I find the series very interesting given that we see your immediate reactions to these, often times brand new, guitars. In my opinion they are helpful as these videos demonstrate a quick method of inspection that appears to be rather foolproof. Thank you and keep up the great work!
Before you slam Epiphone for crappy fretwork on the Explorer, you might want to set the guitar up properly before you "diagnose" high frets. You mentioned the neck was really straight, which likely means that the neck has too little relief...and not enough relief will in many cases cause buzzing in the lower fret region. Rule of thumb: Buzzing on lower frets = not enough neck relief...buzzing on high frets = string action too low. You cannot determine if frets are too high or low until a proper setup is done. I have seldom seen a guitar properly set up straight out of the box from the factory. So before making blanket statements about the fretwork which may unfairly turn some people off to the prospect of buying the guitar, I'd reserve my conclusions about playability until after it's been on the bench and had a decent setup. I really dig your channel and am a subscriber as well, but you need to avoid hasty conclusions. A lot of non-guitar-tech-savvy people take your statements at face value.

I used to work for a big guitar store, epiphone just send the guitars on a big pallet stacked up with around 20-30 guitars per pallet, only shipped with the normal box and clean filmed around all the boxes. We had many guitars arrived damaged over the years!
I bought a new Les Paul at Guitar Center this week, and the first Gibson case they brought out for it had a padding bulge nearabouts the neck joint that prevented the guitar from laying flat and the lid from closing. 😆
It could have been a lack of neck relief that's causing the buzzing at the 5-7 frets on the Explorer. Check that there is no back bow before dressing the frets.
Put a straight edge on the fret board, and make sure there is a little relief in the neck. If they are all fretting out at the 5th fret, then chances are the truss rod is too tight. Back it off a quarter turn and put new strings on it. It won't fret out anymore. You shouldn't ever have to file the frets on a new guitar.
That is not true at all. Many lowe and mid priced guitars have fret sprout and high frets that need a level right out of the box. I have actually seen some high priced guitars that even could use a level out the box. It def happens.
Space Alien no doubt it can happen. You're right. Just thinking it might be a back bend if they're all bottoming out in the same spot, and near the middle of the neck like that.
That Explorer is identical to the one I purchased during Christmas 2008. I only kept it less than 4years (to August 2012). It was killer, but after I got to New York City and was sharing a pad with 3 others, that particular guitar had become a novelty that just took up space.
Thanks for the nod. Looking forward to your Firebird arriving now. I just really want you to do a Firebird, you're missing out on a truly different Gibson. They're great!
I work at a guitar store in the UK. Don't know if it differs from the US, but Gibson and Epiphone arrive on big plastic wrapped pallets from Gibson's own courier. Any extra packaging would have been done by the store you ordered from
Bit late on this, but I used to work for a haulage firm and we had a contract to deliver Fender family brands and they just used to stack and wrap to a pallet. Can't say what the pack job was like as all I used to see was a mixed pallet(s) full of Fender, EVH, Jackson etc. going to guitar shops in the UK such as PMT, GAK and Andertons.
Another nice unboxing! And yes Gibson USA having their cases made in China is just ridiculous...haha. Btw. will you be unboxing and reviewing some of the new Epiphone semi/hollow bodies? Thanks
Yeah here's a $3000 USA made guitar in a Chinese case I wonder if these new Chinese Gibson cases have that stanky off gassing that most Chinese made cases tend to have... At least one can still get the tkl prestige cases for around the same price as the Gibson cases for those of us who bought a Gibson that only came with a gig bag
@@SgtPnkks I bought one of the first Gibsons with China cases (September 2019) and felt rippedoff a little at first, but it's actually not that bad, it has that Gibson vanilla smell to it. I think they make them in the same factory as the Epiphone ones, but they're certainly higher quality (have an Epiphone as well)...
