Hey John just found your channel it is one of the best channels on RUclips hands down. I'm a Canon shooter right now, just a rebel t5i, looking to upgrade my body and thinking about switching to Fuji after watching your content. How far can you push the iso before it really hurts quality? I know their crop sensors but seems like they handle lowlight pretty well
great shots! for the Godox you don't ever use TTL maybe with some flash exposure comp (lowering it by a stop)? I would think that a manual setting is more consistent but sometimes you might miss something as the flash was "fixed"? thanks!
I’ve only done two smaller weddings (my first was in a school cafeteria!) and was just asked this past week to shoot a third in April. Feeling rather nervous about it, I started checking out RUclips to see if I could get some pointers. That’s when I discovered your channel. Your videos are an inspiration to me! I now feel more confident and have picked up some ideas having watched them. Thank you and keep putting out great work!
Yay! I’m so glad I’ve been able to add a little to your confidence for your wedding days! Thank you for sharing with me as it means so much to know that I’m helping others!
It’s awesome to see how our approaches are so different haha. Great to see your thought process, settings, and how you get your look for reception dancing photos.
Your channel is perfect! This was the hardest part of the wedding I found (as I’ve only shot my first so far). I never ever use flash so will be listening attentively.
hi I'm a wedding photographer from Belgium. I've stopped shooting for a long while now. I had my children (3) and took the time for my family. Now that the youngest will be going to kindergarden. I'll start shooting again, I'm very excited though a lot has changed...I have experience for several years but need to practice again. obviously I will buy new gear, it has been 10 years since my last wedding. anyway that's a bit about me..just wanted to thank you, to remind me what I Love to do. I wish you all the best and thank you for all the effort you put in making your videos. grtz from the land of chocolate 😃
Oh my goodness. Thank you for making this so easy to understand. Your tutorials are some of my absolute favorite for just keeping it simpler and not like a serious math equation.
Ha! Now discovered a way of getting different dance floor shots! In the past I've fired off about 20 shots, knowing that 1 or 2 will go in the album. This videohas broadened my mind set. My next challenge is to master the gymnastics that is cake cutting. The choreography for that important shot is so difficult - well to me anyway (I've got far too many shots of false smiles as the couple slice into the cake). Great video series - very engaging and love the humour.
Awesome. Glad this helped out. That’s interesting about the cake cut. That’s one of the most easy and standard parts of the day to me. One of the biggest things is communication throughout. Making sure not just to let the couple do what they want but speak up when there’s something you need. So that you can get the shot. Hopefully I’ll have a video about it soon.
I did something similar to this at a wedding last night. I shoot twin R6 bodies and just used one camera for this - used a mini softbox on godox v1 pointed forward at like 1/32 , Samyang ef 14mm 2.8 at F8-F11, prefocused to 1.5m, ISO 1000 and shutter of 1/6s. Then I deliberately jerked the camera forward or tilted every shot to motion blur the fairy lights and background while the flash froze the dancers expressions 😄
I use the "garyfong" to do the same thing you do. In addition, I also make long exposure shots at very low ISO and very small aperture, to block the dance with the flash, but to bring some lightpainting
Hi John, Interesting, I have tried most way to light party shots, but just one point I must say there is no point in using the Mag Sphere as there is not discernible difference in light just a little more control on the specular, it just adds extra weight and cost you at least a stop in power.
Agreed ( how we shot differently ) Using Minolta Glass ( because I just love their colour rendition ) I prefer to shoot well back ( 75mm focal length, aperture wide open, occasionally down to F4 ish Shutter 1/200S no flash ) My style is to pluck out individual subjects or couples.. ( Similarly to " Street " ) I'm watching for the moment during which it is possible to create a portrait within an environment of chaos .. Kit: Sony Crop sensor DLSR, or SLT Mounted with a Minolta 50mm F1.4 Wider 28mm in pocket ( nothing too valuable ) 😊 Because it's easier to predict movements this style of shooting is better suited to formal dancing ( Country/ Ballroom/ Rock n Roll, etc ) Than ad-hoc ( freestyle) As in " Street " where motions & patterns of movement can be more predictable when confined to a passage / corridor, etc . Success is all about carefully selecting your vantage point, and moment 🙃
Very great tips man. Im planning to shoot on The Clubs and i Have 18mm on My a7iii .. just ordered a flash and still need this little Tool. Cant wait to get Work
I learned Magmods kits from my Wedding Group Peers when we had a Clubhouse Live. I am looking forward to use it this coming oct wedding! been watching your tips snd recommended others to watch and follow you! Thank you John!
