithm is fickle, but if your content is great then people will find it... So glad Wesley is paving the way and I hope others follow suit :)
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I was about to go to bed when I got this notification. Rip my sleep
You've got your priorities straight 😎
You say that everytime bro
I remember watching Wesley’s video and immediately questioning how RUclips is free
Because it's not free
Don't give them ideas💀
you are telling me the kid from Gotham is the main character and it did go viral. And there's quite attractive/ popular person on the cover. I AM ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED.🤯🤯🤯
Hahaha, yeah, exactly!
Saw that video being recommended for so long, just watched it bc of you guys! So cool to see the opportunities that can come from youtube
It is great to see creators breaking out into larger spaces and making things that are new and fresh, but as you said, there's still going to be a big group of people who want to stay here.
Myself for an example, (but not on this account) create lowe-budget, easy turn-out short stories every week and it's working out great.
Staying low budget means low pressure. Having a weekly upload schedule means if I fail one week, I can move on quickly.
It's allowed me to experiment and have fun with a lot of projects, and I bet there are many more out there who can find their own sweet spot as well.
Love seeing how the industry is growing and becoming more exciting like this!
When he asked to pick a number from 1 to 10, I picked 7
I got hooked immediately
I love when you guys post on Monday! Thank you ❤️
Considering Fred and the Smosh movie are two comedy films that came out of RUclips, I think Hollywood just saw it as a joke - so this is not what someone would expect.
I think Smosh (under defy) was marketing to a market that Ian and Anthony never wanted to market to, which was the 7-10 so the movie was shown and made for that demo
Another great video guys! Very informative and I appreciate your hard work Colin & Samir 🙏
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS, I fell in love with this video and wanted to here so much more from Wesley. TY!
Appreciate you all bringing insight to the creator economy for all of us creators to better understand and stay informed on what's new.
After so much struggles I now own a new house and my family is happy once again everything is finally falling into place!!
I'm 37 and have been looking for ways to be successful, please how??
Thanks to my co-worker (Alex) who suggested Ms Mary Elizabeth Webb .
She's a licensed broker in the states 🇺🇸
After I raised up to 325k trading with her I bought a new House and a car here in the states also paid for my son's surgery (Oscar). Glory to God.shalom.
Wow that's nice She makes you that much!! please is there a way to reach her services, I work 3 jobs and trying to pay off my debts for a while now!! Please help me.
Speaking of finding content that speaks to a segment of an audience, fills theaters worldwide, sparks the interest of big streaming platforms and cable networks alike, is currently translated in over 50 languages, all while starting out as a small budget crowd funded project… you guys should do a deep dive on the tv series: The Chosen
ive just watched it right now,,, its so good brings so much clarity to life and resonates with my current state., so much love for y'all 🤍
I watched "Nothing except everything" a while back and I was so moved by it. So glad they did this video.
i am so glad you guys interviews him, i was just telling my friends about his success and short film yesterday and today i have a way to listen to him. he universe is reading my mind.
I wish all the success to him and i cant wait for the movie he works on!!!!
7:36 I mean… if you don’t consider A24 a “major studio” then I guess this is true?
Like idk who told Wesley this-or if he just thought it was a fact himself-but the kid that made the “THE BACKROOMS” shorts got a deal with A24 to make a feature literally just last year. And he was *still in* high school and will seemingly still be in high school while directing (17yrs old)
Man I, like a lot of people are just craving for something authenthic for once on this platform, films like those are few and far between.
Itl go down as a one of the most iconic videos on youtube
I remember that thumbnail so much....on one day out of nowhere as how it is with youtube...it showed up in mine....
It’s the best and easiest new way to recruit indie filmmaker. I’m kind of surprised it’s taken this long.
Quinta Brunson is a great example of a RUclipsr that is trailblazing in Hollywood
Отличный пример ребенка который родился в богатой семье*
his stuff is absolutely insane. i literally wanna be in one of his projects just because he strikes a cord with people that i feel like hasn’t been seen for awhile
I just got an ad for The Publish Press before this video and that was such a crazy thing I thought
Seems like the basic equation hasn't changed... you want to be a Hollywood director, spend $50,000 and a year of your life making a short film, then hope that it truly rocks AND everything goes your way afterwards. Samir can do this right now if he really really wants to, but it's definitely not a path open to everyone.
That’s the Kevin Smith formula.
Fantastic story right here!
You guys talked about the new wave, and I totally see the similarities but the pacing of this film reminds me of Gawx's style.
I love this channel, cause I know every video is going to be a quality video. You know there's effort put into it and I kinda miss this in lot's of other channels
It was genuinely awesome short film i have watched recently;
I aspire to work with you one day Wesley!!
wishing the best for you and your dreams
Never heard of his video but I’m here for this convo
I don’t like ads in videos but im definitely tempted to make a bio site, looks so good 😍
I'm sixteen and Wesley and I have interacted before on the internet. So kind, so humble... if any young director deserves to make it big, it's this guy. I hope I get to work with him some day.
You better be prepared to get on your knees boy
i remember i kept getting it recommended to me so after about a month of nonstop being recommended to me i clicked it and it's a pretty good video.
As someone currently making RUclips videos who wants to make movies, I'm very hopeful that more of us will be given a chance in the film industry like this.
watched it yesterday cuz it was on my recommendations ... mind blown .
just the beginning. thanks for making this, can't wait to revisit in the future.
well done
Wesley & Colin & SAMIR ?! What a trio, congrats again Wes:’)
While all of you guy's videos are intriguing and entertaining, this episode is so thought-provoking! I'm also interested to see how conventional media outlets, such as TV, theaters, and streamings, are going to find their ways to converge with creators on the internet, or vice versa. Thanks for your great work, as always!