I watched"Guitar Max"unbox his yellow one. I had an original candy apple red one back in the day. I received a settlement from an accident. I went to the music store and purchased"the candy apple red'Strat'(which I eventually gave to my father and I get to play when I go to his house but it's still a great guitar I love that font on the headstock. The second guitar I purchased on the same day was a"pink Peavey Adrian Vandenberg signature model"that guitar is long gone traded away. The "Strat"was an impulse buy for me. I was looking inside of Guitar player magazine, I saw a photograph of Tony Macalpine playing a white one. I just thought that it looks like such a nice guitar. I loved the way that it said "strat" on the headstock with the black behind it.... That's the reason I bought mine...,😋
First tune the guitar! Try loosening the truss rod 1/4 turn on the Epiphone Explorer. It may not be high frets. Don’t just eyeball the neck relief, put a capo on the first fret, hold down the low e string at the 14th fret and see I you can slide a very thin pick under the low e at the 7 th fret. Watch a Stew Mac Video on measuring neck relief. If it still buzzes, then use the fret rocker to see if there are indeed high frets. You can’t take a new guitar out of the box, experience buzzing and assume it’s high frets especially when it’s not tuned to pitch.
Best video ever I really love the color on the telecaster I love telecaster they have that cool clean tone the one that prince used Nice Gibson explorer I still my red one I love it and Epiphone it's a great company I wish I could get a Les paul like that thanks for all ur cool videos i literally watch u all day.
You are, hands down, a nice guy! I love your videos and I learn a lot! You sound like a kid on Christmas morning that's exited for his new gift. That's awesome! My wife doesn't allow me to buy anymore guitars.... lol!!!
I believe the outer box is Musicians Friends box( no up arrow or fragile markings). The box with the staples is what Epiphone sent the guitar to Musicians Friend in. Muse was unopened. Explorer is an open box. Am I wrong? Makes you wonder did someone return it for fret issues? You got to watch them!
The black Epiphone Explorer looks exactly the same as mine that I got in 2002 because Dave Grohl was playing one in the video for "Big me". I ended up changing the pickups to active EMGs 60 & 81.
Lookin Forward for the Slash 2020 Vermilion burst, that's my choice for the colour option. Waitin for the Broadcaster too, about the see thru finish, i really suggest u look out for Mary Kay stratocaster to learn about this finish Austin 🤘
The Slash guitars should have skully on the headstock, Seymour Duncan pickups and a custom case. Think black snakeskin (just like his old signature amp), chrome latches and skully over or under the Gibson logo
On the Epiphones where you're getting buzzing on the 5-7th frets, have you checked the neck relief on these? If the neck is straight or back-bowed you'll get buzzing even if the frets are OK. Maybe dial the relief in before checking the frets? That new fret rocker from Stew Mac would be your best friend there to identify true high frets. A major part of the cost reduction of these guitars is that they are not set up properly before shipping. I suspect that may be a major part of the problem you're experiencing with these new ones. Great job on the channel as always!
mac525 the setup from the factory is near worthless, as the don't know where you/the buyer is so they can't set it up for you without everything moving because of changes in its atmosphere. So even if it's a ten million dollar guitar it isn't really reasonable to expect it to be setup with the trials and tribulations of shipping. Most people don't know that so they do expect it.
Really like that Broadcaster re-issue. Why didn't it come with the ashtray though? It's Broadcaster (cease and desist from Gretch) "No" Caster then Telecasters from then on. I kind of dig the blonde finish on it instead of the banana yellow you see on the Jr's. Sucks to see Epiphone's QC on the fretwork being such a spotty mess. So many new players are going to receive theirs and not know how to fix it or not afford to get it setup properly. And oh no I just spent $2400+ on a Gibson and I now get a Chinese case! I'm sure its a cost savings measure to try and stay afloat. Gibson is still in financial recovery. I don't agree with this decision. But then again they don't even offer a gig bag or case for their new 2020 of "Inspired by Gibson" guitars? Kind of sad really. Finally - c'mon guys we gotta help Trogly get to 100k subs! I bet he'd put out a crazy video. Your playing and production has really improved over the years - can't wait to see your next vid dude!
With most guitars they come into the store in a single box. Additional packaging is going to be something provided by the retailer. If a few guitars show up to the retailer broken it isn't that big of a deal and they can be sent back and replaced with little fuss. If a customer receives a broken guitar that could ruin their shopping experience and cause them to take their business elsewhere in the future. The additional packaging it worth it to the retailer in a way that isn't worth it it to the manufacturer.
