I remember when my dogs were watching a nature documentary with me and my dad. Being Rhodesian Ridgebacks, a hunting dog, they actually started peeking behind the TV as if they were hunting. It was really interesting!!
Awesome. My dog is glued to the TV when we watch at dinner!! Goes nuts when he sees or hears dogs barking even remembers the commercial and barks when he hears the jingle!!!
My cat definitely watches tv, but she's more interested when animals are on the screen or when there are animal noises. She's sitting on me now and just watched this video. I bet she's judging you.
Well, technically we only see a very limited spectrum of light too, so ... Some species other can distinguish ultraviolet light, and might be wondering about the poor chromatically challenged humans who can only see a paltry 10 million colours. It's just a matter of perspective. :)
I used to have a Sheltie that would bark consistently at the stained-glass image of a cat that was seen at at dog's-eye-level in the floor-to-ceiling window of a vet's office. Being stained glass, the image was quite an abstraction, which makes this especially surprising. The same dog would bark at various types of stuffed-animals seen in the distance. I'm pretty sure this particular dog was able to visually discern abstract representations of animals.
My dog loved certain TV shows obviously very into nature documentaries but the one weird one I never got was trains. Genuinely you would stick a train video on RUclips on and he would get super stoked about it especially if it blew its horn could never get why but dam did he love him some trains. That and certain little kids shows.
Yeah, our dog liked a lot of kids shows-- we'd leave that channel on for him during the day. My (totally spitballing) theory is that it's something to do with the higher pitched voices-- I've read that the reason people kind of instinctively use a "baby" voice with kids and pets is because they actually respond more to those higher-pitched vocalizations (more brain activity or something). So yeah, baby talk is annoying, but there's a biological basis for it, and kids shows have more of those high, energetic voices, presumably to keep the kid's attention.
I saw a video of a large dog sitting on the edge of his seat on the couch next to his owner. He was watching a football game that seemed intense. I could tell bc the dog was riveted and was almost shaking in anticipation when it happened HIS TEAM GOT A TOUCHDOWN! It was mayhem in the room but the best part was the dog. He absolutely recognized what was happening so when it happened, he flung himself up in wild abandon yelping with joy. I thought maybe he picked up on latent clues from his owner next to him. While it appears that they both reacted at the same time, upon many views though the dog actually gives the clues to the human. You can see her momentarily swivel confused why the dog was losing his mind. It was so fast and her reaction seemed simultaneous with her dog which made it more hilarious. I suggest you try to find it under "dog watches football" or something like it. You won't be disappointed.
My rabbit seems to enjoy watching tv so much that she often times thumps if I turn it off. Although, that probably has more to do with the sound than the imagery.
Makes me sad that so many dogs were bred to do certain jobs, but now they find themselves unemployed and have to settle for a living room couch instead of a lake or prairie lol
such a hard life, being fed every day, rubbed on the belly and sleeping almost whole day, truly a horrible and stressful life wolfs would never choose for themselves /s
What is even more sad (and horrible) to me is that there are lots of different dogs that were bred for the sole purpose of being tiny and cute. Things like chihuahuas and pugs and pomeranians.. I think they're hideous. Not to mention that lots of these "toy dogs" have have very short snouts, which is completely unnatural for a dog and it makes breathing for them difficult. At least those dogs you mention weren't bred to have disgusting genetic deformities.
Herding dogs LOVE what they do - they're tireless runners, and it's a social job. They were bred to enjoy certain things they are good at, and to be the best breed at doing that thing. Not all selective breeding is bad. Making pug noses so short that they suffer with breathing difficulties, just for aesthetics? Now that's cruel.
The refresh rate is what matters most, not the frame rate. The difference is refresh rate is a strobing effect (at least with the old CRTs or LED-backlit displays), while the frame rate affects the "choppiness" of the animation. So for humans, a 60Hz display with a 60FPS animation will look the same as a 120Hz display at 60FPS. Besides, most TV shows and movies are recorded at ~24FPS, which dogs seem to be ok with.
Not a single mention of cats? My cat and my old roommate's cat LOVED watching nature documentaries on TV. And not anything particularly prey related; Walking with Dinosaurs/Monsters were BIG hits with them. Roommates cat would follow animals around the screen, very accurately, too. My cat follows them, but more generally, and knows that it doesn't work like a window, so he doesn't move his head as much. I have video somewhere on my IG acct where I'm folding laundry and Scully and Bebop are intently glued to the TV at the foot of my bed. Any info on cats watching TV, SciShow???