Awesome video and great information. Right after watching this video I subscribed! I literally just got the magpod thing today! I’m new to flash stuff but this video helped me a bunch!
I usually use the flash with a radio trigger .. the camera in one hand, the flash in the other and I fire the flash at an angle of about 45 degrees, perhaps with slower shutter speeds to create trails of ambient light ... however this magmod looks interesting! thank you for the tip!
I’ve seen people do it that way as well. It’s a cool technique. I do sometimes shutter drag as well just wasn’t doing it this time. I think I’ll do a video on it at some point.
Sounds good. I should have talked about that. I’ll leave some notes here for you. Typically with everything in this video the f-stop is as open as possible since it’s so dark. And shutter is around 1/160th.
Love your content. Shooting my first wedding and braving the flash! Searched the comments but was curious what your metering mode is set to? Also do you use back button focus? Thanks again!
Hello. Thank you for your tutorial! Would you be willing to share with your typical camera settings for this case? ( like aperture/shutter speed/ metering mode) thanks!
Awesome vid! I do have a question for you tho? First let me say that I am seriously thinking about doing wedding photography as a profession. I love cameras, and I love weddings. The question I have is, can I use TTL flash or only manual flash. I know that the answer might be subjective to the person, but was wondering what was your take. Definitely hope you can answer.
Hi, John. Just to be clear; you set your iso manually, you're full open at 2.8. Did you set to aperture priority, and shutter speed moves accordingly, because I dont hear you talk about shutter speed, or did you sync it with flash? Ty.
Great video thanks! What do you do in extra dark reception rooms when it's really hard to focus your camera? story of my life and I'm grabbing way to many blurry shots even with the red beam assist.
I don't want to only make it about camera systems but I've never really had that problem for the most part. I think there was once or twice that it happened but it was mainly due to the lens I was using. Also, if I am in that situation I tend to over shoot just to make sure I have more options. But a big thing too is not to use continuous auto focus (if you are). I find single point to be MUCH more reliable and the better way to focus especially when it gets dark.
Hi, thank you ! I have problems to focus with my xt2 and 18-55, but as you showed with a 14mm and flash on , makes the point, I noticed that Andrew Billington uses ZONE FOCUS , he focuses at 4ft , f10 , shutter 1/15 , iso 2000, and gets every image sharp...
That's awesome. When I do my light painting style of flash for reception I do kind of the same thing. The difference is my ISO is down at like 400 and the f/stop is around 14 or 16. Shutter way down at 1/6. Super sharp all the time. You basically can't miss focus.
My flash is generally set to manually and power is usually around 1/32 or 1/16. And my shutter speed is close to the sync speed. So either 1/250 or 1/200. Then I adjust ISO if I need a little more light at all.
i still can’t comprehend the settings. when not using flash my photos look exactly as they do on screen before i take the photo. but with flash i am so confused always. i never know what settings. because it’s all dark 😂it feels like another world! during the day i can instantly see if my setting isn’t working and i adjust it to my liking but with flash i feel like it’s so hard 😭
Question - what do you have your f stop number set to for bigger settings like this? And how do you get everyone's faces in focus without having to look through the view finder to know?
What Fuji-XT4 flash would you recommend for beginners? I have no knowledge about flashes and would love to know your input on where I should begin product wise
Nice. Just got an X-T3 and I’m slowly trying to get comfortable shooting with my Fuji at a wedding. I’m currently on the Sony system. Anyway...do you bounce flash/off camera flash at receptions at all? Also, is the X-T2 still a good enough camera to be a second body?
I do typically use bounce flash and sometimes off camera but basically, I'm shooting mainly how you see me here in this video depending on what the ceilings look like and how high they are. The magsphere helps with bounce flash because you can still bounce it off of the ceiling but some is also going forward. For the X-T2 I think it's still totally usable. I really only switched away from it at the start of 2019. I had been using the X-T2 all the way up to that point.