I like that 70th Anniversary Broadcaster! Man, I'd love to have that! But I'm broke... 🤣 What they should have done was a 70th Anniversary Esquire (single pickup) version and a Broadcaster version (2 pickups). Would have really been a much more meaningful and iconic reissue, going back to the very beginning of the company, in my personal opinion. I know why they only released the Broadcaster, because it has 2 pickups and everyone would have bitched if they had reissued an Esquire... But people are dumb...Nothing new there... I really hope they do a '51 Nocaster next year.
i know it's probably not the channel to ask this but. maybe you could do a review once a month about pointy guitar brands that aren't gibson or fender. i ask because your reviews are pretty good and in depth enough to actually have a good idea of what to expect if planning on buying a guitar. the metal fans would love to see you taking pointies apart and show us what is hidden under the hoods lol :) great channel keep it up.
Fret buzzes, but you said the neck is straight. You dont really want a 100% flat neck, you want the slightest bit of bow in it, or else when you play between frets 5 and 7, you'll buzz. I'm wondering if they some of them really just need a thorough setup and not really have high frets.
I wonder if the epiphone just needs some relief. It could help with some buzzing around the 5th through 7th frets. You should put a straight edge on the fretboard or hold down the low E string at the first and last fret and see if it needs any relief in that area
Hey Trogly long time watcher of your channel and I don't want to sound like I'm badgering you or anything but I'd say from my experience I'd say most of your problems with the fret issue is a simple truss rod adjustment.if it's back bowed just a hair to much it will make it fret out around the 4th to 6 or 7th fret, according to the scale length.put a notched straight edge on the neck and see if it is back bowed.i may be telling you something you already know but it's the guitar builder in me so I can't help it lol.love the channel bro and am very juelouse of those beautiful guitars.cheers
Have you ever done a video on advice for guitars that might be good to collect now? Like I can't afford a 50,60,70s Les Paul, but what about a more recent Peter Frampton Les Paul? Worth buying for collection? Thanks and enjoy your videos!
I like both high end and low end reviews Trog. The high end stuff is great for dreaming and the low end stuff is just fun. Maybe review some old Harmony Guitars, at one time they were the largest instrument maker in the world. How about a bass review or 2?
You forgot to mention on the Epiphone Muse how amazing the fretboard grain pattern was. Also on that slash signature that “cat eye” you’re referring to is a knot in the wood lol.
Good stuff trog! I would have went with a different color slash too but still sweet! I too have noticed Gibson case quality has dropped starting in 2019. Strange story: My uncle purchased a 2019 gibson es-339 gloss-light caramel burst and the case was all coming apart and the pickguard was unglued. I know the pickguards on the es guitars can be a pain. Well he wasn't happy so he sent it back and got another es-339 same color. That one had a better case but the finish and color on the back of the neck was screwy so he sent that one back. So this time he got the same guitar but strangest thing ever it came with a figured block inlay fretboard and neck?? Also came with COA kinda like a custom shop COA. Well all the gloss es-339's come with dot inlay. How come this brand new es-came with block inlays? Suffice to say its a beautiful specimen and it seems like an upgrade. Have you ever heard of such a thing? Gibson told him it happens occationaly to consider himself lucky! I think its super cool but very strange to say the least. It came from a shop in mississippi where the other two came directly from the memphis shop. I know you charge for answers but a response would be greatly appreciated. I figured your the man when it comes to gibsons and have seen just about everything. Thanks man! Rock on!
Out of left field here, but since they're a sub-brand of Fender, if you can find one for a good price, maybe a Jackson? They do have their single cut line out now (The Monarkh... I think I spelt that right) and it might be an interesting point to compare one to say, a Gibson or Epiphone of a similar price. You know, as a traditional Gibson guy it'd be an interesting experiment I feel.
I am really diggin the Strat. That is more like a guitar I would play. But the Broadcaster is amazing. As soon as you lifted it out if the case you can see that fat neck. Like a baseball bat cut in half. Is that finish like a mary kay? Looks amazing.
Please get one of each of the new namm custom shop historic firebirds the reverse and non reverse, and go in depth into what they’ve done with them. IF you can find the right one when available. No one has, and no one will if you don’t. They are truly beautiful guitars and I saw them as a highlight of Gibson’s showcase this winter as far as how colorful the wall was. Please give the firebirds some credit 🥺. Ps I know this was kinda unrelated to the video.
