Great Red Spot is Shrinking | COSMOS in a minute #28

  • Jupiter’s great red spot is shrinking. The Great Red Spot is a giant anticyclonic storm that has been raging for at least 350 years. The storm was once so enormous that it could swallow three Earth-sized planets. However, recent observations reveal it's now just big enough to accommodate a single Earth. Scientists are unsure why the Great Red Spot is shrinking. One possibility is that it is due to changes in Jupiter's atmosphere. Another possibility is that the storm is simply running out of energy or is being affected by neighbouring storms. A 2019 study showed that the storm is flaking on its edge, meaning that it could disappear within the next 20 years. Whatever the reason, the shrinking of the Great Red Spot is a reminder that even the most powerful storms in the solar system are not immune to change.

The most sensible theory I've heard is alluded to here, that surrounding powerful storms and colossal winds are simply siphoning energy from the great red spot very gradually - so that, by roughly another two to three centuries from now, it may just vanish altogether, having been slowly reabsorbed by what gave birth to it in the first place, Jupiter itself.

My theory is that Jupiter managed to swallow up one of its moons. And the forces involved have been basically continuing to basically digest the remnants of this moon. And the obstruction of this moon has caused the winds to basically form what looks like a storm around it. Think of it like throwing a ball of clay into a shallow river. The river would flow around this object creating vortices and increased water speed around the object. But since it is clay, the water will eventually win out over time and completely tear it apart.