Glad you liked it! I hope to do more flash videos as well. Typically I'll leave my camera on autofocus single point. And have the point in the center of the frame and a fairly large square (not too big however). Since you can change the square size of the single point focus on the Fuji it's a huge help as well. Typically I don't get things that I wouldn't want.
Hey John! Great video as always! Are you always at 2.8 on the dance floor? Not sure if you are referencing your lens or telling us that you are at 2.8. I have the fuji 16-80 f4 and wondering if you ever shoot at f4. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
John, awesome video and advice. What is the best way to capture motion with flash at a wedding? Do you shoot high speed flash synch or let the flash freeze the action a the synch speed of the camera (typically 1/200 or 1/250). You seem to suggest using a higher speed but you can only override camera synch speed in high speed flash synch settings and the lowers the power of the flash and causes you to raise ISO.
Absolutly loving the channel! Starting my wedding photography business as we speak. Im curious as to how you get sharp photos at 1/32 while moving and and being bumped around? Anything less than say 1/100th I often get photoshake even stood still taking a portrait lol.
Congrats on starting your photography business!! In this video when I’m talking about 1/32 I’m talking about the flash power. So my shutter speed is around 1/160 and the flash power is at 1/32
Good evening John, love your channel. its helped me no end with wedding photography. I have a few questions, firstly I'm a fuji xt-3 shooter, is your flash for on camera flash set to 1st curtain whilst using magmod mag sphere? secondly what zoom do you have your flash on while using this method (do you change it?) and lastly on white balance, I have your presets and was wondering when using any of the white balance modes do you leave the WB shift on R0 B0? if you don't that's fine I was just curious. Thanks
Hi John. I really love the helpful videos you create. Hey, I just ordered the Magmod2 and I was wondering, can I use it with my flash set on TTL mode and my camera in Aperture Priority mode?
Thanks John for this video. I always feel inspired after watching your channel. I have a question about shooting large family groupings of 20-30 people at a reception with flash - Depending on the number of rows what does your f-stop usually stay around? If there were 2-3 rows would you be on f 5.6 or higher with flash? Or would you keep your flash wide open? Thanks!
Hey John, thanks for the video, I have almost same set up like you, xt4, v860iii and magsphere 2, so im just wondering which auto focus settings are u using for dance photography? Thank you!
So I have the fuji xt2 and the godex 860 flash.. I just bout it and have a party that doesn't have the best lighting in the room.. how should I approach setting up and rhe settings ?
Hi John. Loving all your RUclips material. I didn't get what apeature you were using here. You said shoot wide I wasn't sure if that was in relation to the 14mm or the 2.8 or both?
How are you able to see a live preview of how bright your photo will come out , I shoot with a xt3 and I manually have to bump my ISO to preview my framing to get the shot otherwise the screen just looks black cuz it’s lowlight , I barely got into flash so idk if it’s just a setting and I’ve been just using manual settings on the flash if that has anything to do with it
John, do you ever set up stands with constants lighting at various corners of the reception room? If so, what lights do you actually use? I'm looking for company names and models. Thanks, man!
TTL would work but honestly I don't trust it. It would be slow in this situation and also it would change up your photos so much that it would make editing a pain. Manual everything really helps most with post production as well because then you know waht your settings are going to look like and it's easier to edit.
Not sure if youll see this, or if anybody could help me out. But he said he was shooting at 1/30? shouldn't the subjects be a bit blurry at that point? Also, how does youe lends focus in such low light. Is that because he raised his ISO?
When I mention 1/32 I'm talking about the flash power. Generally you'll want to have your shutter around your cameras sync speed. That's generally around 1/200 or 1/250. Also, you can drop your shutter a little if you'd like. Keep in mind that the flash itself is freezing motion which is why you can have your flash a little lower without there being motion blur on your subjects.
@@jbivphotography You're the goat for taking the time to respond. Thank you! It's the little details i forget about sometimes. But those little details matter!
hey John, What do you do when a couple or some random people want a picture of themselves while you have the wide+flash set up ? I find the 23/16 too wide for it and I really dont want to carry another body with a flash Thanks
I have a godox v860II for on camera flash. Am looking at possibly upgrading more for outdoors like a godox 400 or 600 pro maybe? Any experience using strobes or ttl or hss.?
