The Infamous "5K Rattle" .. Another CRF300L Recall?

  • When I revealed my CRF300L on the channel I had received a comment talking about the "5k rattle". At the time I had no idea what he was talking about but a quick Google search revealed an issue that a lot of riders were complaining about with their bikes, a rattling noise around 5000 rpm's. Sure enough, I was a victim as well. So in today's video we talk about the problem and what I think it is.
    Should Honda fix this?

Most all aluminum DOHC engines will exhibit vibrations and rattles at specific RPM’s due to harmonics and frequencies. Aluminum is very acoustically conductive. Just keep sending it. :-)

I bought mine new in 13 when they first came out. It’s never had a recall that I know of. It’s been VERY abused since day one. I’ve never had a single issue with it. It’s still bone stock minus a 13 tooth front sprocket and handle bar risers.
Lots of off-roading in Florida, Georgia, river crossings (under water once still never skipped a beat), in the mountains out west, Death Valley, Arizona, Grand Canyon and now in the Midwest. I’ve still never had the spark plug out. It now has 5,000 miles on it (hurt my back and it sat for a few years) and i do notice a rattle in that rpm range, basically at cruise I’ll notice it. It is annoying but I think it’s just due for a valve adjustment/tune up. It’s been through the ringer. Other than that it’s not really abnormal. Older thumpers are way noisier. Although when it was new it was incredibly quiet. I now also use it as a commuter. Usually 30miles a day, almost all country. I still just love this bike. There are bigger badder bikes out there, but I don’t think there’s very many this dependable. It reminds me of z50’s and Cubs (which I also have in the stable), just anvil like reliability.
In your 300l review video a lot of the issues you have with it I had with my 250l. But I think it really just broke in this year. Everything suspension and handling wise feels much better now than the day I bought it. And the seat finally broke in. I always thought it lacked kind of everywhere, but i found out that the bike is more capable than I am, even more now. I think Honda really nailed it with this bike.

I now have a 2021 300L that does it. I'm not going to worry about it. I bought my 300 a couple weeks ago and haven't even put my break-in miles on it yet... Great bike so far. For the pipe stand, as an alternative to a 14” piece of pipe it may be easier to source two 6” pieces and one coupler. The coupler adds some length so that you are really close to 14” in total length. In this case it’s funny math where 6” + 6” = ~14”. Good luck building the stand and creating the video.

Many cars and trucks have a 'rattle' since the exhaust has been improved. Most are so quiet now that you will hear valve trains, ticks, lifters, and even the fuel injectors. My 03 Exploder doesn't make a sound under the hood because all you can hear is the horrid stock exhaust. It is loud enough to cover any engine noise. My wife's 2016 Escape (now totaled after 38k miles), has a horrific sound because at idle there is no real exhaust noise. I can hear the lifters, valves, and fuel injectors ticking away. When we first got it - it was alarming!
I personally wouldn't worry about this supposed 'issue' with the CR300L, you can hear weird noises on other bikes, and let me just say that if you think the CRF300L 'rattle' is bad, you should listen to an old XR250 with a louder exhaust. You can hear all kinds of odd little sounds coming from inside that engine but the darn things will run damn near forever.

Great little bike. Guess what. It developed the rattle. I just thought, well, it ain't only Honda. I just purchased the 300L Rally. If it develops the rattle I'm going to call it character. Obviously if it was serious I think Honda would have noticed by now and taken care of the issue.

I live in Asia, and they have this problem too. Not on the 250/300 engines though, probably because not too many people buy them here, but they happen on the 150 engines. Either the cb150, cbr150, or the crf 150l. Official honda service centre mechanics have heaps of guessings on whats wrong but none of them seem to really deal with the problem. At the end of the day, people figured that it doesnt really affect the performance of the bike, and decided to just forget about it. Maybe they were right, a honda is a honda where ever it is.

Here in Greece wrong have noticed that a lot of engines from trusted brands like honda or yamaha, have problems with their engines, even when you are not actively trying to destroy them. But someone found out if you make the engine take it slowly at first(for 300-600 miles) we go with low RPM and low throttle and then slowly we go with more RPM and more throttle trying to destroy them a bit more until the 600 miles mark. Then we use them as we would use them normally, some people are actively trying to destroy them, other taking care of them. But they all have one similarity after that procedure, the engines don't really wanna break. An old man gave me his old yamaha townmate 50 1980 model, it haven't started a single time for since 2001 and after 3 kicks it was running, I am actively trying to destroy it, and it doesn't wanna break.
You should actually try to not destroy your engine at first and make it slowly adapt.

Hi, do you have any news on what is causing the 5k rattle?

  • @guzziguy2011

Speaking for those of us who tend to “worry”, do so because of fear of being stranded in the middle of nowhere, because the CRF300L Rally specifically, is made for getting out of town, minimally. As someone who does 200-500 mile days, the last thing I wanna deal with is a roadside repair at best, or an early evening stay at a hotel whilst my unit gets towed to the nearest service shop. That said, the history of this bike seems to dictate all will be ok with the 5K Rattle, but just because it’s “Honda”, doesn’t make it bullet proof.

