You have a lovely voice. I first heard the Clancy Brothers version of this, which is the "proper" one to my ears... I used to play it to put myself to sleep in college. Today, I sing it to my young kids as a lullabye, but not nearly as well as you do.
Fingerings for chords: most of them are normal, but the "tricky" ones are... G is "full" G 3-2-0-0-3-3 C is C2: x-3-2-0-3-3 G/B: x-2-0-0-0-3 happy playing
This song was written by Harold Boulton, to an existing tune called My Wife is Sick (No. 509 in The Complete Collection of Irish Music, Stanford-Petrie, 1903-5). He went on to write the 'Skye Boat Song' and was duly Knighted for his efforts.
very nice sheena . . . . yes johnny. boulton was a british businessman. i have posted a cover of this song too, w keyboard. i have been singing it for 45+ yr, and, incrediby, on one or two occasions, i have put babies to sleep with it
He didn't write it. He may, as many did, have adapted a traditional song, added lyrics and arranged it but it was in existance long berfore Harold Boulton. It dates back to at least the late 1600's... it's Baroque nature apparent.. It is a folk song.

Definitely trad, though The Flying Column may have popularised it. Dates to 17th cent, though English lyrics are much later.
