I remember my mom jamming this in her '85 Firebird back in '85. Taking me to elementary school and bumping it as I loved every second of it. These girl's threw it down. I'm going on 37 soon but whenever I get ready to go out or something.......this song is 1 of the 1st one's I bump. Love you always MJG.
I remember dancing, specially doing the back step to this track at Ilford town Hall back in the day…😂😂… and another good track was weekend by class action for those of you who know stay knowing😂😂
im 19, and listening to this because i overheard someone singing this at a park. freaking love this positive energy and the beat is beautiful. much better than almost every other song today
Born in 87. I wish I was a teenager during this time. It must've been awesome! But I'm glad I was introduced to this music!! Now my kids listen to it. It will never be forgotten
Wbls and 98.7 kiss fm kept me as a child born in 1988 connected to all generations. I use to hear Rick's music so much I thought It just dropped lol. Dj's back then had integrity and connected everyone. Now they get paid under the table to play anything. It's sad there's really no more genres in our music since all they want to push is this crap they claim to be hip hop.
I was able to watch the Mary Jane girls perform in LA , 2018 at the staples center even though I was 18 at the time I still knew every song because of mom and when she used to play these old jams while doing her make up I love you mother , thank you for showing me such great music . 👌🏼I’m blessed
Avondale Arizona 1985 6-7 years old watching my sisters/aunts get ready , party , drink or just clean up around the house this was one of the go to jams. Working security in the bars 34years later and this is still banging in the bars I work !!💯❤️ #MasterPiece
Chantelles night club was the bomb ,DJ biscuit ,Josh Makawa and the whole crew you made it funk aholic, missed day's 1982-3 and 4 ,RIP The cashmere in Zimbabwe, Brett's Night club .
Could be my age, but this music sure made me HAPPY! STILL DOES!!😄😄 My young son listens to modern music so I listen along. But omg most of it sounds DEPRESSING!!
Choooon! I thought it was just a Nottingham / Derby thing with the special dance? -nobody I've ever spoken to anywhere in the UK, let alone the world knows what I mean when I say the " Candyman" Dance, except those in the East Midlands! This was THE tune to have - it even got re-made by a band called the Fine Young Thngs as the original was costing up to £30 to buy - and this was 1985/6! Big up to my wife, who bought this on U.S import from Arcade Records (R.I.P.) in Nottingham -and had to wait SIX weeks for it! Bless ya for posting it...
I only remember "All night long" from the UK chart (I'm in the south east nr Brighton). The wonder of RUclips has lead me to this. They did some great stuff.
1st single released by the Mary Jane Girls in 1983. Written and produced by the late Rick James. Love this song! Went out and bought the vinyl LP when it was 1st released. Every song is Gr8!
Grew up jammin to this cut.Miss the days. You could turn the radio on back in the days and jam all day long and nite. Now,the music is all based on hip hop and jumpin around like somebody stepped on your foot, lol.Thats too much energy to doin that jive,lol...Hell,I want to swang sometimes!!!
I agree. There's no music diversity anymore. Considering the only two genres that have live instrumentation these days is what's left of Rock and Country music. Jazz, Funk, SOUL, R&B, Disco etc all got absorbed into hip hop and left a lot of great artists and bands unemployed.
1 Of my all time favorite songs! I Love this shit! How on earth can anyone not like this music? i am young 26 years of age and listen to the old school regularly i love that 70s 80s Funky Funk type shit
My parents were born in the early 60's and grew up with this 80s music. Unfortunately, they don't like ANY of the music that wasn't played on their radios (some of Mary Jane Girl's songs like Leather Queen and this) so they don't like it. They only like music that reminds them of their growing up days....
I remember singing and dancing to this song when I was a young girl in L.A. My sister was Jo-Jo 🤗 and I was Cheri Lol We had a girl group.. right in the living room😂.. Child.. we knew we "wuz jammin".. 😂 Good memories. Great music💕

I’m a 90’s baby, but I thank my parents for putting me up on game.. ❤ I’ll never forget wanting to keep my dad’s MJ girls CD and he said no 😭 and when we’d drive, bobbin my little head to the Gap Band lol (because how can you NOT?) music from back then just hits different, it’s like you can literally feel it
They don't make music like this anymore. Simple, sweet & to the point. Music that you don't have to figure out. Not too vulgar, music that makes you & a bunch of friends hanging out, feel real good.
Well, here it is! You know, of course since AT LEAST the 1920s Mary Janes really IS a longtime trademarked name for molasses/peanut butter candy. (And NO pot included, either! Nor little girls shoes..) Coincidentally in candy and music, the current owner, American longtimer Necco of Revere, Mass. also markets the swing band Squirrell Nut ipper's namesake candy, similar to the Mary Janes (but not until after the band became a success, and yes, SNZ based their band name with permission of the candy company..Mary Jane is such a generic name....:))
+Steve Carras Rick James was a pothead and it was well known back then. The Mary Jane Girls were named after marijuana aka Mary Jane. They were a protege of Rick James.
Thanks to my grandma i like listening to this type of music. Back then the music was so cheerful and had a pretty good tempo as well. Good party music too. Tbh Pandora 80's music channel brought me here. Has to be my favorite channel on there besides west coast hip hop.
This was a jam in 1983 when I was 32! Still a jam at age 70!