Great as usual! Just one question. U say that u shot from the hip, but all examples are photos taken from above the dancers. So, which one? Also, do u shoot in manual or not?
Sorry for the question, but I’m struggling here 😭😭 I was looking into the Godox flash and I’ve been trying to find one compatible for my canon r6 but a lot of them say compatible with canon eos cameras. Would this still work for my camera?
How was your experience with the shutter speed. Is 1/250 fast enough to collect all moving objects? I will use a yongnuo flash without hss and I think it will be only possible to use it until 1/250s
Typically your flash should be stopping your subjects. So I'm usually shooting at around 1/200 or 1/160th and I'm fine that way. Don't have a lot of blur on my photos at all. I'm using my flash in manual and the power is around 1/32 or 1/16
Slipped a little taste of what some of my behind the scene full wedding day video is going to look like in this one. Hope you enjoyed. 😊
Hey John just found your channel it is one of the best channels on RUclips hands down. Y'all are magical. I'm one of those dance flo' dancers who's amazed you can capture the action while so much is going on!
lol that’s awesome.
I’ve only done two smaller weddings (my first was in a school cafeteria!) and was just asked this past week to shoot a third in April. It’s awesome to see how our approaches are so different haha. Great to see your thought process, settings, and how you get your look for reception dancing photos.
Agreed. I really love seeing how everyone approaches their days. Hopefully we'll shoot together sometime. A melding of worlds 😃
I love the fact that none of your vids have any thumb downs!!! Love your presentation and the light heartedness. Very easy watching...
Best laugh on You Tube! 😂👍
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I agree! Hahaha
Omg I'm so glad someone else noticed too!!!! 💖💖💖🤩😅
Your channel is perfect! This was the hardest part of the wedding I found (as I’ve only shot my first so far). I never ever use flash so will be listening attentively.
Thank you so much. Hope this helped out and if you have any other questions just let me know. Reception can be one of the harder parts of the day.
You did the shortest and most efficient video about that subject. i like your approach and your content is golden, so thanks :)
Thanks a bunch. I'm glad everything was so helpful!
Flash intimidates me so much, so breaking it down like this was sooo helpful! Thank you!
hi
I'm a wedding photographer from Belgium.
I’ve got my first wedding shoot coming up soon and I’m loving your videos, and your laugh is contagious 😂 Thanks for all the great info 👍👍👍
👏👏👏 Awesome! I’m glad everything has been helpful.
Be a part of the party is essential. That's how I take my dance floor pics.
Exactly. You get some of the most emotion out of the dance floor with that approach.
I just got the MagMod Starter Flash Kit 2, can’t wait to use it………Thank You.
Your laugh is so contagious! Love it! 📸
❤️❤️☺️☺️❤️❤️
How difficult is it for the camera to focus in a dark or not well lit room like the reception area?
I use the "garyfong" to do the same thing you do.
In addition, I also make long exposure shots at very low ISO and very small aperture, to block the dance with the flash, but to bring some lightpainting
Yep yep. I think I'm going to make another video on how I do light painting. My process is a little different and I think it'd be awesome to show.
Hi John, Interesting, I have tried most way to light party shots, but just one point I must say there is no point in using the Mag Sphere as there is not discernible difference in light just a little more control on the specular, it just adds extra weight and cost you at least a stop in power.
great tutorial John! I love shooting with my Fuji XS-10 and will start shooting weddings next month! I'm nervous and excited man
Nice! That's exciting. Good luck on your weddings.
Agreed ( how we shot differently )
Using Minolta Glass
( because I just love their colour rendition )
I prefer to shoot well back
( 75mm focal length,
aperture wide open, occasionally down to F4 ish
Shutter 1/200S no flash )
My style is to pluck out individual subjects or couples..
( Similarly to " Street " )
I'm watching for the moment during which it is possible to create a portrait within an environment of chaos ..
Kit:
Sony Crop sensor DLSR, or SLT
Mounted with a Minolta 50mm F1.4
Wider 28mm in pocket
( nothing too valuable ) 😊
Because it's easier to predict movements
this style of shooting is better suited to formal dancing ( Country/ Ballroom/ Rock n Roll, etc )
Than ad-hoc ( freestyle)
As in " Street " where motions & patterns of movement can be more predictable when confined to a passage / corridor, etc .
