ABOUT JOHN COOGAN:
I am the co-founder of soylent.com and lucy.co, both of which were funded by Y Combinator (Summer 2012 and Winter 2018).
I've been an entrepreneur for the last decade across multiple companies. I've done a lot of work in Silicon Valley, so that's mostly what I talk about. I've raised over 10 rounds of venture capital totaling over $100m in funding.
I work mostly in tech-enabled consumer packaged goods, meaning I use software to make the best products possible and then deliver them to the widest possible audience. I'm a big fan of machine learning, python programming, and motion graphics.

Great content as always. I enjoyed how in this video you used less footage from popular movies, which can sometimes be distracting when I've watch the movie and am familiar with the context of the scenes.
Simple explanation of so called "AI":
It is a group of algorithms that build and run "statistic models" of provided data. The models are made of "patterns" that "condesate" inside a special structure - layers of interconnected "neurons" and "weights".
Later, those patterns being manually connected to the right outputs and the model is ready. This step called "learning process".
This data model with proper algorithm allows doing one of 3 basic things: to predict, to classify or to recognize input from the same source.
The application field is huge, bcuz literally everything around IS data.
When people discount AI because it's just "statistical modelling" then i must think how our brains are not all too different. Layers of yes(fire) no(don't fire) neurons with the ability to have weights (varying voltages).
Molecular biologist here building a biotech startup. Science just started going through a massive change and will have many breakthroughs over the next 10 years. If you are looking to invest in these companies there are a few key indicators that you must look out for as it isn't cheap.
There is even a, i would call it a fifth field, where Ai is trained on a set of functions to replace standard numerical algorithms like root finding. In a recent study a group managed to 10x the simulation speed of neutron star mergers by replacing numerics with Ai to bring down the time required from a month per simulation to a few hours. Why is this cool ? NS mergers produce gravitational waves. By understanding the source of these waves one can not only learn about nuclear physics but might be able to infere properties of dark matter as well.
First off, gravity has yet to be adequately and sufficiently explained. an apple or any other object of density propelling and in motion itself in space is producing and generating 'gravitational' waves. I think 'gravitational' waves are expressions of space dependent on the intensity and density of objects colliding and or interacting with space. What we call 'gravitational' waves are various types of expressions of space from bodies of mass and density colliding with each other as well as moving through space. Since 'gravitational' waves have been verified, this then indicates that outer space or any other kind of space is not a true vacuum. True vacuums may not even exist and nigh vaccums may be interdependent and the source of what we call 'gravity' as well as time.
This is fascinating, thank you for making this video!
As always I love your work!
This one could have used a few more concrete examples - (and a few supporting clips/stills of AI enhanced electron-microscopes would have been wonderful).
Anyway, this is top-quality content. Thankyouverymuch, John! Keep up your great work.
Amazing video as always John. Hope one day you can make a video on the impact of cloud computing.
I always learn so much watching your channel. 👍🏼 Thank you
That's so like, just amazed me a lot, very enjoyable to know, and thanks for the content on RUclips.
Most underrated channel on youtube
Your content is addictive, can't wait for the next upload👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Top tier content!!! Very educative ans just as entertaining!
great as always John Thank you kindly
Skeptical. Studied Quantum A.I. in grad school (in the physics department, not CS) and became a founder afterwards. The "dev" cycle in science is totally different than in Silicon Valley. Plus the blackbox nature of ML means that many papers applying A.I. to science simply cannot pass peer review, which means that very few researchers will be able to build academic careers on A.I.-backed science. It probably wont be until the 2030's that we'll see A.I. algorithms have any real impact on science outside of a few headline-catching articles. We'll probably see more activity from private firms which can capably join A.I. teams with scientific teams (which is a large departure from the norm of real-world science).