Been wanting this!!
This is Iconic I watched it with no clue but then I re-watched and re-watched again, I can not wait for the adapted movie. Kudos to Wesley!!
I like these type of videos guys. Keep them coming! ❤
Awesome Video like always C & S. Still waiting for a "Gawx" interview or video about him
Interesting! Enjoyed the perspectives, thank you.
This was one of my fav videos on RUclips! Instantly recognized.
Another great episode. Thanks for covering this cool mini movie.
i hope the bridge keeps bridging because you guys are amazing at what yall do and more people should really see your show
Guys, love the setup and new camera!!!
I knew this video was going to hit it big-time from the first watch. Congrats to Wes!
Saw the thumbnail and was like ya, I need to watch this asap
Rackaracka actually didn’t pitch A24 for financing. They were financed by several small Australian production companies and A24 later bought the distribution rights after it premiered at Sundance. They basically went out and made it themselves hoping to find a distributor later. I think that will be the model that most “RUclipsrs” who want to bridge the gap will have to follow.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
This was a great listen/watch.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing it. ✌️
S/O to The Town! Top tier podcast. Enjoyed this video
I remember watching that video and it being an absolute banger, definitely one of the gems of RUclips you rarely come across.
Thank you guys for sharing this story, probably my favorite video you’ve posted so far!
Also in the film industry horror movies are the cheapest to make that’s why there’s so many made, Fall Guy is an action and will almost always be more expensive. The highest grossing movie with the lowest budget is The Blair Witch project.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
i watched the film 7 months ago when it first came out, and i had noe idea who anyone of the actors were. it was just something i normally wouldnt watch but i really did like it.
7:44 Who else checked their Discord after that notification sound?
Dude I watched this video right after it released and remember sharing it with my friends because of how great I found it. Dude deserves this
I have this strong desire to become a creator, having all of these ideas but lacking the experience to make them a reality. And knowing I am a speck in the RUclips world
You are still special and even if one person resonates with your content, itll be worth it, tell you story!
@@demigreen6495 YOU are truly special, thank you for the encouragement 💜
I have gotten this video in my recommended so many times and now I will never watch it out of principle
wait- i have never seen this video, and feel out of the loop this is so cool to hear about, kinda shows you that viral still doesnt hit everyone's sphere
Mannnn I never watched this but thank you for putting it on my radar guys!
Petition to make Samir's hollywood dreams come true! Y'all are extremely talented too, it's only a matter of time
i love these style of videos from you guys. Darren Aronofsky is one of my three favorite directors, such a crazy story to be recognized by him on RUclips.
Just watched this video yesterday then got this recommendation. Yt algorithm is something else
Saw the thumbnail of this video and got curious, so I went back and watched the short film only to realize I had watched it 7 months ago, when it came out, and commented about how it resonated with me since I am in high school as a senior to which Wesley responded. Insane how I forgot about this, just like how the character in the short asks, is it better to forget or to remember?
had to go back to the original somehow never saw it and it was brilliant.
This is been happening for many many years now. just in case you don´t know. you have for example Fede Álvarez , who did a short film call "Panic Attack", that got Hollywood attention and then end up directiong movies. His latest one is Alien Romulus. Or you have David F. Sandberg (ponysmasher on YT) who did a short call "lights out" and then got to make it as a movie. End up directing The Shazam movies. Andrés Muschietti with the Short "Mama" end up making a movie about it with Guillermo del Toro and then did the IT movies. and I am sure there are many more. This is not new guys. But it's good that you're drawing the attention of new people. Cheers! :)
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hot take - I think you guys could make a hollywood film but in what you guys do best, documentation of the creator lifestyle projects, maybe even Mr. Beast's Amazon series - behind the scenes, the real story. Could imagine watching that on Netflix. Would love to hear your side/perspective of that!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
This is a fascinating look at why Hollywood is failing so hugely/why it can't really save itself! Like all your previous shows this has been a really fascinating & interesting listen. thanks guys!
Yeees! "Talk to me" is another good example for youtubers who made a movie, which is really goood!
Loving the new intro!
I watched some time after it was uploaded and HOLY SHIT THAT WAS THE BEST MOST IMMERSIVE RELATABLE, FANTASTICALLY SHOT, SUPER DEEP CUTTING AND PERFECT PIECE OF MEDIA IVE EVER SEEN ON THIS PLATFORM !!
Really liked the structure of this video, felt a bit different.
Very insightful podcast 🙌
How come no one talks about Kevin Smith and his built in community? He’s an internet / movie crossover. Same with Will Smith who went the other way to RUclips.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Quick clip from Preston Goes, hell yeah.
Never heard of this video, but after watching it, it reminds me of the underrated Wong Fu Productions content from back then
I first saw this on your publish press Email
I watched this movie as it came out and damn, it's so great to see that it blew up! Good luck with the feature film!
Very interesting stuff. It's funny I have my main YT channel that is a great outlet, and then I have my animated TV show that is completely it's own thing. The TV show will happen, but it's all about timing and positioning in the market. Thanks for sharing this guys. Keep going.
this industry news is why I watch y'all
literally watched it yesterday and gasped each time i finished the films he had put
Had to go watch the video. Mind blown.
one thing is to be yourself on youtube 🔥
This is a great video and I believe most of people are joining RUclips nowadays it's the dream they have. I have stories saved on my drive that am writing but am building an audience so that I can one day be Wesley Wang. Thank you for this video its inspirational.
Was arguably the best RUclips video I ever watched
Another banger from Colin and Samir