Success is all about carefully selecting your vantage point, and moment 🙃
Shooting my first wedding this weekend and this was incredibly helpful! Thank you so much!
happy to help out. Good luck!
Very great tips man. Im planning to shoot on The Clubs and i Have 18mm on My a7iii .. just ordered a flash and still need this little Tool. Cant wait to get Work

I hope you get lots more subs dude. You got the magic.
Thank you so much! Hopefully more to come in the near future.
John Branch IV Photography please describe your shutter speed and aperture for these photos in the video. Were they all shot at f/ 2.8?
Great video! These tips really helped!
Awesome! I'm glad this was helpful.
Great tips dude!! And your shots looked awesome!! Great work!!
great! quick! a bunch of good information :) thank you
Dude. Your channel is $$$! Subscribed!
Welcome to the channel! Glad to hear you're enjoying it!
You are rock solid John! Thank you!
Thanks a bunch. I hope this was helpful!
Awesome! For next video please also post the shutter speed and actual f stop if possible :) keep up the good work!
Now that is what I call a useful video :)
Awesome! I'm glad it's been helpful. I'm hoping to do a video on the light painting technique of reception photos too.
Hello. Thank you for your tutorial! Would you be willing to share with your typical camera settings for this case? ( like aperture/shutter speed/ metering mode) thanks!
What's the f stop that you typically use for this situation? I don't know if I missed that.
2.8
Awesome vid! I do have a question for you tho? First let me say that I am seriously thinking about doing wedding photography as a profession. I love cameras, and I love weddings. Hi, John. Just to be clear; you set your iso manually, you're full open at 2.8. Did you set to aperture priority, and shutter speed moves accordingly, because I dont hear you talk about shutter speed, or did you sync it with flash?
Ty.
Yooooo. They were hyyyyype!!!!
Receptions are always so fun!
Great video thanks! What do you do in extra dark reception rooms when it's really hard to focus your camera? story of my life and I'm grabbing way to many blurry shots even with the red beam assist.

But a big thing too is not to use continuous auto focus (if you are). I find single point to be MUCH more reliable and the better way to focus especially when it gets dark.
I have a question in these dark rooms what white balance should you use or should in kelvin.

My flash is generally set to manually and power is usually around 1/32 or 1/16. And my shutter speed is close to the sync speed. So either 1/250 or 1/200. Then I adjust ISO if I need a little more light at all.
Super helpful, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Good job photographer very intresting
Thanks!
Thanks that helped a lot
Glad it helped
Fab video!!! I've got your presets already. They're amazing 🤍
do you use any of the corrective gels when using the magsphere for wedding photography? Or do you shoot with AWB and the flash?
John.... the TT350 or the V860? Wondering if you really need to bump up to the bigger one...
This was really helpful thank you!
Glad this helped out!
thanks for the video! do you think a v350/tt350 would have enough power for small weddings (25-50 guests)?
Thank you, so so much. So helpful :)
i still can’t comprehend the settings. when not using flash my photos look exactly as they do on screen before i take the photo. but with flash i am so confused always. i never know what settings. because it’s all dark 😂it feels like another world! during the day i can instantly see if my setting isn’t working and i adjust it to my liking but with flash i feel like it’s so hard 😭
What if you are inside a white big tent lights colors all around for weddings how much power i use for the flash?
Question - what do you have your f stop number set to for bigger settings like this? And how do you get everyone's faces in focus without having to look through the view finder to know?
Great advice!
What Fuji-XT4 flash would you recommend for beginners? I have no knowledge about flashes and would love to know your input on where I should begin product wise
Great video made me smile whilst learning too.
Question though - on the dance floor are you shooting in continuous auto focus?
Thanks from the UK
I had the same question: do you mean you focus once then switch to manual and maintain your distance?
Nice. Just got an X-T3 and I’m slowly trying to get comfortable shooting with my Fuji at a wedding. I’m currently on the Sony system. Anyway...do you bounce flash/off camera flash at receptions at all? Also, is the X-T2 still a good enough camera to be a second body?

I really only switched away from it at the start of 2019. I had been using the X-T2 all the way up to that point.