My dog will watch ANY screen! She's half Aussie Shepherd and half Blue Heeler - both herding dogs. She really likes certain shows, and has to protect us from the Prevagen Jelly fish! No jelly fish! Not in her house! She has to be right there to watch Jeopardy with us ; )
Every time a Liberty Mutual commercial is on, my dog goes nuts and barks hysterically at it (like it's a threat). Wish to the dog god we knew what caused the trigger to start.
My dog is kinda weird in the TV regard, she will only watch tv if I’m watching DBZ abridged and vegeta comes on. She won’t pay attention to anything else even me when vegeta comes on.
I guess dogs would love to watch a 3 hours looped special of: WHO IS A GOOD DOGGY, YOU ARE, YES YOU ARE, YES YOU ARE, WHERE IS THE BALL, BRING THE BALL, WHO IS A GOOD DOGGY, YOU ARE ...
So interesting about the screen rate 60x per second thing. My son went to a projector on a big wall movie thing a few years ago (probably around when this video was made) and he was extremely frustrated about the slow screen rate, describing it like a flip book or strobe light. No one else noticed or cared. He came home saying “That couldn’t have been more than 40-50 frames per second! Good way to make a good movie garbage!” He’s definitely human - I’m not a “dog mom”. I did just get a puppy though, for the first time. Ok, so admit I AM going through a little empty nest thing right now. I am worried that any tv watching will hurt my puppy’s eyes. :)
We had a dog that loved watching certain TV shows and it did extend to at least one animated show-- a kids cartoon with puppies as the characters. It also had lots of barking-type sounds, though, so that could be what drew him. He was actually a daschund, so a hound-type dog, but boy did he love his "dog soaps" (as my mom called them). If he heard one of his favorites on the TV, barks or no barks, he'd come rushing in the room. We'd leave it on the kids channel for him during the day since that was his favorite.
I have a cat (actually two) and i was watching ClickSpring-video couple weeks ago with the cat next to me and noticed he was *very* interested in the video! Constant stare and when there were gears and stuff rotating on the screen, his eyes widened and he was very attentive :) I had to put another video after that and same thing! Man, that was fun to see :D
my cat may not respond to cat videos but responds strongly to mouse videos. as long as there no scenes and cuts, but rather a long take, she thinks its real and she becomes fixed on the monitor. try it out!
It's so weird to me how dogs are only really seeing yellows, browns and blues. You'd think evolution would've demanded everything be able to discern red and green. Plants, berries, blood, etc.
Well I think bird will look at us and think it is weird that we only see the colors we see and not all the once they can see. (They have 4 diffident color receptors and can see more in the uv and ir spectrum) With out sarcasm, I think nature had it so that everyone can see what he needs to see and not die.
Evolution is weird, Dog's see what they need to as carnivores. certain types of animals learned to see UV spectrum so that they can avoid predators, but man do I wish that we could see more colors than we can because then we'd be able to figure out a heck of alot more about what they actually do compared to our understanding of them just being there.
@@busimagen , are you making a case for 'Red'? One might think that there is an advantage to seeing red because red blood means 'fresh meat' to carnivores.
My mother's ~4 year old female Cocker Spaniel loves TV. She uses her eyes surprisingly much. I've never seen a dog stop and stare for a prolonged amount of time at the moon, like she was wondering, or trying to figure out what it was. Last time I saw her watching TV, she was very deeply engaged in watching a cheetah hunt for food. Dogs are fun. :D
I caught one of my dogs stealing the food from the dish of another dog tonight, he has been trying to steal his food now for about 2 weeks. This is after YEARS that they have been eating from their own unique and separate bowls. I told him that not all dogs go to heaven and that if he keeps it up he will be one of those that doesn't.

My girl likes watching soap operas, (most soap operas work even in black and white) the news is very interesting to her and she likes cooking shows. The thing I think I've determined is that she likes watching the humans talking (with the exception of the golf ball)
I love how the only anecdote in the whole of Sci Show has something to do with an animal we love. It's not great science, but it's great people...which is great :D
My cats like to watch me on the computer. Quick mouse/cursor movements especially excite them. So does lots of visual change. They really like watching Minecraft for example. Putting down a light source like a torch gets their attention, or big changes in color between indoors and outdoors. Also, the particles and drops get their attention as they move fast and spin around.