    Off topic but here goes.
Good informative video and nice wheelies.
I see you have over 70K subscribers and no doubt have some influence over many of them.
My concern is your riding without full protective gear. It sets a very bad example for your viewers.
I have been riding for 54 years, mostly dirt and dual sport.
About 7 years ago, I hit a patch of loose gravel on my DR-650 on a 35mph downhill “S” turn. It happened so quickly that I remembered later thinking “why is the sky above my right shoulder?”
I was still in normal riding position when I impacted the pavement. It seemed like I slid forever.
I immediately jumped up and checked for injuries. I had one small scratch on the knob of my left wrist. I was not even sore the next day.
I was fully “geared up” with a one piece chest, back, shoulder, elbow and lower arm protector. I was also wearing a full coverage MX helmet, MX gloves, padded riding pants and MX boots.
There is a good reason that accidents are called that. They are always unplanned.
Please encourage all riders to wear “all the gear all the time (ATGATT). One day you will be thankful you did.

I’m sure other people are thinking it, but I’ll say it….no one asked for your opinion. This is America, the land of the free. People have the choice to wear equipment, smoke, drink and do all kinds of stuff that’s not good for their health. Snoop Dog has millions of followers. A lot are kids. Yet he’s open about smoking weed. Are you concerned about that too? If more people were concerned about themselves instead of others, this word would be a much better place. If this guy eats shit and becomes a vegetable, that’s his choice. I’m sure he knows all the risks. I’m sure his viewers do as well

With how quiet exhausts have gotten engines sound like they are tearing themselves apart at times. Valve Lash, Fuel injectors, Cam chains the list goes on. Engines just make noise and the exhausts are no longer drowning out the sounds. My 2020 R3 made random clicking & squeaking noises on decel, Versus 2020 X300 has cam Chain rattle between 2-4k rpm, 2004 Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 made tons of steady lifter noise if you listened for it, and my current 2022 MT-07 has valve clatter and cam Chain noise around 3-5K RPM. My friends KTM 1290 Adventure is constantly rattling, Cars make very similar concerning sounds if you really pay attention. Point being no engine is made the same and 1 might be very quiet and another sound like a Change purse even if it's the same exact model, it doesn't mean anything is wrong sometimes "strange" noises mean it's running properly!

My van rattles like all hell sometimes. I've gone over every inch of it and nothing is out of place or broken so i learned to live with it. Things rattle, things make noises.. Hell, even our bodies do it from time to time (a nice click in your knees when bending down lol). As long as everything is in its right place and it works as intended it's the sort of thing i'd rather just ignore.

I have a 300l and I have the rattle. I have around 650 miles on it. It bothers me, simply because it's new and making a noise. Lol. I talked to the dealer and they said they haven't had any complaints. So I hope mine goes away with a few more miles.

I bought one in the Philippines and I found this video because mine was rattling like crazy and I had not heard about it yet. It sounds like detonation to me but now that I know they all do it, I won’t worry about it. I cannot see Honda rolling with it if they thought this were a serious issue as this bike is worldwide and inexpensive so it will sell well and quite a lot of warranty expenses if it were a real issue. I am running premium fuel but who knows what the actual octane is for it here in Philippines. I may get one of the bores opes just to see if there are any sign of detonation over the long haul.

I noticed a vibration around 5k first day. Didn’t love it, but it was paid for already, and it didn’t really bother me. I thought, “that’s the way it is. That vibration up my butt happened on a Yamaha T-max, and I didn’t buy it.

Mine even started making the noise while sitting at a traffic light. Kind of annoying, I assume it is the cam chain tensioner or something. Just rattles for a couple of seconds, then stops. 250L

  • @heynow3788
    @heynow3788 2 года назад +1

My `20 250L makes that noise. Not sure it's any better or worse after 1400 miles, but I'm not concerned about it. A 250cc single is bound to have some strange vibes/harmonics somewhere in the Rev range, especially when you're not under much of a load. Many other engines make similar noises. It's possible that this is mainly a paranoia based issue more than anything else.

I hear ya! (It?) I got that rattle on my new CRF300L too. The more I read, the better I feel about it. Kinda reminds me of an old ‘73 2-stroke Yam 175 Enduro I had with a nasty sloppy piston knock! Lol
      Really lovin my new ride!

  • @jeffh4015

The rattle is something I unfortunately noticed right away after getting the 300L new...glad I got it new or I would have been allot more concerned about the noise, but it does slightly annoy me since the noise occurs worst right at a typical street cruising speed (5th gear @ ~60km/h). Not the end of the world though but I do see why it is talked about so much. I'm at about 1500km already did the first service and mine hasn't gone away unfortunately as yours seems to have. Maybe I have to up my wheelie game lol! 2 things I've noticed though: the noise doesn't occur until the bike is warmed up, and noise doesn't occur unless moving (if you sit still in neutral and hold the RPMs up, no rattle at all). To me definitely sounds like an engine related noise but I'm not sure why it would only occur while moving then? In the end, must be normal if everyone has it I guess!

From day one I heard the noise. Sounds like bad gas, piston slap, or chain slap... but definitely right at 5000k. Took it to the dealer and they acted dumb and treated me the same. I was told to buy better gas... premium non-ethanol. I was using non-ethanol regular. Premium did very little... in performance or noise cancellation. I tried to find what Honda recommends to no avail. Guess I should have looked it up here so I could have shown them these posts. I don't feel quite as dumb now. Thanks.

I dont know if i found the solution for every one but it worked for me after cheeking every wild theory and found nothing to pin that rattle i was convince it came for the engine most likely the timing chain and then i noticed the driving chain was a little lose so i adjusted it and NO MORE dog on rattle ! hope this help.

I heard someone once say it was the reed valve in the EGR emissions garbage. He said once he removed it that it went away. It's not a critical moving part in the engine. And there's little to no performance gain in removing it. So there's probably no reason for concern... Just send it
