Food inflation is 10-30% in Malaysia compared to pre-pandemic period. This is the same, or slightly higher than in many other countries. The only fortunate thing is fuel and electricity have been highly subsidized since 2021, when oil prices shot up. But even with such high subsidies, food inflation is as high as elsewhere. Apparently some people have been suffering less, because they increased their pay at the expense of other consumers, who should theoretically suffer less because of the high subsidies, but they suffer as much as those elsewhere.
Perhaps this is why some say the country is "fortunate". Those who hold this view typically come from the group that holds pricing power (monopolies, providers of essential services like food sellers at commercial areas etc).