We occasionally catch our JRT just sitting and watching TV. He's especially interested in watching wolves. But one day I was watching a video of a howling puppy on my laptop and he put his forehead against the screen to try and see. When he was a puppy himself, though, he responded best to pictures of white horses since he himself has long legs and is mostly white. He can definitely make out videos really well even with the comparatively bad frame rate.
My brother's dog loves the TV. She flips out any time an animal pops up. It's hilarious and adorable (except when she gets too excited and jumps at the TV lol.)
my family’s dog cooper is a cairn westie. she loves to bark at the tv, especially any sorts of animals. so whenever i would leave the house i would turn on cartoon network so that she had something to keep her company, but wasn’t losing her mind at any live action animals. we have the flat screen in front of the sliding glass door to the backyard. sometimes cooper will look behind the tv stand or look outside to see where the chimps from the animal documentary were
There are youtube videos that advertise themselves as for cats. I put one on one christmas for my sisters cats; they were immediately engrossed by a video of a squirrel finding food on a forest floor. They were pushing their noses closer and closer to the screen, I didn't even think they could focus that close. It was so funny lol.
We had a terrier mongrel who loved to play football (soccer). He also liked to watch it on tv. Whenever the ball went out of screen, he'd run round the back of the telly to find the ball. 1960s, free standing telly, not nailed to the wall, like most today.
Doesnt old lightbulb flicker 50 times per sec? (50Hz) so based on this we should see the flicker but we dont...is it coz of "slow" cooling of the bulb in the off faze?
It flickers at the rate of the AC current powering it, when the current reverses, the power stops flowing temporarily. So it flickers at 50 or 60 Hz. The filament doesn't have time to cool off that much, barely at all in an incandescent. Older or cheap LED bulbs the flicker is much more noticable, it won't put out any light when the polarity is reversed. Better quality LED lights use various methods of preventing flicker by having pairs of LEDs with opposing polarities or smoothing capacitors to emulate DC current, or go with full blown DC converters.
50 Hz power goes to zero at 100 times per second, so old incandescents have flicker at 100 or 120 times per second. That flicker is very small because the filament takes time to cool.
It's really entertaining to put a video of birds and squirrels on for the cat, the movements and noises get her in the kind of looking out the window mode. Not full hunting, but really trained in on watching the prey.
dogs dont "get" animation in the sense of understanding what it represents, and no they dont understand mirrors either. thats not to say a particular dog wouldnt watch animation just because some detail or movement catches its eye tho
Lots of adult humans still fail to understand that animation isn't always for children. It's not like Mickey Mouse looks even remotely like a rodent. But we watch and listen to his antics. Why woulnd't a dog do the same?
My Beagle loved to watch cartoons, I may not be able to understand why but I would turn on the TV some days and she would jump up on the couch while I walked out of the room. and just sit there staring at the TV.
One of my favourite moments was when my greyhound tore from the back of the house to our living room and searched behind every speaker for the Logan’s Run cats.
My guinea pig love computer games for toddlers - it's squeeky, there's a mouse moving, and she loves it! She even has her favorite game. She's not that interested in one, where you just click on a trumpet, or a drum, or a rubber duck and it makes sound, but she loves one where you ride a car and collect stuff. She also loves watching netflix The big bang theory, The Flash and The Arrow
I've had a few dogs - but Chong was a Pomeranian that would bark at the TV when he saw horses and other animals - Example- HBO Rome- he doesn't pay attention until one of the characters comes out on a white horse. Dog goes nuts. Christmas Vacation- barks and goes nuts following the screen when the dog in the movie is on screen. There were other things he did others didn't - he would jump from our deck onto a floating raft in an above ground pool with a deck built around it, chill on the raft, then jump off hours later when it floated by the deck again. Chong died 4 months ago at 18 years old. He definitely liked TV more than most other dogs...
My dog seems to react more to sounds on screen than full out video. She will react to dog barks or whines on TV. She even reacted to a reel on my phone when it was hyenas attacking a lion lol

I... I can't talk to my own mother.