What can you do about those white shirts/dresses sucking up all the flash light? Also, have you ever used a Lume Cube on a dance floor?
do youu think the new canon el-1 would be superior over the 600 Ex II
Great tips. Thank you. What shutter speed do you recommend? 1/250?
Thank you for this video! Do you have it set to autofocus or manual focus for dance floor scenes?
Glad you liked it! I hope to do more flash videos as well. Typically I'll leave my camera on autofocus single point. And have the point in the center of the frame and a fairly large square (not too big however). Since you can change the square size of the single point focus on the Fuji it's a huge help as well. Typically I don't get things that I wouldn't want.
Never mention shutter speed setting. Was the camera on aperture priority setting?
I shoot at 3.5 aperture and 1600 iso and I adjust accordingly on flash power using manual mode
That's a great setup!
Its 3am and I'm up studying your YTU videos😂
👏👏👏 GET LEARNT!!
So my shutter speed is around 1/160 and the flash power is at 1/32
@@jbivphotography would the low aperture focus everybody in the frame?
Good evening John, love your channel. its helped me no end with wedding photography. I have a few questions, firstly I'm a fuji xt-3 shooter, is your flash for on camera flash set to 1st curtain whilst using magmod mag sphere? secondly what zoom do you have your flash on while using this method (do you change it?) and lastly on white balance, I have your presets and was wondering when using any of the white balance modes do you leave the WB shift on R0 B0? if you don't that's fine I was just curious. Thanks
Great video thanks!!
Glad you liked it!
Great Tutorial
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you!
Very useful video ❤
Glad it was helpful!
So I have the fuji xt2 and the godex 860 flash.. I just bout it and have a party that doesn't have the best lighting in the room.. how should I approach setting up and rhe settings ?
Thanks for your video! Interested in your camera settings for dance receptions?
Hi John. Loving all your RUclips material. I didn't get what apeature you were using here. You said shoot wide I wasn't sure if that was in relation to the 14mm or the 2.8 or both?
I can't remember how I said it exactly, but I was wide open at 2.8. The only time I'll stop down is if I'm doing light painting at a reception.
Thanks John. As I said I love the material. Keep it up 👍🏻👍🏻
How are you able to see a live preview of how bright your photo will come out , I shoot with a xt3 and I manually have to bump my ISO to preview my framing to get the shot otherwise the screen just looks black cuz it’s lowlight , I barely got into flash so idk if it’s just a setting and I’ve been just using manual settings on the flash if that has anything to do with it
John, do you ever set up stands with constants lighting at various corners of the reception room? If so, what lights do you actually use? I'm looking for company names and models. Thanks, man!
What are your thoughts of TTL for the flash? In situations like this, would it be accurate most of the time?
TTL would work but honestly I don't trust it. It would be slow in this situation and also it would change up your photos so much that it would make editing a pain. Manual everything really helps most with post production as well because then you know waht your settings are going to look like and it's easier to edit.
What shutter speed would you have your camera set to, roughly?
Whats your shutter speed most of the time when you’re shooting the guests dancing?
Thanks for this. Do you still use the flash now? I need to get one for my canon if you have any up to date info
How come some flashes are able to sync at much higher shutter speeds?? I thought max 1/200th was normal for sync speed
this might sound really stupid but do you just go above everyone and take pictures on the dance floor? is there any pose you look for?
Generally I'm just looking for people having fun and great facial expressions.
Great video Good Sir!
Thank you so much
Do you have a link where I can learn more about how to use flash itself (setting, etc)? Thank you for this video!
Coming back again to see if you can help me out! TIA. :)
hey John,
What do you do when a couple or some random people want a picture of themselves while you have the wide+flash set up ?
I find the 23/16 too wide for it and I really dont want to carry another body with a flash
Thanks
Would this still work for my camera?
thank you thank you!! 💓💓
You’re welcome. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos.
For the open dance floor part of the evening, do you only shoot with on camera flash or do you have some ocf as well???
How was your experience with the shutter speed. Is 1/250 fast enough to collect all moving objects? I will use a yongnuo flash without hss and I think it will be only possible to use it until 1/250s
Typically your flash should be stopping your subjects. So I'm usually shooting at around 1/200 or 1/160th and I'm fine that way. Don't have a lot of blur on my photos at all. I'm using my flash in manual and the power is around 1/32 or 1/16
