05:47 They actually used English text for the tractor beam readout in the theatrical cut of A New Hope, but changed it to Aurebesh in later versions (Special Edition or DVD version). I don't think they invented Aurebesh until Return of the Jedi, so I think the writer/artist can be forgiven for using it here.
14:11 "Awwww...my butterfly...." Also...the telekinetic guy wouldn't notice there are two dudes that look the same, and also that the missile was coming towards himself?
There are Latin characters and Arabic numerals on the Death Star control panel in New Hope. One of the changes they made in the Special Editions was to replace them with Aurebesh.
The funny thing is that this Star Wars is totally MY Star Wars! Of course I saw all the movies when I was a kid and I loved them but, back then, seeing movies was a pretty rare thing. Back before they were on TV or VHS was particularly common you were lucky to have seen the movie more than once and, as I was quite young at the time I really didn't remember it that well. So these comics and the Kenner toys were pretty much my Star Wars universe. How the characters acted in the comics was probably more familiar to me as a kid then how they were portrayed in the movies because there were so many more comic and backyard adventures! It's a short "pulpy" era of the saga that has pretty much been entirely forgotten today. It's probably also why characters looking like the actors that portrayed them really wasn't a big deal to me back then. The CHARACTERS of Han, Luke, Leia and Vader were more real to me than the actors that played them.
Oh. My. Gosh. I HAD this comic as a kid and I owned very few Star Wars comics. I’d completely forgotten about it, but as you reviewed the issue, it came back to me so quickly. The gold hidden in the rib cage, the deadly butterfly, the nonsensical holograms. I remembered it as if I’d just read this a couple months ago. Crazy. As an 11-year old, my discerning tastes weren’t too sophisticated, but I never enjoyed the comics to the same degree as the movies and no wonder! The issues I read didn’t have the same sense of epic grandeur and adventure that the films conveyed with such (seeming) ease. Thanks for the this trip down memory lane!
Various Star Wars fiction talks about the Rebellion's organization, which is extensive, including finances and logistics. Many of it's members were politicians who siphoned funds and supplies to support the Rebellion. So, that story premise is not far out at all. Also, apparently, the original Cut of Star Wars had English Language on control panels on the Death Star--later changed.
Final Thought: I guess the Crown Jewels would be worth a lot to Leia for sentimental reasons and maybe that's why Vader wanted them? But at the cost of the Rebellion getting a bunch of X-Wings. I wonder if the Emperor looked at a report of this was said, "WTF were you thinking?!"
They're also collateral Leia can't use again, even if she repays the loan on time and in full. I'm sure the bank executives will be VERY sorry they lost her collateral, and have to compensate her for the loss, but it's not going to be as much as she could raise with the Crown Jewels.... 😢
We had an Atomic comics here in Phoenix. It had 3 locations and all. They all closed though, primarily because someone crash their car into the main location. It caused a flood & ruined everything. This store had a ton of back issues too. So many amazing comics lost forever. No amount of insurance can help that. That’s a hit to the soul.
I was thinking about the premise that the rebel alliance is a small, plucky band without the need for finance staff. The alliance has an army, navy, and airforce (They seem to have troops, battleships, and fighters). If so they are going to need a logistics chain. it's hard to imagine secretly building under ground bases that conceals aircraft squadrons, or supplying a battlegroup of capital ships with food, parts, fuel, and ammunition without some kind of money. It seems to me that this rebel alliance would require its own shadow economy.
This is so weird, this issue was the only Star Wars comic I can remember owning as a kid and it did NOT represent what Star Wars was to me at all even back then. I did love the alien assassins though, just because, Hell, they were aliens. This was a fun remember-when.😄
Love the animated intro now. Anyway, as far as being hit or miss or not feeling Star Wars, we have to remember that a lot of these comics were written when they only had one or two movies to go on for source material and that was it. Think about it, even with Disney starting over they have a lot of EU that they can pick and choose from, ship designs six movies (before Force awakens) video games... a big old stockpile of design and story ideas right there that we all know "feels" Star Wars. The Marvel comics guys had so very little to work on. It's one reason why I love these comics, they're so bizarre because they're basically guesswork at just what "Star Wars" was supposed to be.
Hah! Funny that you picked that spesific story. I loved it when I was a kid, and still love it today - but nowadays mostly because of the artwork. I love the way Carmine Infantino draws Vader's mask super-wide at times. We had a Norwegian Star Wars comic that started with issue 51 (Marvel) and all of the issues before that were only available in second hand stores. Back in those days you could consider yourself very lucky if you managed to find any original American Star Wars comics in such stores. I wasn't old enough to see the movies back then and the comic books was my guide to the characters. That said, I still love many of these Star Wars stories even though they have little or no root in the events in the movies. I think that some of these stories or at the very least characters should be used for a "A Star Wars Story" movie. Like Dani the zeltron for instance.