Cujo That's actually quite cute
Tell her that god took colors from them, but gave them their awesome noses, so they can perceive a reality that no human can!
Cujo It's a bit of give and take. Fewer cones for color vision allows for more rods for night vision. You can't have everything...
Its god's punishment for being butt sniffing hedonist.
Well, technically we only see a very limited spectrum of light too, so ... Some species other can distinguish ultraviolet light, and might be wondering about the poor chromatically challenged humans who can only see a paltry 10 million colours. It's just a matter of perspective. :)

I want to see Sci Show Dogs :D
This is the my first time watching this guy out of genuine curiostiy, rather than a school science project
Let's list the dog-hosts of SciDogs! Michael, Olivia, Hank, and Brad?
I thought the last one was Stefan.
Hanks by far my favorite host
Well that's decided it! I'm gonna buy the 70 inch High frame rate 4K Ultra HD TV for my dog
I am going to hold you to that "scishow for dogs". That would be ridiculously awesome.
I’m supposed to be studying now
My brother's dog loves the TV. She flips out any time an animal pops up. It's hilarious and adorable (except when she gets too excited and jumps at the TV lol.)
DogShow!!
SciDog!!
My cat really enjoyed this episode. She even liked the video for me! 😸
What about cat? - asking for a friend
Paradoxical Nightmare a study was done and found out most cats don’t care about their owners
my family’s dog cooper is a cairn westie. she loves to bark at the tv, especially any sorts of animals. so whenever i would leave the house i would turn on cartoon network so that she had something to keep her company, but wasn’t losing her mind at any live action animals.
we have the flat screen in front of the sliding glass door to the backyard. sometimes cooper will look behind the tv stand or look outside to see where the chimps from the animal documentary were
Do a follow up with cats?
There are youtube videos that advertise themselves as for cats. I put one on one christmas for my sisters cats; they were immediately engrossed by a video of a squirrel finding food on a forest floor. They were pushing their noses closer and closer to the screen, I didn't even think they could focus that close. It was so funny lol.

awww the cute olivia dog
We had a terrier mongrel who loved to play football (soccer). He also liked to watch it on tv. Whenever the ball went out of screen, he'd run round the back of the telly to find the ball. 1960s, free standing telly, not nailed to the wall, like most today.
Make scishow dogs
R e a l
My dog loves tv and will watch pretty much anything, especially cartoons, probably because of all of the sounds
Whoops, yeah, I flubbed the math on that. >_
Idaho Spud
Which also explains why fluorescent lights, which lack the hot filament, don’t flicker too much.
Most TV is at 24 to 30hz, so I don't know wtf they were talking about anyways. 60hz video content hasn't caught on, too many people find it weird.
I am desperate to see SciShow DogShow. Who's a good presenter! YOU'RE a good presenter!
What about cats?
They're like dogs, but better lol
About the same
It's really entertaining to put a video of birds and squirrels on for the cat, the movements and noises get her in the kind of looking out the window mode. Not full hunting, but really trained in on watching the prey.
From what I know of cat biology, it's roughly the same.
They don't care one way or the other.
This is the kind of content I’m here for
Wait.. dogs have access to abstract thought? I didn't think they even understood mirrors. That's wild to claim they "get" animation.
zeabeth are you serious? This comment is golden.
dogs dont "get" animation in the sense of understanding what it represents, and no they dont understand mirrors either. thats not to say a particular dog wouldnt watch animation just because some detail or movement catches its eye tho
Do YoU kNoW dA wEy?
Concentrated Clorox Bleach I no da way
I always find it funny when dogs get excited when they see another dog on TV
My guinea pig love computer games for toddlers - it's squeeky, there's a mouse moving, and she loves it! She even has her favorite game. She's not that interested in one, where you just click on a trumpet, or a drum, or a rubber duck and it makes sound, but she loves one where you ride a car and collect stuff. She also loves watching netflix The big bang theory, The Flash and The Arrow
I know that the "dog show" is a joke but pleeeeeaseeeee do it for April fools like that would be the best video ever !!! DOGS DOGS DOGS DOGS YESSSSSS
She even reacted to a reel on my phone when it was hyenas attacking a lion lol
seriously such a good question Elaine
That thumbnail is the best thing I've seen all day XD
