Edward G. Robinson on Batman

  • Probably the most esteemed performer to appear in a Batman window cameo was the legendary actor Edward G. Robinson. Robinson, a noted art collector, takes a veiled swipe at Andy Warhol (the "canned tomato soup" remark). Batman name drops Picasso and Dali to prove he's hip.

Edward G. Robinson was a tremendous talent. Even here he is top notch. Watch him in Key Largo. It’s an unbelievably great film.

    Edward G. Robinson...
Smooth as silk, even in campy cameos. Gotham never had it so good.
When this guy played evil, it was like broken glass down the nape of your neck.
And you never wanted it to stop.

I don't remember this cameo from the Batman show (I was finishing high school during the couple of years the show was on), but I remember Edward G. Robinson doing a coffee commercial in 1967. He was urbane and sophisticated, a truly elegant gentleman who praised and recommended the coffee for it's taste and quality, etc. Then right at the last few seconds, he abruptly changes character and growls "Now do it MY way, SEE?" then immediately changes back, smiles and says "You'll like it." There's nobody around today even remotely like him. And I can't remember the brand of the coffee...

Instant Maxwell House Coffee. (It's on the 'tube.) Now, if you want a real trip, view the earliest commercials for Lipton Instant Tea. (Iced tea? Wouldn't think of it!)

It seems hard to believe it, but...Edward G. Robinson somehow managed to encapsulate my thoughts on Andy Warhol pretty expertly in his conversation with the building climbing Dynamic Duo. And my brain hurts just thinking that.

Loved the classic "climbing the walls" cameos on Batman! I looked up Edward G Robinson because I heard his voice was the inspiration for Chief Wiggum on The Simpsons (or actually Mel Blanc doing his impression of EGR). Listening to him I can definitely hear the Wiggum inspiration.

Edward G Robinson-Star of numerous Gangster Pictures from back in the day, With titles like Little Ceasar and Kid Galahad. He also costarred with Charlton Heston in a couple of films-The Ten Commandments and Soylent Green. He was the original choice to play Dr. Zaius in Planet of the Apes, But dropped out because he felt Claustrophobic under the ape makeup.

"Canned tomato soup is to eat, not to frame and hang up on a wall." @ 0:44 . Even though I hate tomato soup, my thoughts EXACTLY on the latter. You see cans of tomato soup all the time at the grocery store, but how and why Andy Warhol chose that as one of his subjects, I do not know, I'll never know. I mean, for one thing, there's a slight tear in the label of the can. In other words, the status quo around us could use a little shaking up. I can see where Warhol was coming from, but why a can of tomato soup as that subject???? It gets boring, whether among Warhol's collection or in the store for that matter. Anyways, I've seen better from the "cubist" school that was just mentioned (and besides, that was more Bruce Wayne talking, even in costume). Oh well, screams Warhol anyway, with all the loud colors used in Seasons 2 and 3 of the show😕 But Edward G. Robinson was Romanian AND Jewish, and I actually happen to be Romanian, born and raised here the US (though not Jewish), seriously, IDK, so great minds DO think alike LOL 😆

they filmed those scenes so cheap because all they did was flip the scenery to the side. in reality they're just walking on normal ground. edward g robinson did his part by popping out of a window in the floor. notice how in every batman where someone confronts them on the side of the building they hold the window open with one hand.