That first super strat unboxed kind of looks like the Heartfield Talon Fender put their name on back in the 90s it was an Ibanezy guitar made in the Fujigen factory.
their take on the Ibanez RG series, yet only mediocre hardware compared to the RGs. Seems to me Fender didn't really want a share in that market niche back in the day. All their attemts seemed a bit lackluster.
Max Mustermann Not the Heartfield Talons those were pretty much high end Ibanez 1:1 with a made by fender sticker applied on it. I think Talon 3 and 4 started coming with Dimarzios in them
I'd be interested to see if your fingers are dirty after playing the Epiphpne fret test and perhaps in the review video how you clean them showing before and after on the fingers.
I bet Gibson are regretting having their cases made in china now !!! Their stock is going to get real scarce real fast with no more coming for ... who knows how long ?

Space Alien no doubt it can happen. You're right. Just thinking it might be a back bend if they're all bottoming out in the same spot, and near the middle of the neck like that.
That Explorer is identical to the one I purchased during Christmas 2008. I only kept it less than 4years (to August 2012). It was killer, but after I got to New York City and was sharing a pad with 3 others, that particular guitar had become a novelty that just took up space.
Loved the Epiphone Les Paul Muse, and of course the Fender Broadcaster, thanks for another memorable unboxing day.

Any extra packaging would have been done by the store you ordered from
I work in Canada's largest music chain. Yes they arrive just in the triangle boxes on a pallet to our stores.
5th Fret area buzzes could be a truss Rod adjustment, but you got all the gear ya need to find out
a small upward curve is desired according to the book I have
Bit late on this, but I used to work for a haulage firm and we had a contract to deliver Fender family brands and they just used to stack and wrap to a pallet.
Can't say what the pack job was like as all I used to see was a mixed pallet(s) full of Fender, EVH, Jackson etc. going to guitar shops in the UK such as PMT, GAK and Andertons.
I think you need to review a fender Toronado! They’re like a Les Paul/Jazzmaster blend. Would be epic!
Another nice unboxing! And yes Gibson USA having their cases made in China is just ridiculous...haha. Btw. will you be unboxing and reviewing some of the new Epiphone semi/hollow bodies? Thanks
Yeah here's a $3000 USA made guitar in a Chinese case
I wonder if these new Chinese Gibson cases have that stanky off gassing that most Chinese made cases tend to have...
I love that Broadcaster!
The blond finish is fantastic.
Reminds me of a Mary Kaye Strat. ✌💀👽🎸🎶🎵
You can’t take a new guitar out of the box, experience buzzing and assume it’s high frets especially when it’s not tuned to pitch.
i just think its so satisfying watching him unbox and review guitars that i womt ever be able to afford
That 'dramatic opening' made me chuckle, good episode as always :-)
The black Epiphone Explorer looks exactly the same as mine that I got in 2002 because Dave Grohl was playing one in the video for "Big me". I ended up changing the pickups to active EMGs 60 & 81.
I enjoyed the dramatic opening way too much😆😆
FYI...The "swoosh stripe" below the argent silver "STRAT" logo matches the body color on those models.
its hard to make a case for moving production to china .......................see wot i dun there??
I enjoy the epiphone unboxings... we'll have to force him to inspect more pointy Ibanez Axion Labels!
Dang just imagine how many fender play gift cards this dude has
Sadly, I’ve only ever got one (on a used guitar)
The Trogly's Guitar Show bruh, thats a crime
Wow I didn't know some cases where Made in Costa Rica, that's cool!
Lookin Forward for the Slash 2020 Vermilion burst, that's my choice for the colour option.
Waitin for the Broadcaster too, about the see thru finish, i really suggest u look out for Mary Kay stratocaster to learn about this finish Austin 🤘
Holy Freaking Moly !! They're beautiful !! You show so many nice guitars, how can you not want most of them!! 😂
That Broadcaster was soooo nice! Guarantee that is much better than an original!
The Slash guitars should have skully on the headstock, Seymour Duncan pickups and a custom case. Think black snakeskin (just like his old signature amp), chrome latches and skully over or under the Gibson logo
Should come slash and slash should deliver and be your roomate while you own the guitar
$2k for a guitar with a Chintzy case. Another reason to tell Gibson to smoke it! They just don't get it.
prices going up, quality going down, aint nothing new in the 21st century.