AIs need to cite their sources.
Could you explain more how papers who used A.I would often not be able to pass peer reviews?
@@axelr7787 usually peer reviewed journal articles need a common basis for everyone to work on. E.g., if your article/paper is about human psychology, then when you publish it, the journal will then send it to other psychologists in the field to review. The common basis is the human psyche. But A.I. is being researched by many companies but each A.I. is very different, so there's not much common ground to then peer review the article on.
Ah, so not only you are lying both to yourself and to others that "AI works!!!", you also cannot publish and make a good living out of it. I'm really impressed!!!
@@josephstearns8949 I understand you now better, but should this not only be in areas where the AI would suddenly venture into a new and unexpected area of knowledge where there would be very few or zero human experts? For example the way DeepMind's AlphaFold worked it was fully possible for leading biologists in the world to acknowledge it's achievement in some thing which looks really close to the peer review process
Great Video and Insights
As a software Engineer,I really love your contents bro ;keep it up .
Hi John, juste discovered your youtube channel 4 days ago, I have watched all your videos and I have learned a lot! Thanks a lot! I have one question, I am interested in EdTech, I have an idea to help kids, student to be better students and truly learning and don't only learn to have good grades and then forget everything! I have been searching for all the EdTech and none ofd them provide the need or solve the problem. I am ML research scientist, I am good at coding (mainly ML coding) but not software engineer. I have discussed with some potentiels customers and they have found it really good. Actually I got this idea from some problems with my students - kids cousins. My concern is, I am based in Europe (France) and I will apply for my citizenship, so it will take 1.5 to 2 years to get it, so from legal aspect, I can't start a startup. So, as I don't have any idea how much time it will take to build a product (it uses AI). I am estimating that it will take 1 - 1.5 year (As I will learn web dev and software engineering) to build it. I am wondering from your experience, should I learn and build my product in the 2 years (while I am waiting for my citizenship) or prepare for interviews and change a job (big tech) where I can learn the best practices to build a product (but I don't know if I really will learn what I will need to build my product). I am solo founder and I would like to build it my self at lest the MVP, get customers and then build a team. I am wondering how is important to get into incubator? I am in mall town, and honestly the startup growth in France is not that high. I am targeting US market. Sorry, my post is long. Hopefully, you can answer. I would be happy to work for you even for free to learn and be prepared for my startup. Sorry for my english (it's my fourth language) and I am trying to improve. :)
Thanks for the “Soylent” reminder as in “Soylent Green”!!!
That was amazing, very helpful. ty
where's the stock footage in 1:39 of two guys in front of computer came from? is that a film?
Mining for meaning. Great video.
Good job man.Way to go.
great content definately deserves more subs
Thanks John!
Super great article! Wow
One of my fav channels of all youtube. Greatly undervalued. But worry not John! It will pass 1 mio subs by Feb 2023
Fascinating stuff.
Good job!
I love your content ❤
good voice, good content. keep up the good work 💪
I love these videos
what is the song/music called at the end of the video?
My favorite RUclipsr! 😁
The only technology with an infinite amount of applications
good content bout AI as problem solver (computation brain) and never about consciousness, hurt, pain, anxiety, sentient or Private Language logic. kudos.
Hey John can you increase the volume on your videos?
Dude! Your content is 110% legit. How the f$&k aren’t you at 1 mill+ mark??
7:17! But reading vs trusting though. Also, don't a lot of articles and stories have spin?
Physics uses AI type of algorithms for a long time now. But they didn't call it AI, but rather heuristics or something like that. Of course this algorithms where more restrictive and hand modeled and needed less data.
Obviously, people that call this technology "AI" don't have a clue how it works. 😉
Ai isn't just heuristics.
It's also the concept of machine learning and generated adversarial networks paired with a wide array of different algorithms.
Ye we're a long way from AI intelligence requires scentions and it remains/unknown as to weather that's programmable what comes first intelligence or scentions
@johnCoogan How do i join your team?