There was no English, but there was no alien language either. They could have made something up or just put in English. Fun Fact: It wasn't until 1993 until Aurobesh became a written language that translated to English, thanks to one of the guys working on the role playing game.
Star Wars #38 is the single greatest issue of the comic.. it was an inventory fill-in issue to stall an issue before Empire... by Archie Goodwin and Michael Golden.
Marvel was kinda hit and miss with starwars back in the day I mean I think the best issues from that series were the movie adaptations but since getting the license back they are now putting out awesome stuff heck it’s way better than dark horse
This whole issue is a GIANT FLEX by Vader. He didnt need to do any of this, he could have captured or killed her at any time realistically and had no need to go through the charade. However Leia did in order to get capital to fight Vader, so instead of dealing physical damage, he taunts her, pokes and jabs her verbally, then makes her think her plan went through only to find out at the end that no matter what she already lost as her loan went through, but Vader just took what her currency is backed on and what the loan is based on. So he just made a sidetrip to troll leia and IT WORKED!!!
Oh my god I had a big collection of these issues I got from the library when I was like 6 and remember them being completely insane with space gods and crazy robot planets and I completely forgot all about them until now.
i never got a chance to see any of the star wars comics when then they new. i have thought i could just go to a comic book shop and ask them to assemble the original run of reader copies....But seeing how lame the stories were i think i just saved myself a lot of cash by changing my mind - great video chris..
Comes across like an old DC story from the 1960's or 70's, where there would be some series of challenge that couldn't be resolved with direct force. Superman and Legion of Super-Heroes did stories like this month after month.
HahA! Another great vid. I had that comic as a kid and man, did it ever bring back some memories. I remember being really disappointed in it. The final page sort of nullified everything in the comic. Vader acting upset must have been the real charade because Leia was the one who was playing into Vader's hands.
6:11 I think Aurebesh was a special edition change for the movies and that it didn't really exist back then because I remember seeing Episode 4 with English in it. I could be wrong, haven't looked into it that deeply.
I'm pretty sure Aurebesh made an early appearance in the West End Games Star Wars RPG, or in one of the source books i the late 80s or early 90s. I'll look into it. EDIT Yep, it appears in ROTJ but as total nonsense, it gets fleshed out in the WEG Star Wars RPG in '93.
@@mr.pavone9719 See, now that also makes sense because those WEG RPGs and source books basically are the building blocks of the wider inner workings of the galaxy. thanks for telling me :D
I'm so glad you covered at least one Carmine Infantino Star Wars comic, although I'm pretty certain that's not the milleniumnfalcon viewed in the background.
It was the original concept for the Millennium Falcon. When George Lucas saw how similar it was to the Eagle transporter in Space: 1999, he ordered a new design The old version was adapted into the Tantive IV.
A couple things in defense of the premise. One, diplomatic pouches are common. Before encrypted emails, they were an important way for foreign officials to communicate with home and they are still common. Sometimes there are controversies around them. Secondly, seeking financing during a rebellion is also common. That's something the Americans did in France during the Revolutionary War.
I used to own this issue, in fact, I think I still do. Maybe it wasn't the most starwarsy thing ever but that was the charm... it was written during a time when there wasn't a thing such as a 'default Star Wars' so anything goes. Also, it has this spy story vibe much as you see in films like Casablanca in which there's a war but there are also neutral zones where the warring factions can meet and play heists and capers to screw the others.
"We never see any English in the Star Wars movies." Actually, we do in the original, pre-"Special Edition" version of A New Hope. On the control panel for the tractor beam, the words "POWER" and "TRACTOR BEAM" are clearly visible.
Pretty nice although I disagree with some of the Life Day selections. Wealthy people can easily turn the tide of even dictatorships. (Remember the Sons of Liberty that sparked the revolution were all highly respected merchants.) Keeping diplomatic relations good with bankers is important.
The Shortpacked webcomic once wrote a skit about how the Star Wars planets were hyper specialized. The punchline was a planet that specialized in giant bees

The Original Star Wars movie DID have English but the special editions edited it out.

"Aargau" is a canton of Switzerland. Maybe that's why a banking planet is called that ...
Walter Endres That makes sense. Larry Hama liked to insert references like that.
It’s Frankenberry, Count Chocola and Boo-Berry Vader has a cereal squad.

Drawing vader's mouth plate way too wide makes him hilariously look like an Aardmann animated character.