I love the transparent fender finish! How is it possible to be on the fence with it!?! Great video
That’s the COOLEST guitar he’s gotten in a while. Keith would smash him over the head with it for not appreciating it. Lololol
That dramatic unboxing tho!! 😂🤘
Ohhhh man I NEED one of those broadcasters. Stunning!!
I have one of the early Broadcaster reissues. It's sonic blue and Fender aged it pretty nicely.
What, you don't check the frets on the Gibson? :)
I like that 70th Anniversary Broadcaster! Man, I'd love to have that! But I'm broke... 🤣
What they should have done was a 70th Anniversary Esquire (single pickup) version and a Broadcaster version (2 pickups).
Agreed on the Esquire! I really dont wanna pay custom shop money for one
That looks like a great Teleblaster. Thanks Austin.
i know it's probably not the channel to ask this but. maybe you could do a review once a month about pointy guitar brands that aren't gibson or fender. i ask because your reviews are pretty good and in depth enough to actually have a good idea of what to expect if planning on buying a guitar. the metal fans would love to see you taking pointies apart and show us what is hidden under the hoods lol :) great channel keep it up.
It's an early morning for me so I heard "neck-beard" instead of neck binding..
11:57 Damn That's Nice
The Color!😁 WoW!
So big ticket price and now the cases are made in China. Gibson just makes it easier to check out other brands I'm sorry to say.
Damn look at that Broadcaster ... Fender really know how to make an amazing standard production guitar
Man I am looking forward to all these reviews. Love that Broadcaster.
Looking foward to see the cheaper Bolivian Dream ahahahaga Nice unboxin Austin
Looks amazing.
i wish i knew half as much stuff about guitars as this guy does
Man I could watch you unboxing guitar all day 😬
I purchased my guitars from Sweetwater and have Zero issues or complaints
Was kinda enjoying you go through the newer Epi's. Hopefully more new guitars in the future!
Interesting to see that Gibson cases are also made in Costa Rica ‘cause we don’t see a lot of Gibsons here :(
Please get one of each of the new namm custom shop historic firebirds the reverse and non reverse, and go in depth into what they’ve done with them.
I think Talon 3 and 4 started coming with Dimarzios in them
@@Cookie4yabroyep your're right, a friend had one like that but his had fender pus only and some sort of floyd derivative, didn't feel too expensive
I'd be interested to see if your fingers are dirty after playing the Epiphpne fret test and perhaps in the review video how you clean them showing before and after on the fingers.
I have a '86 Charvel Model 6.. is very similar to the white "Strat" you opened first. Mine is a metallic red color with EMG's HSS... nice one
I bet Gibson are regretting having their cases made in china now !!! Their stock is going to get real scarce real fast with no more coming for ... who knows how long ?
They can probably blstill buying from their old suppliers...
I paid 3k and got a china Gibson case. Its crappy. It doesn't close perfectly and it has a twist in it. It's super disappointing.
Underground Frenchy That’s a very interesting range of an understanding about millennials, because I am a millennial purchased a home, a boat, two cars, and I have a wife and kid. I work DAMN hard for it all, So don’t lump us all in one category, as that can be considered very ignorant.
By the way I clean, vacuum, and wash my car’s...😂 we’re not all the same.
Underground Frenchy pretty troglys is a millennial
Underground Frenchy There are fucking tones of guitar player these days, are you for real? How about you actually go outside and experience it first hand instead of just believing what you read such as ‘The guitar is dead’... My man, guitars are more popular now than ever
The Broadcaster is my pick of the bunch 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I played a bunch of the new Epiphones at the local music store and the SG muse was definitely the standout in finish and feel.
Omg that dramatic opening was gold. That was so funny. Hahahahaha.
Were the gibson case made at yorkville in Canada? I’m happy I bought my 60s last
summer i have s made in canada case 👍🏻 -proud canadian here
Before you dress the frets with your new Stwemac tools, try to adjust the trussrod properly and see if the buzz goes away.
Natural wood binding on an Explorer?!?!?!?! Holy smokes that's awesome!!!!!
I can't decide if this helps curve OR feed my want for new gear?
