This was my Dad's all time favorite song. When I was a jerk teenager, I'd get embarrassed because we would go to weddings and he'd ask the DJ to play this song and then go out on the floor and dance his A&& off. Now, at 44, I miss my dad so damn much I put this song on just for him. Whenever I'm in public and it comes on, I dance my a## off wherever I am. Hindsight! RIP Dad.

I love this song, it's perfect for old folks like me! I bet there are already hip-hop fans much younger than me, listening back to the golden days of Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five -- and of course there are folks much older than me who fondly remember Elvis and Frank Sinatra. My hope is that everyone will listen to a bit of their parents' and grandparents' favorite music, just to get a better feel for who they are. There's so much awesome music to listen to!

One thing we should remember, a black man named George Jackson wrote this song after writing One Bad Apple that propelled the Osmond Brothers to the top of the charts. The Florence, Sheffield, Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, area have ALWAYS been a hot bed of top shelf song and music writers as well as musicians, singers, Producers, Engineers and still are! Race was never a factor there. They were there to kick ass and did to such a degree that Muscle Shoals, in the 70s was dubbed, The Hit Recording Capital of The World! Quite an honor for such a small blip on the map!
It's the reason why the Beatles raced the Rolling Stones to procure songs by a black singer/songwriter in Florence named Arthur Alexander. Both bands Loved Anna Come to Him. The Beatles won! Paul MCCartney was quoted as saying he wanted to BE Arthur Alexander. The Stones quickly scooped up Alexander's romantic You Better Move On which Jagger said, drove the young girls wild and took them to stardom. It was unending talent like this that led young men from Michigan like, Bob Seger, Glenn Frey and Robert Byrne, A couple of Texans named Don Henley, and Boz Scaggs, a young woman named Linda Ronstadt and a striking young woman known only as, Cher and a long-haired rebel from Nashville named Duane "Sky Dog" Allman and a broke, rowdy band from Florida with the strange name of Lynyrd Skynyrd " to the Shoals!
In the early 70s, Rod Stewart began to wonder what the hell was going on in that tiny speck on the map in northwest Alabama with those great black R&B and soul musicians that were all over the radio! He hopped a plane from London to the Sheffield in Alabama and and found out all those great, funky R&B, soul players were actually a bunch of young white kids who Rod said, "they looked like they should be working in the local grocery store." 😆 Rod named the first album, named the first album, appropriately enough, Atlantic Crossing which produced some of his most Famous songs! Famous Pond-jumpers from Europe to little Sheffield, Alabama included Steve Winwood and Traffic, Mighty Joe Cocker, Mark Knofler and Dire Straits and the Rolling Stones. Bob Dylan made several trips there and Phil Ramon brought a youngster from the cold northeast to Sheffield to begin his career. He had a familiar last name of Lennon. Julian sat on a pebble (which we call boulders) playing guitar and watching the beautiful sunset on the Tennessee River and writing wonderful songs.
It's stil amazes me how much world-wide musical history came out of this place. Was it the water? was it the mud? Was it the Indian spirits or was it the determined spirit of Tuscumbia native, Hellen Keller or just extremely gifted, ambitious, dogged individuals working across racial lines in Alabama as the rest of the country was going up in smoke? I vote it was the latter. It The magnitude of what these people accomplished didn't reall strike me until I read a review of The Stones' movie, Gimme Shelter. It was pointed out that the movie was centerd around California, New York and Muscle Shoals, Alabama. I was dumbfounded! I never knew anyone knew there was a Muscle Shoals outside of Muscle Shoals. When I finally saw the movie, there it was! Our little hideout being discussed along with the huge Cities and states by the highest of high powered promoters, agents, lawyers etc, like it was normal!
And then a familiar sight comes on screen. It's the O'Neal Bridge and then the Tones getting out of a car at the local Holiday INN, dressed like flashy street pimps on the TV Show, Baretta! And thes Keith with a coupon sticking out of his shirt pocket to Minnie Pearl's Fried Chicken. This was just before Keith locked himself in the tiny toilet at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios and wrote Wild Horses on the spot!
You know, I could go on and on with stories but the BEST advice is make the trip down here and visit the historic studios as hundred of thousands already have

Even in the 70s, people reminisced about the days of old. 😌😔
"Today's music ain't got the same soul." That's damn right.

Just take those old records off the shelf
I'll sit and listen to 'em by myself
Today's music ain't got the same soul
I like that old time rock 'n' roll
Don't try to take me to a disco
You'll never even get me out on the floor
In ten minutes I'll be late for the door
I like that old time rock 'n' roll
    Ooh
Still like that old time rock 'n' roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul ooh
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock 'n' roll
Won't go to hear them play a tango
I'd rather hear some blues or funky old soul
There's only one sure way to get me to go
Start playing old time rock 'n' roll
Call me a relic, call me what you will
Say I'm old-fashioned, say I'm over the hill
Today's music ain't got the same soul
I like that old time rock 'n' roll
Still like that old time rock 'n' roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock 'n' roll
Still like that old time rock and roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock 'n' roll
With that old time rock 'n' roll
With that old time rock 'n' roll
Still like that old time rock 'n' roll

Not every song from the 60s and 70s is amazing. The reason we think it is, and the reason we rate those eras so highly is because we only remember the good tracks and albums.
With today’s music, we remember a lot more of the music that comes out, so we don’t build up a collection of iconic music as easily as you could when the Beatles or The Rolling Stones were performing. But I’m sure, if you put the average musical releases of, for example, 1965, up against 2021, you would see that the quality of song isn’t that different, you just hear more modern music in large quantities, so you fail to find the great quality ones
If you want some good modern music, Hypersonic Missiles by Sam Fender, Never Enough and New House by Rex Orange County and a lot of Two Door Cinema club songs are fantastic showings of what modern musicians can do.
Please don’t dismiss today’s music so easily. “Guess you guys might not be ready for that yet, but your kids are gonna love it”

@@baronbrrrrett it’s true. If you showed people in the 30s some Beatles, they’d hate it. If you showed some people in the 60s some NWA, they’d hate it. People’s taste in music changes with the time. That’s why, in 20 years time, people will look back on music in the 2010s and 2020s and love it so much
