    It's no coincidence the Dutch and the English were the first to translate Aristotle's Nichomachean ethics in the 13th c.

    a trading hub and suddently the invention of the contract between a group of financiers and an entrepreneur.
    A contract with a mission, money, and a deadline.

    Florence (Italy) was a major financial and commercial center during the Renaissance, the Medici family in particular, so before Amsterdam.

      As were Genua and Venice slightly before that. But the point he makes and many historians before him, that the focal point of commerce shifted from northern Italy to the cities of Holland and Zeeland, via the cities of Flanders.