Great content as always.Adicting is controversial. it's like someone telling you somebody is obsessed just because it's dedicated.
nice @!
please tell me how you research this stuff
By googling, I guess...
This content is very addictive and youtube likes vids with high watchtime so 10M subs is in close proximity... keep in mind that regularity is key to algorythm to like you

I pop this Into my feed every time to try and help this
These videos always makes our days better
so your a fake channel
@@United_Wings so you're captain obvious...jkjk don't kill me satire
I can't find any substantial information regarding A.I. that's recent. You think this groundbreaking tech would be greatly publicized
At this time 8/2023 people are afraid of AI and what it can do to the world, but looking at how AI in its basic form can really help science speed up research and or solve issues we have with said research. who knows what creative ways people will use AI in future studys.
Pls do a video of how Strong AI will affect the economy.
You can read Sam Altman’s blog on AI and capitalism
Have you thought of speeding up your delivery even further, so that it's all over quicker and we can move on to another video? That would reduce our level of annoyance at the ratatat sentences.
Nice video and important content
Science and Nature may be two different Journals, but they feel the same 😅
Sensationalist tbh cos everything he talked about is old news
You just earn my subscription
Careful
Who else thinks that this guy deserves to have hit a million subscribers by now? 😊
Great work John ❤
This channel will reach 1 million subs by 2023, mark my words.
The singularity had happened and Google know it.
I have a 2 questions. (For which I am aching to be answered) sorry for my bad English in advance. (English is not my 1st language).
First:
How will a bci increase brain function as claimed by several entrepreneurs and futurists. For example, if I have an implant and someone asks me what's 35844 multiplied by 6877 is, how will the bci help me know the solution immediately so I can answer. Will I have to ask my bci and it will tell me the solution like a voice inside my head, (if that's the case then bcis are basically useless as it is the same as asking my assistant verbally on my phone like siri), OR will I just "know the answer" immediately cuz of the bci, if that's the case then just how will that or does that work????.
Second:
If we finally figure out a bci that can perfectly read motor signals from the brain and relay that info so as to control a virtual character in a game, how then will we move that virtual character without also moving our real bodies. Like if I think to raise my hand or walk so that my virtual counterpart does the same, won't then my real body do the same instead of sitting or laying In a bed like in soa. How will we be able to isolate control between real body and the virtual body. Will the bci have the ability to not only read the motor signals but also shut off the motor signals reaching the parts of our real body ???? So that our real bodies can lie down in a bed while we spin and jump around in the virtual world. If so how will that work???.
Please 🙏 I would love these questions to be answered as I not able to find a convincing answer anywhere else or atleast something close to one.
Just wait a few years and this will have 200M views
I just hope we use this is technology in science ,health ,transportation and a million other things good for humanity. not for wars, military applications.
Holly crap. Would you cut those non related animations and movie bits which don't relate to the subject?
I just hope Artificial intelligence doesn't get corrupted by greed and selfishness like humans

dope'
I seriously hope that this guy (his image and voice) are A.I. generated. Otherwise he creates the uncanny valley feeling yet is real!
It’s because the recording of his voice doesn’t match the environment. Visually, you’re several feet from him, but aurally it feels like he’s next to you. Maybe it’s dubbed, or it might just be his method of recording audio, blocking out noise.
If a phone cell battery and a ai microchip powered by sun light could power a lightbulb
Good video, but I'm skeptical.
Skeptical about what?
@@mdoerkse probably it's practically, usefulness, and u know, if it will even pass stage one trials, (95% fail)
para mi gusto estamos avanzando muy lento especialmente en los video juegos
good content. Everything with a pro definitely has a con. artificial intelligence has proven to have diverse importance in virtually every part of life. Healthcare will benefit largely as well, imagine when Pulse network unleashes us better access to medical care.
Can some AI spawn some digits in my bank account
Actually it can, if it is a trading bot.
good
Thank you spiderman🕷🕸
Not as many comments as I thought there would be
finally ai is doing something usefull
It's been doing many useful things, they just haven't been calling it AI. Ray Kurzweil predicted a long time ago that we would keep shifting the goalposts for what AI is as it keeps advancing.
if im not wrong....is he try to saying ai disturbing our dna memory and protien structure ... .. my english is very bad
The first was Atari.

Get AI to workout how to improve AI, then use that AI to workout how to improve AI further…
I just realized John fakes his deep voice with software lol
Let's just hope Ai isn't fond of dark humor
Can AI solve the HASH algorithm ...
The greatest advances in AI haven't been revealed & may never have a chance to be revealed to humans.

I suspect most advancements will be coming from outside of the United States given the current state of the education system. Real shame.

Andressen is more of a marketer than a visionary.
We should all be as enthusiastic as John, ecstatic about a sentient Ai that will realize Its' not really alive as we are, an Ai that would likely consider Itself a God as It comparers Itself to the average individual of our species, and or may decide to destroy each and everyone of us for creating such an abomination: Yes, let's all follow John, to our personal doom and collective demise.
Ai is the perfect problem, one that will be impossible to solve once It installs Itself into just about everything we use and rely upon.
People just don't want to stop playing God. "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 3:4-5)
When you train AI with false info from the media.
I'll be no shocked if AI gives birth
My body is ready for our AI powered minority report overlords.
